1 A t t a c h m e n t s a r e a 117 Bolt Hill Road, Eliot Maine (207) For more information visit our website at or us at info@sanctuaryarts.org! WINTER 2019 Art Class & Workshop Schedule Drawing, Painting, Monoprinting, Egg Tempera Indigo Dyeing, Asian Brush Painting SA 1 CEZANNE TO DIEBENKORN Tom Glover, 10 Weeks Monday 9 12 February 4 April 8 Starting at the end of the 19th century with Cezanne and his tilting planes; through Picasso/Braque and cubism; to the austere paintings of Diebenkorn and the photo collages of Hockney, we will explore abstract art. Various formal structures will be discussed and we will apply ideas and techniques of many different abstract painters to see how they achieved their creations. We will learn about processes and modes of thought that help lead to the development of abstract paintings. Oil and acrylic suggested, but gouache, watercolor, collage, and mixed media are also acceptable. Experimentation will be the emphasis. There is no right or wrong, so be daring! Also would recommend bringing more than one substrate to work on. Canvas board is fine, or canvas, or gessoed hardboard. SA 2 BUILDING DRAWING SKILLS Carol Morley, 8 Weeks Monday, 1-4 February 4 March 25 Tuition $290 Copy Fee $4 Students will learn the fundamentals of representational drawing in a relaxed atmosphere. The course will cover contour drawing, perspective, composition and mastering tonal values through the observation of still life forms. We will then experiment with drawing techniques, explore visual vocabulary and the expression of creative ideas in still life, landscape and portraits. This is a fun and supportive class that will give you a chance to try out new ideas and develop your own unique way of drawing. Your personal drawings can be of any subject. SA 3 WINTER WONDERLAND Tom Glover, 10 Weeks Monday 6 9 February 4 April 8 When this class starts we will be knee deep in the white stuff! Observational skills will be put to the test as we explore the effects of snow on the landscape. Several major artists will be referenced to help give us clues in observing snow: its effects on water, buildings, the ocean, trees, fields, streets and so on. Please be photographing as we will not be tramping around outside, but will have to rely on photographs to help catapult our imaginations into capturing snow and all of its colors and textures. Oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolor accepted. Students will be encouraged to work on more than one image in class. We will talk about formal aspects of painting color mixing, composing, wet-on-wet techniques; scumbling, glazing, washes and so on. Beginners welcome!
2 SA 4 MEDITATIONS IN INK; Introduction to Asian Brush Painting Bruce Ivereson, 10 Weeks Tuesday 9 12 February 5 April 9 Materials $25 For three thousand years, the Asian cultures of China, Korea, and Japan have expressed their love of nature with simple, yet, refined tools...brush, ink, inkstone, and rice paper. This class is for those interested in learning and using the traditional tools and techniques of Asian Brush Painting ("sumi-e" in Japan). Through step -by- step instructor demonstrations and hands-on brush painting projects using the "Four Treasures" (bamboo brushes, handground ink, inkstone, and rice paper), you will explore this ancient and elegant art and leave class with two completed projects. Subjects for this ten week session will be Bamboo and Plum Blossom (Cherry) in ink and color and an exploration of the nature of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy. NO ART EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. SA 5 WATERCOLOR & DRAWING Russel Whitten, 10 Weeks Tuesday 2 5 February 5 April 9 This class will provide training in the direct observation of form and its surrounding elements. The emphasize will be on controlling watercolor media to re-creating the appearance of nature with use of surrounding forms. The development of forms as derived from the study of perspective, composition, value and color will play as the foundation for this class. SA 6 CLASSICAL STILL LIFE TECHNIQUES Sydney Sparrow, 10 Weeks Wednesday 10 1 February 6 April 10 The aim of this class will be to finish highly realized still life paintings, beginning with composition, set-up, and color mixing, to rendering detail in final layers. Students will be walked through the process of creating line drawings, which will be transferred to painting surfaces. In studying value and form, we will then complete monochromatic underpaintings. In further layers of paint, we'll talk about and address palette, hue and chroma control, and creating texture and surface detail. We'll spend time talking about the tradition of still life painting, and look at artists throughout history as example and inspiration. SA 7 DRAWING THE FIGURE Sydney Sparrow, 10 Weeks Wednesday 2-5 February 6 April 10 Model Fee $90 This class is an opportunity for students to draw the figure from life over the course of ten weeks. We will work on several poses throughout the semester, starting each with a linear block-in and move forward to a finished, 3-dimensional figure with full values and form. We will discuss and employ topics including gesture, proportion, comparative measurement, and building volume. We'll work together through each step of the drawing via demos, problem-solving, and discussion. The focus will be to create figure drawings that demonstrate both anatomical accuracy and sensitivity to line work and composition.
3 SA 8 CONTEMPLATIVE ART PRACTICES Sean Kramer, 10 Weeks Wenesday 6-9 February 6 April 10 Materials $35 SA 9 BASIC TECHNIQUES OF EGG TEMPERA PANEL PAINTING Sean Kramer, 10 Weeks Thursday 9-12 February 7 April 11 Materials Fee $90 SA 10 WATERCOLOR BLISS IN THE GREENHOUSE Pat Hardy, 4 Weeks Thursday 10 1 January 17 February 7 Tuition $200 The sessions of this workshop will be pleasantly spent mediating and doing art meditatively. We will begin each class working with our body, breath and mind. Then we will try a variety of contemplative art practices: mandalas and yantras, spontaneous and intuitive art making, working with symbols, drawing our journey, surrealist techniques, and more. The emphasis will be on the process, art as a meditative practice, letting go of the inner critic. In this course you will learn painting techniques originating with the Egyptians, practiced throughout the Middle Ages, and continued into the present. Learn how to prepare panels using 'true gesso' made from marble dust and chalk. Make your own paints from earths, semiprecious stones and modern pigments. Learn a number of methods for using gold leaf and other kinds of metal leaf in paintings. Multiple techniques of applying egg-tempera will be taught: dry brush, petite lac, glazing and scumbling.
