2 Welcome to the studios of the La Grange Art League. We are a 501(c)3 organization and welcome all levels and ages in a variety of mediums. Classes held in the Upstairs Studio are on the 2nd Floor and accessible by stairs only. Classes held in the First Floor studio are on the ground level. Registration and Teacher Bios are available on our website. Classes and workshops are intended for adults (ages 18+) unless otherwise noted. Permission must be obtained for younger students from the instructor. See the end of the book for workshops and special classes. M Members NM Non Members MONDAY M #01 FUNdamentals of Acrylics Instructor: Mark Tobin Dates: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26 Time: 10am - 12:30pm, upstairs studio Paint your own personal masterpiece using the basic fundamentals of painting, including composition, value, color, lights, and shadows. Painting made easy using these guidelines while developing your own style. See website for supply list. #02 Watercolor Workshop Instructor: Marie Murrell Dates: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26 Time: 6-8:30pm, first floor studio The objective of the workshop course is for intermediate and advanced painters to focus on the intention of the painting, how to tell the visual story and to have fun. Along the way, the basics of technique, composition, color, value and other elements of design will be reviewed. Classes will include demonstrations, with emphasis on the figure and portrait. Students are welcome to paint subjects of their choice. See website for supply list. #03 Monday Night Oil Painting Instructor: James Swanson Dates: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26 Time: 7-9:30pm, upstairs studio Oil painting 101 is a beginning to advanced oil painting class taught by OPA Signature member James Swanson. In this indepth oil painting class James will give out all the oil painting knowedge he has and more. Expect to be overwhelmed with terms and concepts about painting at first but by the end of the session it will start to sink in. You will learn about composition, color mixing, drawing, brushes, canvas, paint thickness, brush stroke meaning, and so much more. James classes are lighthearted fun and fill up fast. TUESDAY #04 Oil Painting Studio T Instructor: Iliyan Petkov Dates: 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 3/6 Time: 10am - 12:30p, upstairs studio Everyone with a love for painting and a need to learn creative techniques that can bring the painting to life is welcome. We will cover the basics, including brush types and color mixing. We will discuss composition and perspective, controlling color, and a variety of brush strokes for different effects. Various subject matters will be explored during the class with the goal of a finished painting each week. See website for supply list.
3 TUESDAY T #05 Drawing with Charcoal, Pencil, Ink, Soft Pastel Instructor: Iliyan Petkov Dates: 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27 Time: 1-3:30 pm, first floor studio Drawing with charcoal, pencil, ink, and soft pastel for all levels. This class will cover a variety of subjects, from still life, landscape, and cityscape to abstract, as well as different creative techniques. You will learn perspective and composition, and how to develop shapes and values into a finished piece. Students can use photographs supplied by the instructor or bring their own. If students would like to paint a still life, they will have the option to do so from life or from a photo. See website for supply list. #06 Creating Abstract Art Using the Pour Method Limit 7 Students Instructor: Stephanie Bieniek Dates: 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13 Time: 1-3:30 pm, upstairs Studio In this fun, imaginative class, students will learn how to create abstract works by utilizing the pour method using fluid acrylics. Also, the instructor will show different ways to use this medium. Please wear old clothing as this is a very messy technique. A $10 fee is required at the first class for supplied materials. Fee: $102M $114NM 6 Weeks #07 Art Club Ages 7-9 years Instructor: Marlo Steinke Dates: 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/20, 2/27, 3/6* Time: 4-5:30pm, first floor studio Love to draw? Join the Club! Unwind after a hard day at school and explore your creative side! Learn to draw people, animals, landscapes, flowers always fun and unique projects! We use different mediums and learn techniques that create cool effects! If You like being creative and artistic, you don t want to miss The Art Club! Fee: $130NM 8 Weeks #08 Using Inks with Color Ages 14+ Instructor: Samantha DeCarlo Dates: 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27 Time: 7-9:30pm, first floor studio This class introduces ink pen to the beginner artist. Students will learn how to use ballpoint, India ink, and markers. Students will then test various colors to experiment with value and shading. Each lesson will emphasize drawing a finished piece. See website for supply list. #09 Encaustic Mixed Media Limit 7 Students Instructor: Sarah Rehmer Dates: 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27 Time: 7-9:30pm, Upstairs Studio This session will focus on the use of paper and encaustic. We will explore altering our own papers with inks and other materials, as well as rust printing. Basics will be covered, so experience with encaustic is not needed for this class, however, prior art making experience will be helpful. Limit 7 students. $10 due at first class for teacher supplied materials, see supply list for other needed. See website for Supply List.
4 WEDNESDAY W #10 Portrait Drawing Instructor: Tony Crnkovich Dates: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, 1/31, 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28 Time: 10am - 12:30p, upstairs studio With the portrait drawing class, students will be helped to understand and execute the basic principles involved in capturing a likeness on paper. These principles include hand/eye coordination, gesturing, and shading to achieve solidity of form. Students must supply a photo of someone of their choice to draw from. See website for Supply List. #11 Watercolor Painting Instructor: Carmelo Schifano Dates: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, 1/31, 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28 Time: 1-3:30p, first floor studio Feel you may be intermediate or advanced in watercolors? Dive in and create simple compositions from your own references. See how a limited color palette can give you beautiful translucent results. Develop simple Value Studies. Having to struggle with the Principles and Elements of Art? See how you can manipulate these simple guidelines in your own work. Leave fear at home and come have fun creating watercolor paintings. See website for supply list. #12 Level I - II Oil Cold Wax Limit 8 Students Instructor: Charlotte Cziperle Dates: 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28 Time: 1-3:30p, upstairs studio Beginning-Intermediate level class, all levels are welcome. Have fun experimenting with the oil & cold wax process in a relaxed learning environment. You will learn how to incorporate cold wax with oil paints to create interesting layered abstract paintings. Weekly class demo, fundamentals about oil & cold wax, color mixing, and composition will be discussed. Participants will explore their own individual abstract style, instructor feedback and critique with each class. See website for supply list. Fee: $68M $76NM 4 Weeks #13 Watercolor Without Fear Instructor: Carmelo Schifano Dates: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, 1/31, 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28 Time: 6-8:30pm, first floor studio Have fun and eliminate your fears. Anyone can do it! Create a colorful suggestive and loose painting. No experience is needed with this step-by-step approach. Focus of this class is to have fun creating and exploring the use of brush strokes and color. See website for supply list. #14 Exploring Personal Style with Dry Media Ages 14+ Instructor: Abbey Denlinger Dates: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, 1/31, 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28 Time: 6:30-9pm, upstairs studio From basic design principles, to creating a final art piece based on your vision, this class will provide tools and practice to bring out the best of your creative potential! Using various dry media, artists will learn how to use sketching, and drawing exercises to explore the subject matter and style of their personal artwork. Artists will work in both an expressive style as well as working with realism to find what works best for them in bringing their artistic vision to life! 5 THURSDAY TH #15 Painting Animals Instructor: Kelley Clark Dates: 1/11, 1/18, 1/25, 2/1, 2/8, 2/15, 2/22, 3/1 Time: 10am-12:30pm, upstairs studio Explore your personal connection to animals and art. This class is an introduction to drawing and painting animals with an emphasis on the development of visual awareness. Experimentation and exploration of techniques and subject matter will be achieved through the use of various media including pencil, charcoal, ink, and acrylic paints. Projects will emphasize development of technical skill. See website for supply list. #16 Pastel Painting Instructor: Julie Skoda Dates: 1/11, 1/25, 2/1, 2/8, 2/15, 2/22 Time: 1-3:30pm, upstairs studio Class is open to beginners through advanced painters. Each week we will experiment with different approaches and techniques available in pastel painting in a relaxing atmosphere. FRIDAY #19 Drawing Made Easy F Instructor: Robert Pennor Dates: 1/12, 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, 3/2 Time: 9:30a-12pm, first floor studio Learn in a friendly classroom. This class is for the beginner to intermediate student. The class will cover: line, form, shading, perspective and composition. The students will draw along with the instructor as he talks about various subjects including: animals, birds, people and landscapes. Photographic images will be supplied. 6 FRIDAY F #20 Acrylic Painting Made Easy Instructor: Robert Pennor Dates: 1/12, 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, 3/2 Time: 1-3:30pm, first floor studio Acrylic paints are easy to use and create beautiful, colorful paintings. Learn from an award winning instructor. You will learn about color mixing, tools and composition. Personal guidance will be given. This class will be a fun painting and learning experience. SATURDAY S #21 Winter Art Around the World Ages 7-11 Instructor: Kathi Parisi Dates: 1/13, 1/20, 1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, 3/3 Time: 1-3:30pm, upstairs studio DISCOVER, IMAGINE AND CREATE amazing art while you explore a variety of mediums, techniques and winter themes related to art. Join us as we travel to see the Aurora Borealis in Iceland, watercolor polar bears in Alaska, visit China for Chinese New Year art, study techniques with collage on canvas and experience the old art of paper making with seeds. Ages 7-11 snack and supplies included. Fee: $172NM 8 Weeks #22 Silk Painting - Three Styles Limit 7 Students Instructor: Carolyn Thomas-Davidoff Dates: 1/13, 1/20, 1/27 Time: 10am-12:30pm, upstairs studio Would you like to learn how to paint your own scarves? We will explore three styles of silk painting, which will be: Microwave, Shibori, and Acid dying. Microwave dying creates easy, one of a kind scarves with rich blendings of color. Shibori will explore Japanese style pole wrapping and painting of scarves. Acid dying involves dipping silk into pots of color for vibrant results. All materials will be provided. There is a materials fee of $36 for the silk. Fee: $51M $57NM 3 Weeks WORKSHOPS #23 The Elusive Image, Photo + Encaustic WORKSHOP F Limit 7 Students Instructor: Sarah Rehmer Friday January 5, 2018 through Sunday January 7, 2018, 9am - 4pm; upstairs studio This workshop will focus on combining photography with encaustic painting techniques as a way to present your photographically based works in a more tactical way that pushes what mixed media means. Over the course of the workshop will explore different paper printing options for our photographs- from fine art papers, Asian paper and anything in between. From there we will take our photographic prints and embed them in the encaustic wax medium, which will allow us to over paint them, apply image transfers, color glazes and hand coloring techniques. Basics of working with encaustic paint, studio set up, safety measures and more will all be covered in the workshop. You do not need prior experience working with encaustic paint, but general art making experience and understanding of digital photography work-flow will be helpful. Instructor will supply paint and medium plus all equipment and brushes needed for use during the workshop, as well as all printing equipment and paper. Fee: $318M $415NM
7 WORKSHOPS W #24 Mosaic Pendant WORKSHOP(S) Instructor: Sue Klein Limit 10 Students a. Sunday January 14, 2018, 1-3:30pm, first floor studio b. Sunday February 18, 1-3:30pm, first floor studio This one-afternoon workshop will introduce you to the various types of Mosaic Jewelry, you'll learn the brief history of Pietra Dura and Micromosaic, see examples and then create a mosaic pendant of your own. You'll cut Italian smalti opaque glass with wheeled glass nippers and assemble your design using Apoxie Sculpt in small metal pendant frames. All materials are provided, an additional charge if sterling silver is requested. Remember your eye glasses for close work. Limit 6. Fee: $45M $55NM #25 Parent/Child Pizza & Paint Night SPECIAL EVENT Ages 7-12 Instructor: Marlo Steinke Saturday February 17th 6-9pm Enjoy a special Parent/ Child evening out! Start the night by visiting at each art station where you will learn some cool art techniques and dine on delicious pizza with those you have come to spend the evening with! We will then all paint a wonderful wintery scene led by instructor Marlo Steinke. It's a full night of fun, creativity and 2 great paintings you'll have to warm your winters with memories for11+ Ages years to come! Fee: $70 per pair $25 each additional child Limit 11 Students #26 CoLoR (Theory) 1 day WORKSHOP Instructor: Maggie Capettini Saturday Saturday February 24th 1-3:30pm, 1st floor studio Learn your way round the color wheel in this one-day workshop. You probably know the basics get ready to dive deeper. We will use the primary colors of pigment plus white to explore color mixing, color schemes, and creating grays using color. Supplies 9x12 spiral-bound heavy weight sketchbook, 4 tubes acrylic paint, brushes, pencil, eraser Fee: $32NM Limit 7 Students #27 R&F Comprehensive Encaustic 4 day WORKSHOP Instructor: Sarah Rehmer Thursday March 8 through Sunday March 11 9am-4pm, upstairs studio Following a historic overview of encaustic, students are introduced to current approaches to studio setup, tools and health and safety. With a strong emphasis on approaching wax as a painting media, students become familiar and comfortable with brushwork, fusing, and layering. This class examines specific characteristics that make wax a unique material to work with including opacity, temperature, adhesion, and texture. Encaustic is adaptable to other media and artistic process, additional techniques we explore include collage, printmaking, image transfer, and combining oil and wax. After each demonstration participants have time to work for hands on with the wax and explore each technique at your own pace following an individual direction. There will be ample opportunities to ask the instructor questions on additional topics of interest. Artists working in any print or painting media will find this workshop an exciting opportunity to grow their visual vocabulary with wax. Sign up online at rfpaints.com/workshops/upcomingworkshops #28 Abstract Mixed Media Collage 3 Day WORKSHOP Instructor: Laura Lein-Svencner Friday March 16 through Sunday March 18 9am - 4pm, upstairs studio The Medium of Collage illustrates not only where it has been but also where it is going; blurring the boundaries of possibilities, exposing rich storylines of experimentation while aiding in each student s visual vocabulary. The use of color, texture and imagery will be emphasized through the layering of altered collage papers and acrylics. Students will be encouraged to build their own palette of papers. The connections to composition through design principles will be taught along with the intuitive process visually associated with the fine art of collage. Tack irons will be used to fuse the collage papers to a variety of desired surfaces. Clear image transfer technique will also be taught using the tack iron fusing method. Whether new to collage or more experienced, this workshop is designed to engage all levels of interest in the contemporary medium of collage. Fee: $300M $325NM

One- and two-point perspective, optical perspective, and drawing through will be presented and practiced in this two-day workshop. Whether it is clothing, drapery, backdrops or a tablecloth you will learn how to paint / draw it with confidence. Topics include : the seven common folds, how to blend values, lighting, and more. Each participant will have a drapery set-up to paint in the medium of their choice. All supplies included with a workbook. Workshop Cancellation Policy: A $25 administration fee will be held on any workshop registration should you need to cancel 8 days or more before a workshop. Cancellations less than 8 days before the start of a class will not be refunded. Admin fee will be withheld. Student cancellations of 8 or more days before the start of class will be refunded their fee less a $15 admin fee. Class Cancellation Policy: Classes cancelled by LGAL due to low enrollment will be offered a full refund.
