This course is for the beginner as well as the more advanced drawer. Materials list sent upon registration. SA 2 ILLUSTRATING CHILDREN S BOOKS Teri Weidner, 10 Weeks Wednesday 6 9 (Sept. 30 Dec. 9) Limit 10 Tuition $290 Learn the process for illustrating a children s book, from rough thumbnail sketches to a 10-to-16 page mock-up. We ll study elements such as page design, character development, and pacing, and explore how to combine them to create a compelling book. This class is open both to beginners and to those already acquainted with the field. Students are welcome to bring a book idea to develop in class, although the focus of the class will be on developing the illustrations rather than the writing. SA 3 BOTANICALS, BUTTERFLIES & BEES 12 Weeks, Carol Ann Morley Thursday 1 4 (Sept. 24 Dec. 17) Tuition: $300 Plant Fee $10 Learn the traditional art of botanicals and create a botanical drawing with the flowing form of flowers and their accompanying garden insects. From pencil studies of flowers and insects you will apply simple methods of design to compose multiple images into a pleasing arrangement to complete a botanical drawing in colored pencil. Instructional focus includes; observational skills, drawing skills, designing from live flowers and photo references, creating a colored palette and a variety of colored pencil techniques. Suitable for any level, individual expression will be encouraged. SA 4 BASIC/ INTERMEDIATE DRAWING Carol Ann Morley, 12 Weeks Thursday 6 9 ( Sept. 24 Dec. 17) Tuition $300 Students learn the fundamentals of representational drawing in a relaxed atmosphere. Beginning with techniques on how to handle your drawing tools and exercises to observe shapes in space and tonal values, you will progress to sketching, shading methods and drawing from still life. The course will cover contour drawing, perspective,composition and creative expression. While the emphasis will be on drawing still life forms, some study of landscape and figure drawing will be included. Graphite pencil will be used throughout the course with the addition of pen and colored pencil for sketching. Open to any level. More advanced students can use this class to advance their own drawing skills, work on class studies or their own personal drawing.

2 PAINTING SA 5 PORTRAIT IN WATERCOLOR Russ Whitten, 10 Weeks Monday 10 1 (Sept. 28 Nov. 30) Tuition $290 Model Fee $90 This class will provide training in direct observation to recreate portraiture in watercolor media. The emphasize will be on controlling watercolor media and re-creating the appearance of nature. The development of forms as derived from the study of perspective, anatomy, value and color will play as the foundation for this class. Materials list sent upon registration. SA 6 PAINTING LANDSCAPES WITH CONFIDENCE (Oil Painting Studio Class) Mary Byrom, 10 Weeks Monday 6 9 (October 5 Dec. 7) Tuition $290 Level: Beginner to Intermediate This class is for oil painters who want to improve their skills for painting en plein air and in the studio. In this studio class, we will paint landscapes and do exercises that specifically focus on refining our handling of the medium and achieving the effects we want. We will learn how to mix and paint with fresh, clean color and how the use of form, line, value and temperature is important in good painting. We will learn how to make decisions and choices to keep our painting process on track. We will utilize memory exercises to improve our paintings. Students at all levels of painting will be able to improve through this process. This class will include short lectures, demos, sketching & short painting exercises for increasing skillful mastery of the medium and plenty of hands on practice for using new approaches and helpful practices. Supplies: A laptop computer for this class is helpful but not necessary. Materials list provided upon registration. SA 7 ADVANCED WATERCOLOR Dewitt Hardy, 12 Weeks, Tuesday 10 1 (Sept. 22 Dec. 8) Tuition $320 Model Fee $60 This class is for those students who are ready for intensive work. The first half of the class will have an emphasis on drawing and the build-up of clean washes, as we brush-up on watercolor fundamentals- volumes, color, and composition, as a transition into painting landscape, still life, and an exploration of the nuances of painting the human figure through the translation of volumes and color. Materials list sent upon registration. SA 8 SIMPLE WATERCOLOR Dewitt Hardy 12 Weeks Tuesday 2-5 (Sept. 22 Dec. 8) Tuition $320 This workshop for beginning and intermediate watercolorists encompasses a broad study of technique and subject matter. Clean wash fundamentals, volumes, composition, color, drawing, and spatial relationships will be explored. We will begin with the study of landscape painting, weather permitting, then switch to still life and floral painting. Demonstrations by the instructor illustrate all techniques. Students will be evaluated at their own level. Materials list sent upon registration. SA 10 INSIDE/ OUTSIDE (Drawing & Watercolor) Dustan Knight, 5 Weeks, Wednesday 9-12 (September 30 October 28) Tuition $200 Keep the dreams of out door painting alive with this all level, drawing and watercolor class. Emphasis will be on sketching, designing, and values, progressing into color and painting techniques. This class is designed to work outside on location or in the studio using photos and sketches. Basics of landscape painting are broken down into simple weekly exercises, which are demonstrated by the Instructor and then mastered by participants. Fun and informative. (Instructor demos in pencil and watercolor).

3 SA 11 STILL LIFE & FIGURE IN OIL Brett Gamache, 10 Weeks Wednesday 1 4 (Sept. 30 Dec. 9) Tuition $290 Model Fee $60 This course allows students to learn how to use their materials, apply new techniques, and ultimately help strengthen the fundamentals of painting. We will begin the course by working from still lives and later the human figure. The instructor provides one-on-one instruction, occasional demonstrations, and ends each class with a brief critique. Materials List sent upon registration. SA 12 REPRESENTATIONAL OIL PAINTING (All levels) Sean Beavers, 13 Weeks Wednesday 6-9 (Sept. 16 Dec. 16) Tuition $340 This studio class is for anyone from beginner to the advanced painter looking to develop their visual vocabulary and expression. From realism to expressionism, there are some simple methods that can significantly improve your oil painting, through the use of light, color, atmosphere and form. Students will be introduced to the knowledge and skills necessary to represent the world around them. Personal projects and assignments will help explore these concepts. Individual expression and growth will be encouraged. All painting levels will meet simultaneously, from beginner to advanced. Materials list presented at the first class. SA 13 HOW TO PAINT LIKE REMBRANDT Donna Harkins, One Weekend Saturday & Sunday 10 4 (October 24 & 25) Tuition $180 Saturday, students will loosely copy a Rembrandt self portrait, addressing his composition, use of light and shadow, color glazing, and paint handling, with an emphasis on chiaroscuro. Sunday, students will focus on a self portrait, using a mirror to interpret their own faces, utilizing the painting lesson from the first day. Any props such as hats, hair accessories or scarves are welcome and encouraged. The instructor will briefly demonstrate both days with individual attention as her main focus. Some drawing or painting experience is helpful, but something can be learned and enjoyed at any ability level. Materials list sent upon registration. SA 14 PAINT LIKE MASTER PAINTER CEZANNE Donna Harkins, One Weekend Saturday & Sunday 10 4 ( November 14 & 15) Tuition $180 Saturday students will interpret one of Cezanne's own works, analyzing the master's use of color, integrated line, and paint handling by loosely copying one of his still lifes. On Sunday, using the same principles, students will paint from a set up designed by the instructor, with an emphasis on structure through the use of complementary colors. The instructor will briefly demonstrate both days, with individual attention as her main focus. Some drawing and/or painting is helpful, but something can be learned and enjoyed at any ability level. SA 15 LIGHT, COLOR & MOOD- PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE Mary Byrom, 10 Weeks Saturday 9 12 (Sept. 26 Nov. 28) Tuition $290 Level: Beginner to Intermediate Supplies: Outdoor painting set up Materials list provided upon registration. SA 16 ARTIST; KNOW THYSELF Gail Sauter, 6 Weeks Thursday 4:15 5:45 (October 8 Nov. 12) Tuition $175 If you have always wanted to paint en plein air or if you already paint en plein air and want to reach new levels of skill, this is the class for you. Autumn is a beautiful time to be out painting, the temperatures are comfortable and the foliage is spectacular. Students will have fun gaining knowledge and skill painting pochades outdoors and larger studio pieces indoors. We will learn the how, why and what of good design, keying in a painting, the importance of seeing, design and composition, color, decision-making and how to make your paintings work. We will focus on seeing and painting the four value planes and 5 types of light while working with a limited out door palette for control and color harmony. This class will include short lectures, demos, short painting exercises for increasing skillful mastery of the medium and plenty of hands on practice for using new approaches and helpful practices. Creative Process Designed for artists to develop their skills in speaking powerfully about their work and create a strong artist statement,each session of this course will consist of a guided discussion focusing on aspects of the creative process. Discussion topics will include: Looking at who are you, where are you going in your work and why. The big picture- seeing yourself in relation to art history. Your personal approach to art making. Public response to your work and engaging with the public. Putting it all together.

4 Sculpture SA 17 PILES OF TILES Josh Dow & Lauren Holmgren 5 Weeks, Monday 5-8 Nov. 9, 16, 23 & Dec 7 Tuition $250 Lab Fee $100 (5 lbs. bronze included) Have you ever wanted to design your own tiles for your kitchen backsplash? Or maybe a tile for your stone patio walkway? In this class you will create bronze tiles for your own project. Let your imagination run wild with the possibilities! We will begin by creating the design out of oil clay, then make molds and cast multiples. We'll cast the tiles in bronze, using files and tools to clean them up and do a simple patina. Please join us for this Do it Yourself course! SA 18 REFINED RELIEF-Two Mold Process Jeffrey Briggs, 10 Weeks Wednesday 1-4 (Sept. 30 Dec. 9) Limit 6 Tuition $320 Lab Fee $190 Students will learn how to design for and sculpt in relief. Working with a hard, oil-based clay, they will makea preliminary mold, then refinethe work in plaster. A production mold will then be made for the final piece. All students will be supplied with the same size frame mounted on a backing board in preparation for the first mold. Students will have individual work stations with the necessary clay, tools and lighting. Students are asked to come to the first class with ideas of what they could like to create in mind. They will be assisted in making and analyzing a working drawing of their relief before beginning. SA 19 SOFT STONE CARVING Antoinette Prien Schultze 8 Weeks Thursday 10 1 (Oct. 1 Nov. 19) Limit 8 Tuition $280 Lab Fee $35 This class will focus on the creation of form in soft stone. Students who prefer carving in hard stone are welcome to do so. Each student can carve an object of interest to them or one will be suggested. Study and contemplation of the material's qualities and mass will determine the posture of the object to be carved. Students gain experience in the use of hand tools and will be introduced to several power tools. From the roughing out through to the finishing process the focus will be on balance, proportion, and refinement through shadow and light. Stone may be purchased on site or you may bring your own. Tools needed will be discussed at the first class. This class takes place at Antoinette's sculpture studio in Eliot. SA 20 FIGURE SCULPTURE: OPEN STUDIO Christopher Gowell, 10 Weeks Friday 12-3 (October 9 Dec.18) Tuition $260 Model Fee $100 This Open Studio is designed for the intermediate to advanced student who desires to sculpt from the live model and is fairly independent. The instructor will be sculpting throughout the 10 weeks and will teach primarily by example. One model will pose for the entire session so students can create an in-depth figure sculpture. Firing fees are extra, or the student may wish to contact Green Foundry at Sanctuary Arts for pricing on moldmaking and casting. SA 21 INCISIVE LETTER CARVING IN STONE Jim Henri, 2 Sessions Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 5:00, September 19 & 20 Limit 8 Tuition: $225 Explore this introductory, but comprehensive workshop in the craft of incisive lettering in stone. Participants will gain an in-depth working knowledge of the tools and techniques required to practice this ancient skill. Fundamental skills will be honed by both demonstrations and through hands-on exercises learning correct techniques for vertical, diagonal and curved strokes. Continuing with the basics, unique and difficult problem carving situations inherent to individual letters, such as letter A's diagonal, horizontal to diagonal junctures), will be resolved by further development of skills and an understanding of the limitations of the craft's tools, materials and methods. The objective of this workshop is the acquisition of essential skills and confidence to flourish on one's own. Tools, suppliers and recommended books list will be sent to all participants. 5 SA 22 A & B JEWELRY & METALSMITHING Alice Carroll, 12 Weeks SA 22 A, Monday 1 4 (September 21 December 7) SA 22 B, Thursday 6-9 (September 24 December 17) Tuition $320 Lab Fee $50 Jewelry, Stained Glass & Ceramics This beginning intensive will cover the use of basic hand tools and the primary techniques in making jewelry and metal objects. We will cover hot and cold connections, piercing, surface decoration, light forging, forming, and basic stone settings. We will also explore various ways of casting such as the use of cuttlebone and delft clay. Students are encouraged to create their own designs. Bring a sketchbook to class. More advanced students will receive one on one help in applying advanced techniques to their designs. The class will be a mixture of demonstrations, lectures, and studio time. (Silver may be purchased from instructor) SA 23 A & B STAINED GLASS Lynne Robertson, 8 Weeks 23 A Monday B Monday 6 9 (September 28 November 16) Limit 6 Tuition $280 Lab Fee $50 This beginners stained glass course is designed for those who have never worked with stained glass, or for those who have an elementary knowledge. With a focus on the techniques of the 'copper foil' method of construction developed by L.C. Tiffany, you will have a blast learning how to cut glass, work with copper foil, learning proper soldering methods and applying patina finishes to your masterpieces. When you have completed this course you will have several finished projects and a clear understanding of the basic skills used in the craft of stained glass. You will be introduced to the tools of the trade as well as most of the materials including the various types of glass available to the glass hobbyist, and how to find what you need once you are out on your own. Experiment with various hand-building techniques, using molds, and even the potter s wheel. In this class we will make cups, bowls, and plates, along with experimenting with your own ideas. You will also learn about glazing techniques and surface decoration. Inspiration will come from looking at historic and contemporary ceramics, including the art of Japanese food arrangement. Youth Art Classes Talking trees, dancing teacups and ships that fly through the sky- this class will help young students feed their imaginations and give more life to their ideas as they get them on the page. Students will also learn how to use a variety of drawing, painting and graphic design techniques and materials. Materials list: sketchbook, 4-b pencil, pencil sharpener, black ink pen, colored markers, water soluble colored pencils, assorted water color brushes. This studio class invites the artistically inspired teen to move up a few levels in their artistic development with a course based on first level of art college - foundation level - exercises and projects. Using drawing to gain deeper understanding of line, value, composition and design we will have fun doing studio work, talking and looking. By sharing the studio with other teens as motivated and interested, students will be able to learn more advanced concepts and skills. This session is primarily drawing and designing, in black and white and some color. We will also begin to learn the skills of critiquing. ALSO, a special walking 'field trip' to local Portsmouth galleries helps us get a feel about the REAL art scene and what it takes to be an artist.
