1 Dear Riverside School Students and Parents, Through the support of Mr. Weiss, the Riverside School PTA and the Arts Field Day Committee, we are very excited to announce the 14 th Annual Arts Field Day for grades 3 through 5 on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 8 th, 2016 from 1-3pm. *Please try to avoid pulling your child out for doctor appointments at this time if you would like them to participate. The Riverside School Arts Field Day is an opportunity for your children to experiment with different art forms and learn from professional artists. They can enroll in workshops to learn more about painting, leather tooling, clay work, dance and much more! Here is how it works: The selection process will be online this year and the students will select their courses during classroom time right after Memorial Day weekend (and before Jun 1). If you would like to review and discuss options with your child/children beforehand, please see the following pages for detailed course descriptions offered this year on June 8th. ALSO, We need volunteers in many of the courses, so please reach out to Paige Shockley or Julie Lowe if you would like to help that afternoon, or if you have any questions. 2 NOTE : The Students will be asked to choose either- TWO 55 minute sessions or ONE 2 hour session. 2 HOUR WORKSHOPS A1 ipad Photography with Mr. Ronk Students will learn how to make graphic design and art on the ipad, using pictures taken by the students. Join our very own Mr. Ronk for this fun class. You will impress your family and friends with your new skills! A2 Chinese Brush Painting with Michele Mozian In this class, students will get a glimpse into the ancient art of Chinese Brush Painting. While experimenting with the unique painting supplies, they will paint a Cherry Blossom scroll and a landscape. A3 We re SEW Happy! Have fun sewing your own stuffed emoji minis or monster pillows. The team from Sew Happy is bringing this workshop alive with some monster-sized fun! A4 Creative Thinking through Improv Comedy Do you enjoy making people laugh? Have fun with Joe Mozian developing your comedic genius by participating in a variety of games and activities, including: improve comedy, role-play, creative writing, idea generation and more. Activities in this workshop incorporate the same exercises that humor writer, comedians and performers use to enhance their ability to generate ideas for television, books and advertising campaigns.

3 A5 Face Time: Clay Mask Making Workshop Discover your many faces as you create clay masks from around the globe. Learn about ancestor masks, animal masks and masks for the theater. Create two clay masks of your own with the help of Clay Art center teaching artists. A6 Watercolor Technique and Painting Choose a favorite animal and learn dry brush, wet into wet, brush types, masking, color mixing, washes all these techniques and processes will go into your final painting! Plenty of practice time to learn about these watercolor tricks so you can create your own matted finished piece. Presented by The Art Spot. A7 Wearable Art Join us in creating and learning about wearable art! In this class explore new and recycled materials to design and create art as clothing, accessories and jewelry. Come experience fashion as art! Taught by Riverside art teachers, Ms. Deitrick and Ms. Corso. A8 Polymer Clay Sculpture with an Asian Twist Using polymer clay and sculpture tools, you will design and create miniature food, presented on a bamboo mat, in the style of Japanese miniature food called Gyoden! This fun workshop, full of sculpting tricks and techniques, as well as the history and background of Gyoden, is presented by The Art Spot. A9 Repoussé Repoussé is an ancient form of metal tooling also used to create sculpture in the round, like the Statue of Liberty! The method creates a relief design on a flat surface of metal. You will use tools to hammer and shape your designs, using different textural patterns learned in class. Your finished piece will be matted for hanging in this workshop with The Art Spot.

4 A10 Introduction to Leather Tooling ** OPEN ONLY TO 4 th and 5 th GRADERS** This exciting hands-on workshop is offered to 4th and 5th graders who will learn and practice the basic process for tooling. Discussion will center on the safe use of tools, different kinds of leather, the tanning process, history of tooling, all the while using punches, swivel knives, mallets and more to create interesting and well composed patterns in leather. This workshop is being offered by The Art Spot. 55 MINUTE WORKSHOPS B1 Cupcake Fun! ** OPEN ONLY TO 5 th GRADERS** Have fun learning how to decorate your cupcakes like a pro! Each student will decorate 4-6 cupcakes. First we will learn to decorate some as a class, and then you will be ready to decorate some on your own. Your instructor is Elizabeth Butler, Riverside parent and talented food artist. **Course is NOT suitable for students with food allergies. B2 Origami Learn the ancient art of Japanese paper folding from Riverside School s Japanese mothers. Using only geometric fold and crease patterns, students will create toys and 3D shapes. 5 B3 Hip Hop Dance with Brian Herman This class is all about personal style, expression and having fun! Join Brian in learning a simple hip hop routine suitable for both boys and girls. Brian has shared the stage and collaborated with prominent international artists such as Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Sean Kingston, Sean Paul, Lil Wayne, Swizz Beatz, as well as countless others. Throughout his success as a performer, Brian has maintained his focus to inspire younger generations by providing dance instruction through his dance studio, Double Up Dance, which he shares with his brother, Paul. B4 Kempo Karate In a fun, safe environment, students will begin with warm ups and stretches, then learn a series of punches, kicks and blocks in the air. Students will then explore how to combine these punches, kicks and blocks and shift to physically active and characterbased games, highlighting the core lessons of the martial arts. Participants will have no physical contact during the sessions. *Students should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. B5 Adventures in Bento Making Bento Boxes have been traditionally used in Japan. They are a compact, balanced, visually appealing meal in a box. Come and enjoy the art of making a Bento Box with Ms. Tepper. Students will take home their own Bento Box packed with fun and filled with little treats. *Please note if you have food allergies when registering for this course. See final page next

6 B6 Robotics Design with Legos Students will use gears, pulleys, belts and much more to design and create everyday machines. Students will work independently or in small groups to identify a problem and use Lego bricks to create a simple or powered machine that will solve the identified problem. With each project, students will investigate, test, and draw conclusions. This workshop is led by Bricks and Motors. B7 Awesome Art & Painting with Felicity Have fun and create an awesome painting on canvas with local Old Greenwich artist and resident, Felicity Kostakis. We will focus on developing artistic skills and learning painting techniques. Students will be able to explore, create and achieve a beautiful masterpiece all while having fun!
