2 ADULT CLASSES INTRO TO CERAMICS WITH DARIA Instructor: Daria White Wednesdays, October 5 to December 7, 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm Explore the possibilities of clay in this 9 week class geared for beginners. Students will learn the basic techniques of wheel throwing and hand building. Tuition fees includes 24 hours total of out-of-class time during Open Studio hours, 25 pounds of stoneware clay and all firing, slips and glazes. New students will need to purchase a basic pottery tool kit available for $20 at the first class. BASIC AND CONTINUING CERAMICS WITH DARIA Instructor: Daria Kim Wednesdays, October 5 to December 7, from 6:30 to 9:00pm *Please note there will be no class November 23rd Geared for beginners and those looking to expand their skills. In this class students will learn both basic techniques of wheelthrowing, hand building, slip/glaze/stain/wash/terra-sigilata application, and the power of form. Tuition fees include 24 hours total of out-of-class time during Independent Studio hours, 25 pounds of stoneware clay and all firing, slips and glazes. ADVANCED CERAMICS WITH DARIA Instructor: Daria Kim Mondays, October 3 to December 5, from 6:30 to 9:00pm *Please note there will be no class November 21st This 8 week course is for students who are comfortable with the basics and want to continue their development in wheel-throwing, handbuilding and glazing techniques. Explore new ways of combining thrown and hand built forms, and experiment with different materials. Experienced students may work at their own pace with individual assignments. FUNCTIONAL HANDBUILDING WITH CLAY Thursdays, October 6 to December 1, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm *Please note there will be no class November 24th This introductory class will present students with easy-to-make options for building cups, bowls and plates using handbuilding techniques. 3 ADULT CLASSES WHEELTHROWING 101 Session 1: Instructor: Marc McCay Tuesdays, October 4 to November 22, from noon to 2:30 pm Session 2: Instructor: Shannon Nelson Tuesdays, October 4 to November 22, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm This 8 week course is a great introduction to the exciting process of wheel thrown ceramics. Developed for students with little or no clay experience, the class covers basic skills at the potter s wheel for creating functional work. WHEELTHROWING 102 Thursdays, October 6 to December 1, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm This 8 week course is designed for students looking for a new challenge and have completed a beginner level course within the last 5 years. This class will go beyond the basics to improve form, construction and surface design techniques. INDEPENDENT STUDIO: CERAMICS 26 HOUR PASS October 8 to December 15 Pass is good for 26 total hours. You will be notified when you have exceeded your hours. If you have taken at least two Art Center ceramic courses in the past two years (OR have previous clay experience and attended at least one class at the Art Center in the last 2 years), you can work independently in the Art Center ceramic studios during set hours. Wheel use is not guaranteed and instruction is not provided. No refunds of any kind will be issued for Independent Studio purchases regardless of the reason. INDEPENDENT STUDIO JEWELRY: 26 HOUR PASS October 8 to December 8 Independent Studio is for students who have taken Beginning Jewelry at the Art Center and would like to work independently. All equipment and benches are open on a first-come, first-serve basis. Independent Studio Pass is for 26 Total hours. Please note no refunds of any kind will be issued for independent studio purchases regardless of the reason.passes expire at the end of the term, and unused hours cannot be carried over. Multiple passes can be purchased per term.

4 ADULT CLASSES BEGINNING JEWELRY & METALSMITHING Session 1: Instructor: David Dziedzic Mondays, October 3 to November 21, from 6:30 to 9:00pm Session 2: Instructor: David Dziedzic Wednesdays, October 5 to November 23, from noon to 2:30pm This class geared towards beginners will emphasize the design concepts and basic metalsmithing techniques used to create metal jewelry. Students with previous experience may also join to refine techniques and develop personal style. Bring a sketchbook and pencil to the first class. The lab fee includes 24 hours of Independent Studio time outside of class. Jewelry kits that include needed materials and tools will be available for purchase the first day of class. JEWELRY & METALSMITHING II Instructor: Kristine Haddox Thursdays, October 6, 2016 to December 1, from 6:30 to 9:00pm *Please note there will be no class November 24th This 8 week class will emphasize refining design concepts and will introduce advanced techniques used to create metal jewelry. This class is for students who already have taken a course in basic metalsmithing. Tuition includes 24 hours of Jewelry Independent Studio time outside of class. Additional materials may need to be purchased. CASTING METALS Instructor: David Dziedzic Wednesdays, October 5 to November 23 from 6:30 to 9:00pm Are you a jewelry student interested in learning specifically about casting metals? This 8 week course is meant for students with past experience working with jewelry and metalsmithing and will focus specifically on the process of casting metals. BASICS OF ACRYLIC PAINTING Instructor: Payton Cook Wednesdays, October 5 to November 23, from 6:30 to 9:00pm This class is designed for individuals who are new to acrylic painting but are interested in learning the foundations and improving their skill. You will begin by learning about tone, shades, color mixing, and acrylic painting techniques. Throughout the course you will complete projects that will enhance your understanding of the process of acrylic painting.

5 ADULT CLASSES ACRYLIC PAINTING 102 Instructor: Payton Cook Mondays, October 3 to November 21, from 6:30 to 9:00pm This class is geared towards those with previous experience in the medium of acrylic paint and are looking to continue pushing their work forward in a fun collaborative environment. BEGINNING DRAWING Session 1: Instructor: Blythe Miles Mondays, October 3 to November 21, from 12:00 to 2:30pm Session 2: Instructor: Blythe Miles Mondays, October 3 to November 21, from 6:30 to 9:00pm In this course students will learn the basic skills needed to make realistic drawings. They will practice accurately rendering shapes, and how to see light and shadow. There will be many demonstrations and discussions, as well as individual and group instruction. It is intended for people who have little or no experience drawing so there is no need to be nervous! EXPLORING THE PORTRAIT Instructor: Brian Skol Wednesdays, October 5 to November 23, from 12:00 to 2:30 pm This class is geared towards students with past drawing experience looking to begin exploring the genre of the portrait. Students will work from live models and engage with concepts of facial structure and composition. Students are encouraged to bring their drawing medium of choice to the first class where additional materials will be discussed. BASICS OF COLORED PENCILS Instructor: Payton Cook Wednesdays, October 5 to November 23, from 1:00pm to 3:30pm Basics of Colored Pencils is designed for individuals who are new to drawing using professional colored pencils but are interested in learning the foundations and improving their skill. You will begin by learning about tone, shading, and blending using colored pencils. We will complete small studies of master artworks as well as larger original works. 6 ADULT CLASSES CONTEMPORARY PASTELS Instructor: Payton Cook Mondays, October 3 to November 21, from 10:00am to 12:30pm In this class geared towards beginners students will explore the versatile medium of soft pastels. Students will complete four different projects using soft pastels and learn a variety of techniques. Absolutely no experience is necessary! ART IN THE BOTANICAL GARDENS Instructor: Payton Cook Wednesdays, October 5 to October 26, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm Learn to beautifully capture the plants, flowers, and landscape in one of Ann Arbor s premier gardens this fall. Work in the medium of your choice for four weeks on location at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Emphasis is placed on learning to simplify your compositions while organizing form, value, and color. Discover tips to strengthen your work all while enjoying the abundance of color. Class will meet indoors in case of inclement weather. Bring your preferred medium, supplies, and a portable easel. INTRO TO OIL PAINTING Tuesdays, October 4 to November 22, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm This course is a great introduction to the luscious medium of oil paint, with it s brilliant colors, richly textured, shiny surfaces and hundreds of years of history. Absolutely no experience is necessary! CONTINUING OIL PAINTING Instructor: Brian Skol Wednesdays, October 5 to November 23, from 6:30 to 9:00pm This class is geared towards those with previous experience in the medium of oil painting. Students will have two different choices for study in this class, with each choice emphasizing a different approach and technique in oil painting. If the student has a painting already underway, or are just starting or finishing a painting, they can bring that painting in to work on and get feedback, if they so desire. There will also be a different, weekly still life for study, every week.

7 ADULT CLASSES BEGINNING WATERCOLOR Session 1: Instructor: Claudia Selene Thursdays, October 6 to December 1, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm Session 2: Instructor: Claudia Selene Thursdays, October 6 to December 1, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm This course is an introduction to the basic tools and techniques of the lovely and luminous medium of watercolor. There will also be some time to work on self-directed projects. WATERCOLOR 102 Instructor: Claudia Selene Thursdays, October 6 to December 1, from 1:00 to 3:30 pm This class is geared towards those with previous experience in the medium of watercolor and are looking to continue pushing their work forward in a fun collaborative environment. 4 WEEK EXPLORING MATERIALS Instructor: Payton Cook Wednesdays, November 2 to November 23, from 10:00am to 12:30pm Are you looking to explore new materials and mediums but are not sure where to begin? During this four-week course, we will explore several different unusual media and discuss how to incorporate it into your work. For example, instead of drawing with a pencil, how about using water-soluble graphite instead? No experience is required and all materials will be provided by the Art Center. ENCAUSTIC EXPLORATION Instructors: Beth Billups and Deb Eyde Tuesdays, October 4 to November 29, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm *Please note there will be no class November 22nd Encaustic is the ancient art of painting with a combination of beeswax, damar resin and colored pigments. The mixture is applied hot and each layer of wax is fused with heat to create a single bonded surface that is full of luscious color and depth.this introductory level class will cover safe studio practices, surface preparation, materials, texture and transfers. 8 ART LAB CLASSES DIGITAL PAINTING (ADULTS) Instructor: Jerry Wang Thursdays, October 6 to December 1, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm Digital painting is a relatively new medium and a powerful tool for creating art. Unlike any previous mediums in history digital painting gives you the ability to express your creativity in a fast and easy way. Join us for a comprehensive course in digital painting that will focus on developing skills and techniques using Adobe Photoshop. You will learn how to use a drawing tablet to produce illustrations, drawings and designs. Additionally, you will learn about basic and traditional drawing methods for developing preliminary sketches and studies. GRAPHIC NOVEL ACADEMY (AGES 9-12) Instructor: Jerzy Drozd Fridays, October 7 to December 9, from 4:30pm to 6:00pm *Please note there will be no class on October 14th and November 25th Join Graphic Novelist Jerzy Drozd and design your own comics in this class for 9-12 year olds. Throughout the course, play with various formats such as mini-comics, serialized comics, and graphic novels, and try your hand at using many of the materials used by comics professionals. Every week will conclude with a game designed to boost creativity! All materials included. MANGA STUDIO FOR TEENS Instructor: Jerzy Drozd Thursdays, October 6 to December 8, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Take your pencil and ink drawings to the next level and get some hands-on experience with one of the most versatile tools in digital comics illustration! Professional cartoonist Jerzy Drozd (Author of the The Warren Commission Report) will help you transform your pen and paper drawings through Manga studios technology. All students will start with creating an original physical drawing and exploring the tools to digitally transform them. HAND DRAWN ANIMATION FOR ADULTS Instructor: Adele Hawkins Tuesdays, October 4 to November 22, from 6:30 to 9 pm Learn to turn your drawings into animations! Adele Hawkins will introduce you to the art of traditional, hand-drawn animation. Absolutely no experience is necessary.

9 COMPOSITING IN PHOTOSHOP (ADULTS) Instructor: Morgan Barrie Tuesdays, October 4 to November 22, from noon to 2:30 pm This class will introduce students to compositing multiple images together in Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn basic image editing before exploring how different photographs can be combined to make a cohesive final image. No photography or Photoshop experience is required! Parents and children will work on their own pottery wheels while learning together and sharing the wonderfully tactile adventure of creating functional and decorative objects out of clay! Instructions will be included on the basics of wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, surface decorating, and glazing. Come with a playful spirit and wear clothes you do not mind getting messy! 10 YOUTH & TEEN CLASSES ADVANCED TEEN FIGURE DRAWING (AGES 13-17) Instructor: Lawrence Sekulich Saturdays, October 1 to November 19 from 10:30am 12:30pm Advanced Teen Figure Drawing will offer students the opportunity to move forward in their study of drawing from a live model. Large and small scale drawing will be investigated. Using the human figure as a source of design or abstraction will present many compositional challenges. Placing the figure into an environment, real and / or imagined, will provide the artist with endless drawing possibilities The use of color will also be explored along with the necessary related media. To get the most out of this course it is recommended that you have taken Beginning Teen Figure Drawing. CLAY ARCHITECTS (AGES 5-9) Sundays, October 2 to October 23, from 12:30 to 2:00pm A fun introduction to working with clay for those ages 5-9. Students will learn clay construction techniques while letting their imaginations dream up some amazing elements of a clay city scape. Fun shapes and bold buildings will start to come to life! No experience in clay is necessary and all materials will be provided. Just dress for a mess and come make your own unique clay creations. CLAY ENGINEERS (AGES 5-9) Sunday, October 30 to November 20, from 12:30 to 2:00pm A fun introduction to working with clay for those ages 5-9. Students will learn clay construction techniques while letting their imaginations dream up some amazing designs. Thinking about unusual modes of transportation students will leave with some one-of-a-kind creations! No experience in clay is necessary and all materials will be provided. Just dress for a mess and come make your own unique clay creations. CREATING IN CLAY (AGES 10-15) Fridays, October 7 to November 11, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm In this 6 week class explore the art of wheel throwing and handbuilding with clay! Learn best practices and techniques of working with clay and discover the science and beauty of glazing. Students may repeat this class, as practice makes perfect and our instructors work with each student at their individual skill level.
