2 ArtStudio Spring For All Level Students Landscape Painting with Ray Mendieta Monday Evenings, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. April 8 June 17, (no class 5/27) 10-week session, $215 members/$235 general Drop-ins welcome: $30 per session California has a rich tradition of landscape painting. The western light has drawn artists from the era of California Impressionism to the present day. Landscape Painting with Ray Mendieta will help you refine your personal approach and response to this tradition. This class explores both traditional and contemporary methods of landscape painting. Students will work from photos as well as plein air studies. Head Drawing with Ray Mendieta Tuesday Evenings, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. April 9 June 11, 10-week session $280 members/$300 general (includes $65 model fee) Drop-ins welcome: $35 per session Achieving a likeness is easier than you think, once you learn the steps from seeing to applying your vision to paper. This class provides in-depth instruction of drawing principles, using live models. Gesture, proportion, shadow and edge control, and the rendering of light and dark on tone paper are some of the techniques to be explored. Portrait Painting in Oil with John Robert Peck Thursday Mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. April 11 June 13, 10-week session $280 members/$300 general (includes $65 model fee) Drop-ins welcome: $35 per session Learn to paint classical portraits using the timehonored techniques from European ateliers. This class is designed for artists who want to improve their skill at painting life-like portraits, while learning the methods employed by past masters. This class will improve your discernment at seeing facial shapes, as well as more accurate colors and values. Students will focus on using a limited palette of paints to achieve more harmony in the final painting. The skills of underpainting and the application of painterly effects will be studied. Live demonstrations of the painting process, as well as personal and encouraging critiques of student work will be provided at each class. Sculpture: Classic Human Figure with Kristin Lindseth-Rivera Friday Afternoons, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. April 12 May 31, 8-week session $290 members/$310 general, (includes $55 model fee) Join noted sculptor Kristin Lindseth-Rivera for this classic figure sculpture class, where artists of all levels experience sculpting from life. This class covers the basics of armature building and sculpting, following the approach used in the École des Beaux-Arts since before the turn of the 19th Century. Lindseth-Rivera has more than 20 years of experience in sculpting and teaching figurative sculpture and drawing. Professional models will hold one long pose for four consecutive sessions, with alternating male and female models. Turntables and pedestals are provided for working on, or artists may bring their own modeling stands. Uninstructed Life Drawing Open Studio All Media Wednesday Evenings, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. April 10 June 12, 10-week session (includes $65 model fee) For the serious artist, there is no substitute for drawing, painting and sculpting the figure from life. Join the Triton Museum of Art School s Uninstructed Open Studio class, where you will work directly from a live model in long-term poses. All media welcome. Bring your own easel and materials. Tables, pedestals and chairs provided. For Beginning to Intermediate Students Beginning Still Life & Oil Painting with Sandra Smith-Dugan Friday Mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. April 12 June 14, 10-week session Every great artist, every master painter, began his or her artistic journey by mastering the skills of producing a successful still-life. Through the use of still life objects and tableaus, students will learn about the characteristics of light and shadow, as they develop their ability to convey volume and form with oil paint. Students will work in a variety of techniques, including wet into wet and the alla prima style, and will start a new painting/oil sketch each session. Emphasis will be placed on design composition and drawing skills. Explorations in Drawing with Jeff Bramschreiber Friday Evenings, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. April 12 June 14, 10-week session By exploring traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing, students will learn the fundamentals of drawing and illustration techniques. Media explored will range from charcoal and pencil to conté, pastels, ink, and much more. Jeff Bramschreiber will introduce you to the various media as well as the historical use of each. A variety of surfaces, including illustration board, watercolor paper, and pastel paper will also be explored. Pastels with Jeff Bramschreiber Saturday Evenings, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. April 6 June 15, (no class 4/27), 10-week session Master pastel artist Jeff Bramschreiber shares the amazing versatility of both soft and oil pastels as students learn to create still lifes, landscapes, wildlife, and undersea subjects. This class explores the basics for color and techniques, playing with various combinations of mixed media, and the unique qualities each type of pastel have to offer. Projects will be studied in depth, over a number of classes, allowing the student to experience the creation of a serious pastel work from beginning to end, finishing with a critique, and even framing pointers.

3 ArtHistory At the Edge of Art History with Preston Metcalf Third Thursday of the Month, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. 5-Part Series began in January Drop-ins welcome at $20 per session March 21: Capturing the Inner-Image: Self Portraiture in the Hands of Masters This lecture will explore some of the best self-portraitists from history and how they transcend visual documentation to teach us more of what it means to be human. April 18: Europe Under Fire In 1937, Adolph Hitler and Herman Goering initiated the largest and most systematic art theft in history: the plundering of Europe s greatest masterpieces. This lecture will look at how special care was given to hiding and protecting Europe s most valuable art. May 16: Yes, But is it Pornography? In this lecture we will examine various claims of pornography throughout history and come to terms with a working definition that may help us in our own determinations. We will explore some of history s greatest masterpieces and the stories of their rise, decline, and rise again of their fortunes and estimations in the public eye. Master Workshop 3-Day Portrait Drawing in Pastel Workshop with Cuong Nguyen Friday, June 7, 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sat., June 8 & Sun., June 9, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m $310 members/$340 general Back by popular demand! On the heels of a successful 2-day workshop in December, we are fortunate to have award-winning artist Cuong Nguyen return to the Triton Museum of Art for a 3-day portrait workshop covering pastel drawing techniques. This workshop is designed to create a relaxed, informative, yet focused working environment for all skill levels. On Friday, Cuong will demonstrate his own techniques and give an introduction to get the weekend off to a great start. The core of the lesson will be based on drawing, values, edges, composition and creating life-like skin tone color. Students will focus on the fundamentals of drawing the human head while developing new skills in soft pastel. The workshop will feature a live model. Students will learn to use an approach that helps them see the big shapes first, and then go into details towards the end of the session. This is a great opportunity for you to discover your own passion for drawing, or just take your existing skills to the next level. Painting with Al Preciado Sunday, March 24, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Join us for an exciting class with artist, Al Preciado. Students will learn painting techniques using acrylic on canvas. Part of this workshop will be spent developing some basic drawing skills in landscape, portrait and abstraction. TeenStudio For High School Students Free, pre-registration required Drawing with Cuong Nguyen Back by popular demand! 4 Explorations in Art KidStudio Pre-K is designed to provide handson, art-rich experiences to young children and their caregivers using an age-appropriate curriculum that includes gallery exploration. Get messy and creative while exploring paint, sculpture and more! For Ages 3-5 Session G: Tuesdays, 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. March 26 - May 7 (No class 4/9) Drawing Class Experiment with strong lines, vibrant color and composition using various drawing materials such as charcoal, pencil, chalks, oil pastels and more. Learn new techniques that will bring your drawings to life! Students will look at modern and contemporary artists to draw inspiration and hone their visual skills and vocabulary. For Grades K-2 Session A: Tuesdays, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. March 26 - May 7 (no class 4/9) For Grades 6-9 Session F: Wednesdays, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. March 27 - May 8 (no class 4/10) Sessions for Grades K-2nd Explorations in Art I Every child loves to create. Explorations in Art I is designed to help students build a foundation to create successful works of art. Students will explore the elements of art to render more detailed drawings, create more expressive paintings and build imaginative sculptures. They will learn to use color to bring their works of art to life! Session AA: July 8-12, 9:00 a.m. to noon Session BB: July 8-12, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Explorations in Art II Explorations in Art II is designed to expand a child s awareness of what is possible in art. This session will encourage students to begin to think about the ideas and meaning behind great works of art as they learn to make more informed choices in their own work. They will learn to work with mixed media to create collages, monoprints, paintings and much more! Session CC: July 15-19, 9:00 a.m. to noon Session DD: July 15-19, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. KidStudio Spring Classes for Grades prek-9 Tuition: $85 members/$105 general SummerStudio For Grades K-5 Sculpture Class Learn to plan, execute and create imaginative sculptures. In this class, students will learn to transform their drawings into 3D. Students will explore form as they work with paper, plaster, recycled materials, wire and much more! For Grades K-2 Session B: Thursdays, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. March 28 - May 9 (no class 4/11) Session C: Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. April 6 - May 18 (no class 4/13) For Grades 3-5 Session D: Saturdays, 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. April 6 - May 18 (no class 4/13) Comic Book & Animation Drawing Workshop Learn comic book and animation drawing from international artist, Isis Rodriguez. In this class, Isis will share her art work and process. Students will learn basic drawing techniques, human proportion, and perspective in pencil, pen and ink. This class is a great introduction to develop, design and illustrate your very own comic book character. For Grades 6-9 Session E: Saturdays, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. March 9, 16, & 23 All classes run for one week; Tuition: $165 members/$185 general Mixed Media Sculpture Working in 3-D will be the focus of this week. In this class, students will explore form as they mold, sculpt and assemble various media. Students will learn to work with wire, plaster, paper mache, recycled materials and more as they sculpt the world as they imagine and dream it. Session EE: July 22-26, 9:00 a.m. to noon Sessions for Grades 3rd-5th Explorations in Art This session is designed to expand the older student s knowledge of the fundamentals of art to create more detailed, imaginative and expressive works of art. They will look to contemporary art as a means of inspiration to learn new techniques, explore different ideas/ meanings and learn to make more informed choices in their own work. Students will create work in both 2- and 3-dimension. Session FF: July 29-August 2, 9:00 a.m. to noon
