1 Cedar Key Arts Center Newsletter Fall, Second Street, P.O. Box 949 Cedar Key, Florida visit us us Message from the President Summer is over and we are looking for a great new year at CKAC. We are working on finishing up installing the new windows and doors for the Keyhole and we now have a new kitchen in the Arts Center. Cannot wait for everyone to see the new design and all the new storage. Thanks to all of you who helped us get ready for Hurricane Irma and we are grateful that we did not have any damage to the Arts Center or Cedar Keyhole. We have many exciting workshops and gallery openings planned. We are looking forward to the OFCA Festival in March. We are need volunteers and a coordinator for the Children's Benefit Dinner so if you would like to help with the silent auction, decorating or selling tickets please let me know. See everyone in November for our first gallery opening. Susan Rosenthal, President Dates to Remember Oct. 21 & 22-Children s Art in the Park at Seafood Festival-contact Patty Jett to volunteer November 18-First Gallery Opening of the Season- Veteran Artists Thursday, January 25th, 5:30 p.m. Children s Art Program Benefit Dinner, Auction, & Raffle March 24 & 25- Old Florida Celebration of the Arts Check the workshop and gallery schedules for many creative opportunities this season. Summer Art Program for Children and Teens- July 10-21, 2017 The theme for this year's Summer Art Program for the elementary students was "Exploration in Art." Even though each project had a theme, the 21 students were given a choice of mediums and free reign of their creativity. Collage robots, foil embossing, sunflower painting, straw weaving and sculpture were some of the themes. Guided by Jessie Rothbard s instructions and gentle leadership, the students enjoyed the process of creating. Amber Ryan, as the paid assistant, helped keep the students and materials organized. The eleven registered teens in the Teen Art Program also explored different media. Bunny Hand spent two days facilitating printing on fabric and then sewing the fabric into useful pieces of art. For two days Amy Gernhardt guided the students in making a hand built clay project with cut outs and surface decorations. Virginia Stevenson took two days to teach the teens how to paint silk using wax and dyes. Dave Treharne directed the adolescents in how to use color theory and design to create an artistic mosaic tile. Jessie Rothbard taught embossing with foil. Twenty volunteers (ten community members, one board member, one grandparent, six parents, one middle school student and one high school student) helped to make the program a success Both programs ended with an exhibit of student work on July 21 from 10 11:30. Parents and volunteers provided a wonderful variety of delicious snacks as well as drinks for the attendees. It was rewarding to see the students proudly show their work to family and friends. Thank you to everyone who supported this program by volunteering, attending the exhibit, donating money for scholarships, buying tickets for the Children's Art Benefit Dinner and/or donating items for the Silent Auction and Raffle at the Children's Art Benefit Dinner. We could not do it without your generosity. Children s Art Program Benefit Dinner, Silent Auction and Raffle-Thursday, January 25, 2018 Plans are already underway for this outstanding event which supports not only the Children and Teen s summer art programs, but also Art Club for CK students during the school year, free painting for kids in the park during Festivals, etc. All money raised at this event goes to fund Children s Art in Cedar Key. You can help by volunteering to serve on one of the committees (decorating, raffle, auction, ticket sales, set up/clean up), donating an artsy type item for the raffle (value under $35) or an art piece for the silent auction, (value $50 & up), or by buying tickets and attending the event. Peter Stefani will again be providing a yummy dinner for us. Tickets will be on sale later in the fall at the Keyhole and
