1 ONLINE ART CLASSES Information Personalised Online Art Classes are now available from Ajay s. It works very much like my actual classes. I spend some time with you teaching you like I do normally do with my students, demonstrating and giving you tasks to complete; only we do it on Skype instead. This will give you the opportunity to learn to draw, paint and sculpt anywhere in the world. We simply must synchronize! HOW IT WORKS: 1. s are based in real time I will be teaching and demonstrating to you on Skype. You may be alone or part of a few individuals. One session only lasts 20 minutes. The very first of each media or format will last longer. 2. After I explained the fundamentals to you, I will demonstrate it to you and then give you time to try and question me. You need a WhatsApp function on your cell phone, so we can exchange images in the session, unless you have two cameras in studio. The session will end there. You will receive homework to do you need to be able to send photographs of your homework as jpegs or pdfs to me. These can be photographed or scanned. 3. At our next Skype session, we will discuss your homework that you submitted. I will also suggest further practice or improvements if necessary before moving on to my next demo and your next task that you need to complete. 4. Even painting and sculpture will be in real time demonstrating every step to you. 5. There is a time limit per session and per project but we will have ample time to complete every task without rushing anything and to discuss all related issues. WHAT YOU NEED: You will be supplied with a detailed list of art material. 1. You need to be online, connected with the internet. 2. You need Skype on a computer, laptop or large tablet. 3. A decent smartphone or similar device to take good quality colour pictures with. 4. An active account. 5. WhatsApp to share photos when in session. 6. Studio space: A desk with good lighting and a webcam built into your electronic device or separately. Tracing, Projector or Fine Grid Methods used - it s an insult to any artist. R until June 2018 NO COST: Includes: 8 x 20-minute sessions (first one much longer) with personal tuition and demos specifically for you, although you may be part of a group of up to 4 people. The live sessions are not lesson-bound, it may roll over into the next lesson. Notes and instructions Marking and personal recommendations, follow-ups of readmissions In-depth recording, assessment and investigation of student s progress, orientation (likes and dislikes), suggested course and development suggestions. All kept in a personal electronic file available to the student and printing of his/her art work. Excluded: Materials Sessions longer, over and above the 8 permitted per student

2 Details of the lessons: My Foundation Drawing Course spans 20 years of teaching and has been developed and changed over the years to accommodate all fundamental concerns of observation, understanding and practice. It is built on repetition of these basics, but challenging you with more difficult issues that gets added every time you start a new lesson. The Online Drawing Course has also been amended to suit the internet based platform Basic Online Drawing Course Purpose: This lesson will teach you the MOST BASIC considerations of drawing. Materials: What you will need for the course. Warm-up and Orientation (LIVE): To alleviate stress and to get you focused. Proportioning (LIVE): Learn to observe and regard forms and space. Tonal Value (LIVE): Learn to observe darks, mid-tones and light. Shading (LIVE): Learn to shade correctly for a realistic effect. Observation (LIVE): Learn to really SEE something in front of you. Project (LIVE): Turn Form to Dimension through a step=by step method. Purpose: Change your perception on observation and the world around you. Learn to draw a live object. Materials: Same as 1. Warm-Ups (Live): Proportional and Shading warm-ups. Observation (Live): Object observation and drawing in the air. Mapping and Shading Corrections and Final Touches (LIVE): Learn how to add professional touches Purpose: Learn to draw from a picture - Landscape Materials: Same as 1, image will be sent to you. Printing required. Warm-Ups (Live): Proportional and Shading. Observation (Live): Learn to interpret an image correctly. Drawing (Live): Learn to measure and place masses Shading (Live): Learn to shade and to regard harmony. Texture and Detail and Final Touches (Live) Purpose: Learn to draw from a picture Object Purpose: Learn to Block Materials: Same as 1, image will be sent to you. Printing required. Observation (Live): Interpret your image. Blocking (Live): Learn to proportion correctly from a photograph, step by step. We continue with the steps of blocking and drawing (Live) x 3 ART MAKING BASICS: Materials: As with 1 with a few added supplies. Composition (Live): Learn to arrange elements in your painting. Includes exercises. Scaling (Live): Learn to draw from small to large (without a calculator!). Includes exercises. Perspective (Live): Learn to understand one point, two point and atmospheric perspective. Includes exercises. Harmony (Live): Learn to integrate and create a collective arrangement of elements within an artwork. Includes exercises. The Elements of Art (Live): Explore how line, shape, colour and other elements can create a thought provoking art work. Purpose: Learn to draw symmetrical shapes and objects Materials: Same as 1 Observation (Live): Learn how to observe symmetrical shapes.

3 Drawing, proportioning and mapping and shading (Live): Learn how to approach and systematically implement a system to make drawing easier. The feared ellipse will also be dealt with. Corrections and finishing touches (Live) Purpose: Expanding your drawing repertoire and improving your drawing skills through different drawing media. Materials: 1 plus charcoal and different papers. Drawing large and upright (Live): A major advancement for budding artists is to radically change the way you perceive and execute your art work. Composing a still life (Live): Learn to compose and to consider how space creates harmony. Drawing, mapping and shading with charcoal (Live): Learn to sketch and cope with charcoal. Purpose: Continue to explore more drawing media through finger drawing. Materials: 1 plus white pastel and Fabiano Paper. Choice of images will be sent to you. Drawing, mapping and shading (Live): This process was introduced by me in It involves the shared use of your eyes (optical), your fingers (touch) and your brain (perceptive) all at the same time to create a striking art work. Progress (Live) Purpose: Colour introduction and Live Drawing Materials: 1 and Soft (Chalk) Pastels Planning (Live): Set-up and lighting, drawing and mapping Using Pastels (Live): Learn to draw and shade and blend with pastels. Background: Earth your object by inserting the correct background. Purpose: To recap on everything you have done and studied in the previous lessons, and to determine and discuss problems, necessary exercises, practises and solutions. We will also discuss your way forward and you will receive a certificate. (Live) COLOUR Using colour correctly is difficult because if you use it without proper study it can become a circus. Colour needs to be contained, reflect what nature really delivers; and many people, unfortunately, assume colour is what the tube says. The truth is that colours in nature are all a series of neutralised hues that work together to create harmony, and owns an emotive influence in both figurative and modern art. There are many theories and schemes like the triadic, split-complimentary, monochromatic and so on. In this lesson I teach you the very essence of colour and where to start and what to observe. 1 Basic Colour s YOU CAN DO THESE LESSONS IN OILS, ACRYLIC OR WATERCOLOUR Purpose: This lesson will teach you the MOST BASIC considerations of how to use colour.

If you haven t painted with your particular choice of paints, I will introduce their abilities and mechanisms with you. The essence of the colour range. (Live) How colours challenge each other. (Live) Observation (LIVE): Learn to really SEE colour combinations Project (LIVE): Explore colour combinations Purpose: How to construct harmonious colour combinations in a painting (Live) Project: Simple and small Purpose: How to construct harmonious colour combinations in a painting (Live) Project: Slightly more intricate More colour lessons can follow these. OILS Oil Paint is the easiest to use of the paint family. Its lustrous nature takes longer to dry, allowing the artist to manipulate and change almost at will. The biggest hurdle to overcome in oil paint (all paints) are overworking and over blending. There are many techniques: underpainting (planning), alla-prima (direct), impasto (thick), glazing (layering), wet-on-wet, washing, palette knife and mixed media practices making oils extremely versatile. I believe it is best to sample all the techniques, so I have created short easy projects for each that is also small in size. At the same time, you will explore subject matter like landscape, object painting and still life, figurative and portrait elementals, but you will also have options for each technique. Thereafter you can start your own art work with your choice of medium and subject. You need to complete the How to Use Colour s first (in Oils). You also need to be able to draw competently. You need access to a freezer for storing mixed paints. All imagery passed on to you are original from me, you can use them and even sell your paintings. These lessons can also be completed using water based oils. 1 2 Basic Oil Paints Course Purpose: To teach you the importance of preparation for an art work. Materials: A complete run-down, explanation and check list of everything you need including paint colours, palette, diluents, brushes, supports (canvas or canvas panel) and so one. A complete list will be sent to you beforehand. This lesson will follow Colour s, so you would have a good idea about your materials and some basic workings. Basic Techniques explained and demonstrated (Live) Discussion of projects and forwarding of photographs and images. These you will need to draw onto your canvas for your next session. Purpose: Learning to underpaint your canvas Colour Mixing (Live): Mixing your colours needs to be precise. It can take up to an hour just to get all the correct tones and hues onto your palette. I regard the palette as a learning platform, and it is a brilliant accessory for proper planning. You will receive a file displaying all the correct colours. Underpainting (Live): Learn to underpaint. Applying colours (Live): Learn HOW to apply paint, what thickness and direction to use.

5 Blending (Live): The Nemesis of many will be dealt with Purpose: Learn to paint and add values through underpainting. Drawing Preparation and underpainting values of the image. Colour Mixing (Live) Painting (Live): You need to learn to top coat the whole painting as to leave some important underpainting exposed for an optimal effect. This will involve some practice and different brush holding techniques. Blending (Live): Only where necessary. Purpose: Painting directly onto canvas without an undercoat. More advanced but very enjoyable to simply lay colour onto your canvas. Drawing Colour Mixing (Live): Of course, you need much more experience to mix paints on your canvas, and even then, it usually isn t the best choice, so colour planning is essential. Painting (Live) Blending and finishing touches. Purpose: Learn to work with texture an Impasto (thick paint) Materials: Added Materials like gesso, papers and ingredients can be added to create a lively and interesting surface quality for an art work. Canvas Preparation (Live): Oil needs to be applied in certain ways with other mediums, that you can learn from me. Colour Mixing: (Live) Painting (Live) Purpose: Oil can be placed onto an oil based wet surface for quick effective results. Materials: Certain diluents will be added Drawing (Live) Colour Mixing (Live): Preparation of canvas (Live): The support is wetted with an oil mix, that allows oils to be smeared onto the canvas. Painting and blending(live) Purpose: Learn to use a layered effect of thinned-out paint to create an artwork that reveals the layers underneath. Drawing (Live) Preparation of support Paint in stages (Live) Finishing (Live) Purpose: To paint with a palette knife. Drawing and Colour Mixing (Live) Painting (Live): Palette knife allows for almost no mistakes, and besides its chocolate box reputation it can actually deliver some spectacular effects. But you need to learn not to overwork it. A base layer is sometimes required for easier application. Corrections and Finishing Touches

6 9 Purpose: Teaching you to play with oils. Different wet on wet and wet on dry methods are used in this lesson. Colour mixing (Live): Materials: Additional materials are required like charcoal or soft pastels. Drawing (Live): A different looser and intuitive drawing style is required. Painting (Live) Corrections and finishing touches. So that concludes most oil paint techniques. By now you will have a grand understanding of methodology, process, technique and knowledge of colour, colour combinations and general construction of oil paints. Out of these lessons you will also have a good idea of what you like most and then we can follow your preferred techniques with your own source materials.
