1 117 Bolt Hill Road, Eliot Maine (207) For more information visit our website at or us at We are proud of the caliber of our Artist/Instructors. Visit our website for biographies and images of their work Fall 2011 Art Class & Workshop Schedule Drawing, Painting & Illustration SA 1 DRAWING & WATERCOLOR Russ Whitten, 10 Weeks Monday 9-12 October 3 December 5 Tuition $295 Model Fee $40 This class will provide training in the direct observation of form and its surrounding elements. The emphasis will be on controlling watercolor media and tonal drawing to re-create the appearance of nature. The development of forms as derived from the study of perspective, composition, value and color will play as the foundation for this class. Topics include still life, landscape, and figure. Materials list sent upon registration. SA 2 CAPTURING COLOR IN PASTEL Norma Machado, 6 Weeks Monday 1-4 October 17 November 21 Tuition $230 This course is designed for both novice and beginner as well as for the intermediate pastellist who wants to take a refresher course. Students will learn the language of color by exploring various techniques of pastel painting including creating color with color (overlaying several colors in order to produce secondary and tertiary colors). The hands on painting sessions will primarily be in a landscape theme with an emphasis on creating color harmony. Group critiques and individual guidance will be given. Materials list sent upon registration SA 3 FIGURE WITH EXPRESSION Dustan Knight, 6 Weeks Monday 6-9 September 19 October 24 Tuition $230 Model Fee $65 Interested in a freer, more expressive approach to the figure? Here is your chance as we immerse ourselves in an intense drawing workshop that begins with the energetic gesture, explores the figure in light and shadow and specific illumination strategies. Finally we will consider the notion of the dramatic figure narrative. This is not your usual drawing class - it unlocks the individual expressive artist within. Though primarily charcoal and pencil, we may explore additional materials as well.

2 SA 4 EXPLORING ABSTRACTION Dustan Knight, 5 Weeks Monday 6-9 November 7 December 5 Tuition $200 Tired of trying to force your art to look like something realistic? Love the bold graphics and crazy splashes of American's great abstract artists? Only a small part of the Art Pie is realism...most artists practice a level of abstraction in their work. Explore several different approaches to abstraction with MFA Teacher Dustan Knight. Using the art materials of your choice each class meeting is devoted to an abstract concept. For example Expressive Abstraction is a type of expression that emphasizes the artist's emotional expressions over realistic rendering. Formal abstraction is based on ideas of color theory or composition using simplified shapes such as stripes or geometric shapes. There will be frequent references and discussion of famous artists who are known for their abstract work. Come try something beyond realistic rendering...try abstraction! SA 5 LANDSCAPE & WATERCOLOR Dewitt Hardy 12 Weeks Tuesday 2-5 September 27 December 13 Tuition $320 This workshop for beginning and intermediate watercolorists encompasses a broad study of technique. Clean wash fundamentals, volumes, composition, color, drawing, and spatial relationships will be explored. We will begin with the study of landscapes as long as we can work outside, then switch to painting from imagination. Demonstrations by the instructor illustrate all techniques. Students will be evaluated at their own level. Materials list sent upon registration. SA 6 FLORALS & STILL LIFE IN WATERCOLOR Dewitt Hardy, 12 Weeks, Tuesday 10-1 September 27 - December 13 Tuition $320 This class is for those students who are ready for intensive work. The first half of the class will have an emphasis on drawing and the build-up of clean washes, as we brush-up on watercolor fundamentals- volumes, color, and composition, as a transition into painting florals, still life, and, if time and inclination permit, exploration of the nuances of painting the clothed human figure through the translation of volumes and color. Materials list sent upon registration. If a model is used, money will be collected to pay for the model at the beginning of that project. SA 7 BASIC/ INTERMEDIATE DRAWING Carol Ann Morley, 12 Weeks Tuesday 6 9 September 27 December 13 Tuition $320 Lab fee $5 Students learn the fundamentals of representational drawing in a relaxed atmosphere. Beginning with techniques on how to handle your drawing tools and exercises to observe shapes in space and tonal values, you will progress to sketching, shading methods and drawing from still life. The course will cover contour drawing, perspective, composition and creative expression. The emphasis of the course will be on drawing still life subjects, but will also include some study of landscape. Graphite pencil will be used throughout the course along with conte', micron pen, and colored pencil. Open to any level. More advanced students can use this class to advance their own drawing skills, work on class studies or their own personal drawing. SA 8 COLOR & COLLAGE IN ABSTRACTION ShiaoPing Wang, 3 Weeks Tuesday 6-9 October 11, 18, 25 Tuition $140 In this course we investigate the power of color, as a pictorial structure and expression. Students will bring 3 representational images (a master painting, a photograph, or his/her paintings) and learn to distill them into abstraction. Collage is an option to be used in the later stage of the work. No previous experience required. Materials List sent upon registration.

3 SA 9 INSIDE/ OUTSIDE (Water Media) Dustan Knight, 5 Weeks Wednesday 9 12 September 28 October 26 Tuition $200 SA 10 GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA Kim Case, 3 Weeks Wednesday 1-4 November 2-16 Tuition $140 Keep the summer dreams of out door painting alive with this Fall weather, all level, water media class. Emphasis on sketching, designing, and values, progressing into color and painting techniques in acrylic, watercolor and gouache. This class is designed to work outside on location or in the studio using photos and sketches. Basics of landscape painting are broken down into simple weekly exercises which are demonstrated by the Instructor and then mastered by participants. Fun and informative (Instructor demos in pencil and watercolor). The digital age has put a camera within everyone s reach, but moving the settings off Auto is still daunting to many, leaving them with lackluster results from their investment. This class will put the creative control in your hands as we demystify your settings and introduce you to what all your camera functions are, how to get the best results, and how to manage your digital files once you have them. We will set up a few shoots in order to practice what we learn. Bring your digital camera, DSLR (detachable lense) or point-andshoot along with your camera s manual and a laptop. On the final day we will reserve time for one-on-one instructions.
