With an understanding of these principles students can more easily meet the challenges of plein air painting: working directly from nature, constantly changing light, and capturing the essence of a landscape quickly. Each day will be split into two parts, an in studio discussion of materials and techniques, and painting on location in the seacoast area. Students will need a portable easel, painting supplies, drinking water, food and sun protection. SA 2 WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPE Dewitt Hardy, One Week June 4-8 1:00 4:00 Daily Tuition: $235 This landscape painting workshop is designed for elementary and advanced watercolor students, painting in a seacoast location. Land, sea and sky are our topics as we strive to capture changing light and shadow. We will begin with simple landscape and progress to more complex spatial and formal pieces. We will stress mastering large shapes in light and shadow; space, both linear and atmospheric, and elementary color. Bring a French or watercolor easel if you have one, or you may bring a TV tray or small folding table. A materials list will be sent to each student to bring to the first class. SA 3 ABSTRACT PLEIN AIR (Water Media) Dustan Knight, 5 Weeks, Wednesday 9-12 May 18 June 15 Tuition $200 Interested in capturing your unique feelings and interpretations of an outdoors location without being tied to fussy details, lighting restrictions and attempts to render a scene like a camera? Well this class is about your artistic response to a scene...similar to Dustan's popular studio abstraction class. But Now we take it outside...fabulous locations around the seacoast will be selected and we will spend three days at one, two days at the next so you have a chance to really become involved with the location. Be ready for some non representation and crazy techniques...all water mediums; all levels for some art fun. SA 4 OUTDOOR PAINTING IN OIL Todd Bonita, 3 Weeks Tuesday 9-3 June 12, 19, 26 Tuition $250 This three day intensive workshop will focus on using outdoor sketches and plein air studies to execute a finished studio painting. An overview of outdoor composition and design theory will be discussed, as well as a demonstration of a simple approach to plein air painting. Our outdoor sketches and color studies will be used as tools to assist in the design of a more finished studio painting, which will be developed using a classical grisailles under painting, layering and glazing. This workshop is packed with practical information, demonstrations, and handouts and will be very fun. Supply list is provided upon registration.
