2 FALL 2002 ART CLASSES 't WORKSHOPS SEPTEHEER 23 - DECEHEER 1 The Tarble Arts Center offers year-round community art instruction for persons of all ages. A well-equipped classroom, highly qualified instructors, and small class sizes ensure the quality of our class and workshop offerings. For more information about these or other Tarble classes and workshops, please phone (217) 581ARTS (2787). CLASSES FOR CHfLDREN The Wonder of Autumn Colors (ages 4-5) Instructor: Terry Hyder Mondays, 4:00-5:00 pm, September 23-0ctober 21 Fee: $12.00 for members, $15.00 for non-members Focusing on the autumn season, this class for pre-schoolers explores art and nature through variety of art media and approaches. Each lesson incorporates the use of different materials as young children learn about the art elements of color and shape through fun, hands-on projects. Registration deadline: September 21 Explorations in Art (ages 6-8) Wednesdays, 3:45-5:00pm, September 25-0ctober 30 Fee: $18.00 for members, $22.00 for non-members This class for elementary school children introduces students to an assortment of art media and approaches. Many projects incorporate art history and multicultural aesthetics through hands-on experiences. Lessons include abstract paintings, clay sculptures, paper mosaics, and relief prints. Registration deadline: September 22 Painting in the Style of... (ages 9-14) Mondays, 4-5:30pm, October 28-December 9 (Note: there will be no class meeting on November 25) Fee: $30.00 for members, $36.00 for non-members Designed for middle school aged students, this class will combine art history with hands-on painting sessions. Participants will be introduced to three movements in twentieth century art: Fauvism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. Young artists will be encouraged to explore a variety of subject matter while painting in the style of masters of contemporary painting. Registration deadline: October 26
3 ClA55 5 FOR CHfLDREN r::t ADLIL15 Bead Weaving (ages 9 and over) Instructor: Dorothy Bennett Saturday, October 19, 10:00am-4:30pm (includes lunch) Fee: $36.00 for members, $44.00 for non-members This all-day workshop will show participants how to create colorful, fantastic woven bead articles which may be used for bookmarks, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and more. Using seed beads and a loom, a variety of basic techniques in this medium will be explored. By the end of the day, participants will have a unique item of woven beads. A variety of colors of seed beads and the use of bead looms and other necessary tools are included in the class fee. Registration deadline: October 16 Carnival Masks (ages 9 and over) Instructor: Dorothy Bennett Tuesdays, November 5 & 12, 6:30-8:30pm Fee: $24.00 for members, $30.00 for non-members Inspired by Caribbean festival masks featured in the Tarble exhibition Celebrate, this two session workshop will teach participants how to use papier mache to construct a fanciful creature mask. The first session focuses on constructing the papier mache form; in session two, students will paint the mask and add other embellishments as desired. Registration deadline: November 3 Day of the Dead String Puppets (ages 10 and over) Saturday, November 2, 10:00am-noon Fee: $8.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members Offered in observance of the Mexican Day of the Dead, this short workshop focuses on this unique holiday that celebrates and honors the lives of family and friends who are no longer with us. After a discussion of the origins and some of the customs surrounding el Dia de los Muertos, participants will design, construct, and decorate a calavera (skeleton) string puppet. Registration deadline: October 31 ClA55 5 FOR ADLIL15 (AG 51S AND OVER) Introduction to Metals Instructor: Victoria Woollen-Danner Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30pm, October 1-15 Fee: $60.00 for members, $72.00 for non-members Focusing on the use of non-specialized tools and "cold connections" (no heat required), participants will create a metal brooch or pendant during this workshop. Using copter, brass, and the limited use of found objects and enameling, students wil learn how to cut out shapes, join pieces with riveting, wire, ~nd jump rings, and add texture through embossing, stamping, and hammermg. Registration deadline: September 28
4 Quilted Wall Hangings Instructor: Kathryn Stewart Thursday, October 17, 6:30-7:30pm; Thursdays, 6:30-8:30pm, October 24November 14 Fee: $36.00 for members, $45.00 for non-members This quilting class will focus on the creation of a simple 9-patch quilted wall hanging bordered with one or more borders and is an excellent project for learning the most basic piecing by machine. Appliqued embellishments, using fusible webbing, may be added. By selecting fabrics with specific prints or colors, participants may choose a particular theme or holiday as their subject. The first meeting date will cover fabric selection, tools, and equipment required. While no prior quilting experience is required, access to a sewing machine and basic sewing skills are recommended for this class. Registration deadline: October 15 Glass Bead Making (ages 15 and over) Instructor: Dave Hunter Friday, November 8, 6:00-9:00pm; Saturday, November 9, 9:00am-4:00pm (includes lunch) Fee: $60.00 for members, $72.00 for non-members This intensive weekend workshop will teach beginners all they need to know to create glass beads using Mapp gas and a "hothead" torch. For those with some experience, different techniques will explored. Topics to be covered include glass physics, the history and types of glass, proper handling and use of equipment, surface decoration, shaping the glass, and making a bead within a bead. Registration deadline: November 6 Teachers please note: Tarble Arts Center classes may be taken for Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Contact the office at for more information. Cancellation Policy: The Tarble Arts Center has the option of canceling a class or workshop if there are less than the minimum number of students required. Refund Policy: If the Tarble Arts Center cancels a class due to insufficient enrollment, the class fee will be refunded. A student withdrawing from a class after enrolling must notify the Tarble Arts Center on or before the registration deadline to receive a full class refund. Because classes are funded on a break-even basis, no refunds will be made for withdrawals after the start of any class. The Tarble Arts Center, a division of the College of Arts & Humanities, is partially supported by Tarble Arts Center membership contributions and by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
