We all see the world around us, but do we really look, take in the forms, shapes and structures as an artist does? Just relying on our memory alone does not suffice. Light, shadow and details are hard enough to replicate when they re right there in front of you. If you have to invent them or try to go from memory, they appear even less convincing. Learn the difference between observational realism and intellectual realism by drawing what you see not what you think you see. NEW! INTRO CLASSES FOR YOUNG ADULTS! 2-D Art Sampler JAN 21 FEB 25 MON / 6 9 PM Join us for a six-week sampler class that will help young adults build portfolios with various explorations of 2D media. Projectbased lessons will include working in pencil, charcoal and conte, pastel and paint. Themes covered will include still-life, portrait and gestural studies. ALYSE TOWNSEND / Course / Manga & Comic Book Creation JAN 26 MAR 2 SAT / 1 4 PM Manga and Comic Book Creation focuses on traditional and digital comic book illustration and scripting, providing community opportunities for young comic artists. ALEXANDRIA FRANCISCO / Course / We will work only in graphite during this five-day workshop. Some of the topics include: contour drawing, full-value rendering, negative/positive space, sight measuring (sighting) and the often misunderstood grid system. Traditionally, observation drawing is from life and this will be emphasized but in today s world, photo references play a very important role as long as you take your own photos. We will cover how to do this successfully and bring life into a drawing when working from a photograph. Every lesson in this class will be augmented by demos from Armin, along with PowerPoint presentations and handouts. This class is for novice and intermediate drawers; may be too intense for pure beginners. 3 Spring Potter s Wheel: Fundamental Shapes MAY 2 JUN 6 CERAMICS Beginning Ceramics JAN 21 APR 15 MON / 6 9 PM This instructor will introduce students to the three main techniques of hand building: pinch, pot, coil and slab. Using a project based approach, students will explore these three techniques using textures and tools available to them in the studio. Experienced hand-builders are welcome and will also be challenged to extend their skills through these projects and supported as they work on their own projects. PAM HART / Course / or Studio Ceramics JAN 24 APR 18 THU / 9:30 AM 12:30 PM Whether you prefer hand building or throwing on the wheel, students with prior clay experience and comfort working independently will explore ways to improve techniques and creativity. Studio Glaze Practices JAN 24 APR 18 Enjoy better glaze results on your pottery by learning how to properly prepare, test and apply glazes. Whether you re getting the desired results with your glazes or not, this class will cover many aspects of glazing that will improve your work. Students will also be able to produce pottery. TIM RICKETTS / Course / Spring Interim Ceramics MAY 2 JUN 6 THU / 9:30 AM 12:30 PM This is an interim class for intermediate and advanced students who can work independently to bridge the gap between winter ceramics and the summer. Students can take this class and work on their own projects with tutelage from the instructor. The studio will be available for working independently outside of class time. Clay must be purchased from instructor. PAM HART / Course / Once a student learns to make cylinders, bowls, plates, etc., anything becomes possible. Different tools will be demonstrated that will help in the forming of these shapes. A great review for advanced students while introducing new challenges to lessskilled throwers. TIM RICKETS / Course / PAINTING Beginning Acrylic Painting WED / 6 9 PM In this class you will learn color theory, the elements and principles of art, composition and the techniques used in building your painting, such as under-painting, glazing and scumbling. We will also discuss the many mediums available to change the effects of acrylic paint. Subject matter will be still life and painting from photographs. SYLVIA COON / Course / Intermediate Acrylic Painting WED / 1:30 4:30 PM Build on your basic knowledge of painting with acrylics by delving deeper into self-expression, motivation and exploration of the medium. Jewelry Fabrication JAN 22 APR 16 TUE / 6 9 PM Become proficient at use of the tools, techniques of jewelers as well as materials such as gold or silver and the essential gemological information of gemstones for proper care in the process of creating your work of wearable art. All raw materials must be purchased by the student at an extra cost. ROGER SCHMIDT / Course / Jewelry Lost Wax Casting WED / 6 9 PM Take your designs from paper to finished jewelry through the process of lost wax casting. Beginning students will execute a guided project; intermediate and advanced students will work on their own designs. Wax working, casting and finishing techniques will be demonstrated. ONE-DAY WORKSHOP Pearl Stringing Workshop FEB 21 $70 / $55 Museum members Learn the fundamentals of restringing an individually knotted strand of cultured pearls or beads on silk thread. Please bring your own 18 to 22 strand, with clasp, to be restrung. Silk thread, snips, tweezers and bead board will be provided for class. ONE-DAY WORKSHOP Wood Burning Workshop JAN 12 SAT / 10 AM 1 PM $40 / $25 Museum members Learn how to create drawings with a wood burning tool on wood. This workshop concentrates building on your own drawing skills to create line drawings and value drawings. You will use the different points found in your wood burning set for shading, fine lines and thicker lines; and will include instruction on different ways to transfer your photos to your wood projects. Bring your wood blank to design. Students will need to bring a wood burner (with at least three points,) sand paper, wood blank to draw/burn on (flat surface or a box.) Build your own drawing skills to create line drawings and value drawings using the different points found in your wood burning set. Exploring Art History JAN 21 APR 15 MON / 6 9 PM Explore art styles and periods, beginning with prehistoric cave paintings and drawings, through discussion and hands-on experiences. The class will cover such periods and styles such as Impressionism, Surrealism and Cubism. Create your own period art pieces from each discussion using your preferred medium.
