We are excited to have you here today and can't wait to see your robotic creations, project work and team spirit! We offer our congratulations to all those participating in today s tournament. You should be very proud of everything you have learned and accomplished this year. We remind you to think of today less as a competition and more as a celebration of the hard work your team has put forth over the last several months. 4 CARDINAL NEWMAN SECONDARY SCHOOL FIRST Lego League is a robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds which is designed to get children excited about science and technology and teach them valuable employment and life skills. FLL can be used in a classroom setting but is not solely designed for this purpose. Teams, composed of up to ten children with at least one adult coach, can also be associated with a pre-existing club or organization, homeschooled, or just be a group of friends who wish to do something awesome. In FLL, the children do the work! And the work is programming an autonomous robot (using the LEGO MINDSTORMS robot set) to score points on a thematic playing surface, creating an innovative solution to a problem as part of the their project, all while being guided by the FLL Core Values. These three elements The Robot Game, the Project, and FLL Core Values make up what we call our yearly Challenge. Like any other organized sport. Teams also fundraise, create a team identity, and go on field trips. The goal of FIRST is to inspire the next generation of technology leaders. 5 2016 ANIMAL ALLIES SM Challenge Get ready. Get set. ROAR! Or you could bark, quack or squeak because the 2016 ANIMAL ALLIES SM season is all about our furry, feathered, and finned friends. In the 2016 FIRST LEGO League Challenge, students will look into the eyes of our ANIMAL ALLIES SM. What might become possible when we learn to help each other? For ANIMAL ALLIES SM, think of people and animals as allies in the quest to make life better for everyone. Sometimes people help animals and sometimes animals help people. Your Project mission this season is to make our interactions with animals better hopefully better for all of us. Core Values: Imagine a world where future technology and science leaders know how to collaborate and share within their own teams and with others. It is the only way we can solve the big problems in the future. That is what core values are about. Each team is evaluated on these core values. We are a team We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors. We know our coaches and mentors don t have all the answers; we learn together. We honor the spirit of friendly competition. What we discover is more important than what we win. We share our experiences with others. We display Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition in everything we do. We have FUN! Project: Each team will: Identify a problem when people and animals interact Design a solution that makes the interaction better for animals, people or both Share your problem and solution with others Visit the team pits and ask them about their projects. Robot: Each team will design, build and program a robot that will complete missions with themes all related to animals. The team has 2½ minutes to get points for completing missions. Champion s Award: This award recognizes a team that embodies the FIRST LEGO League experience, by fully embracing our Core Values while achieving excellence and innovation in both the Robot Game and Project. Project Award: This award is given to a team whose quality research, innovative solutions, community sharing and presentation best reflect an in-depth understanding of the scientific disciplines involved with the Project. In order to be eligible to win this award, each team was required to identify a problem with the way we interact with animals, create an innovative solution to that problem, and share their solution with others. Robot Performance Award: This award recognizes the team that scores the most points during the Robot Game. Teams have a chance to compete in at least three, 2-1/2 minute matches and their highest score counts. Robot Design Award: Judges look for teams whose design work stands out. Judges evaluate mechanical design, innovation, programming effectiveness and team strategies for solving missions to assess overall design quality. Core Values Award: This award is presented to the team that best demonstrates extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, inspiration, exceptional partnership, and the utmost respect to its own teammates and in its support and encouragement of fellow teams. Rookies Rising Star Award: This award is presented to the rookie team that best demonstrates the overall achievement in all areas of the FIRST LEGO League programs.
