2 BUTLER NORTH - Youngstown: Butler North (formerly known as the First Christian Church) houses the Dennison Education Center, the new home of the Butler s education department. Butler North is located next to the Butler Institute on the corner of Wick Avenue and University Plaza. Thanks to the generosity of the Dennison family, this beautiful facility is the site for Butler classes, lectures, concerts and private events. INCREASE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ART HISTORY Join Butler docents in the Zona auditorium for a Continuing Education program that focuses upon art history. Lectures as well as video from the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. will cover American and European painting, as well as a variety of other art forms. This series is held on Tuesdays at noon. Contact Richard Adler 330/ , ext. 117 for program information. PLEASE NOTE Class size is limited. Classes are filled on a first come first served basis. Sessions that do not fill will be cancelled or combined. No written confirmation will be mailed. If you do not hear from us, your enrollment is ensured. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships based on need are available on a limited basis for children s classes at our Youngstown and Trumbull Butler locations. Please direct written requests to the Butler Education Department in Youngstown and include a recommendation from the student s art teacher. PARKING In Youngstown, limited free parking is available in the Butler s private lot located on the museum s north side. Additional parking is available at a nominal cost in nearby YSU lots. In Howland, ample free parking is provided on the Butler Trumbull museum s property. JUST DRAWING Join as we explore a variety of media while learning the basics of drawing from nature and engaging your imagination. Weather permitting, we will draw outside on the museum grounds as well as in the classroom and museum galleries. Pinch, coil, and slab techniques will be utilized. Students will think outside of the box while turning your slab box into an animal, creature, or other creation. Bring paint clothes or dress children/toddlers appropriately. Keep in mind most paints will not come out in the wash. CLAY TIME CAPSULES Learn or improve your craftsmanship in the art of hand-building with clay while creating a personal time capsule. Pinch, coil, and slab techniques will be utilized. Students will choose a combination of techniques to build a time capsule to hold special personal notes and mementos that can be set aside for years to come and opened at a future date. Have fun with us as we explore the ocean and its inhabitants! Several different sea-faring projects will be created with a variety of materials. PAPER BATIK WORKSHOP Paper batik is based on a wax resist process used to add color and design to paper or cloth. In our paper batik, students will use chalk, tempera paint and India ink to create a beautiful design in a very unusual way similar to waxed batik. Wednesday-June 22 Room A Fee: $15 #013-Grades 5-8 1:30-3:30 p.m. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA! Get ready to celebrate America s birthday in this fun class. Learn about some of the different states while exploring different media together. Lisa Zitello, art instructor Saturday-July 2 Fee: $10 #014-Preschool/K (ages 3-6) with adult partner 10:00-11:00 a.m. PAINTING AND PRINTMAKING COMBINED In this mixed media class, we will combine two favorite ways of making art with several different methods. We will discuss artists Gustav Klimt and George Rodrigue and their imagery. Wednesday-August 3 Room A Fee: $15 #017-Grades 4-8 4:30-6:00 p.m. EXPLORING OUTER SPACE! Use your imagination and blast off to outer space with us while experimenting with a variety of media. Lisa Zitello, art instructor Saturday-August 27 Room A Fee: $10 #018-Preschool/K (ages 3-6) with adult partner 10:00-11:00 a.m. TEEN/ADULT CLASSES - YOUNGSTOWN-BUTLER NORTH BRINGING REALITY TO CANVAS (ALL LEVELS) This painting class will provide students of all skill levels time to work at their own pace while creating an oil painting from a photographic source. This class may be repeated. Students are asked to bring a 5 x 7 photo for use on an 11 x 14 pre-stretched canvas. (Ambitious students may try larger surfaces-i.e. 8 x 10 photo with a 16 x 20 canvas but must provide their own canvas.) Although reference photos that you have taken are preferred, it is a good idea to have several different photos with you at the start. In some cases you may like a different sky, or trees or just want to combine several to make an image more unique or personal. In many cases, choosing a photo with larger shapes and good contrast from light to dark may be easier to translate. All supplies for painting in oils will be provided. Students wishing to work in acrylics may bring their own paints and instruction will be provided as well. Supply fee is waived if students have their own supplies. Previous students can use time in class to complete any earlier oil paintings and begin a new work. BASIC PASTEL Learn to paint with pastel. This class provides students the opportunity to learn the basics of applying pastels which includes matching vales and colors that translate to realistic shadows, textures, and images from photos to paper. Students will need to bring a photo to work from as well as pastel supplies (supply list available at the Butler by calling , ext. 221). If the opportunity arises, we may try to work outside as well. This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. Sean Butler, art instructor Tuesdays-4 weeks-june 7, 14, 21, 28 Fee: $45 #A03-Ages 14 & up 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. COLORED PENCIL DRAWING This class will provide students a variety of techniques needed in using colored pencils to draw and color subjects of their choice. Explore light sources, shading, and blending to produce finished artworks. This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) Tuesdays-5 weeks-june 7, 14, 21, 28, July 5 #A04-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. COLORED PENCIL AND WATERCOLOR COMBINED Explore the world of mixed media art combining basic skills of watercolor painting enhanced with the detail of colored pencils. Students will learn lighting, shading, layering and perspective to produce beautiful full color works of their favorite subject matter. Please bring several different full color reference pictures (5 x 7 ). This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) Wednesdays-5 weeks-june 8, 15, 22, 29, July 6 #A05-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. BASIC PENCIL DRAWING I Explore subject matter, contouring, shade, layout, basic perspective, and light source. Students will learn different techniques of recognizing shape and form to transition to their drawing as well as tools to help them learn basic drawing skills. Students should bring a reference of their favorite subject to draw. (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) Mondays-5 weeks-june 13, 20, 27, July 11, 18 (no July 4) #A06-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. MIXED MEDIA 3-D WALL ART Explore your creative side using everyday items that surround us in nature, our homes, and everyday lives. This class is designed to use your imagination and to learn from one another. Open to all skill levels, you will create your own three-dimensional wall art incorporating wood, canvas, elements of nature, and a variety of fine art supplies. The instructor will be demonstrating and assisting each student as well as helping in the final assembly of your piece. Anything goes in this class, so bring your imagination with you! Bring along a few references to paint, making sure they are clear so detail can be seen. Instructor will be available for suggestions and assistance. For beginners, please make sure references are not complicated. Students may bring their own supplies or purchase paint (oils only) and supplies from instructor. (All students should bring an 11 x 14 stretched canvas.) Feel free to bring in old clothing-the more variety the better: silks, linens, cottons, etc. (Suggestion: bring in old ties o sentimental garments to create a piece of art to be reminded of your loved ones every time you look at your new creation.) This class will be very open-ended and fun. Please bring paint brushes and your favorite music. All other supplies will be provided to create your very own masterpiece that will be stretched onto a wood frame with help of the instructor. Mondays-5 weeks-july 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22 #A10-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. PET PORTRAITS Students will learn to render a portrait of their favorite pet in any media of their choosing while exploring proportions, light source, and shading. In the second class, we will paint the flower or work from another reference using any medium of choice (knowledge of that medium). Students should bring sketch pad, variety of drawing pencils, white and kneaded eraser, and flower references first day of class. Bring your choice of medium for the second class as well as 11 x 14 stretched canvas, board, or other. Oils and other materials may be purchased from instructor for $6.
