2 BUTLER NORTH - Youngstown: Butler North (formerly known as the First Christian Church) houses the Dennison Education Center, the home of the Butler s education department. Butler North is located next to the Butler Institute on the corner of Wick Avenue and University Plaza. Thanks to the generosity of the Dennison family, this beautiful facility is the site for Butler classes, lectures and private lessons. INCREASE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ART HISTORY Join Butler docents in the Zona auditorium for a Film on Art program that focuses upon art history. Lectures as well as video from the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. will cover American and European painting, as well as a variety of other art forms. This series is held on Tuesdays at noon. Contact Richard Adler , ext for program information. PLEASE NOTE Class size is limited. Classes are filled on a first come first served basis. Sessions that do not fill will be cancelled or combined. No written confirmation will be mailed. If you do not hear from us, your enrollment is ensured. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships based on need are available on a limited basis for children s classes at our Youngstown and Trumbull Butler locations. Please direct written requests to the Butler Education Department in Youngstown and include a recommendation from the student s art teacher. CREATE YOUR OWN COMIC BOOK AND MANGA STYLE CARTOONING Create your own action adventure comic book telling your own story and creating exciting characters and settings. Traditional cartooning as well as the Manga style will be explained. Students will learn how to plot out their own storyline and create interesting characters in comic book form like the pros! This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. The tunnel book was developed in the 19th. Century as a threedimensional souvenir used to document and recreate for the viewer, important places and historical events. These books have become popular with children s authors and illustrators. Students will create a simple version of these interesting books. Saturdays-4 weeks-february 17, 24, March 3, 10 #004-Grades :00-11:00 a.m. #005-Grades :30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. DECORATIVE NATIVE AMERICAN CLAY CREST HATS Traditional art forms created by Native Americans are among the oldest in North America. Using air-dry clay, students will employ the hand-building techniques of pinch, coil, and slab construction to create their own decorative crest hat. Animal and folk imagery will be incorporated. Saturdays-4 weeks-february 17, 24, March 3, 10 #006-Grades 5-8 2:00-3:00 p.m. CLAY FOREST DWELLINGS (Homeschool) Using air-dry clay, learn or practice your basic hand-building techniques of pinch, coil, and slab, while constructing a house and an imaginary forest creature to live there. Experiment with light, color, and form in the creation of these unusual sculptures. 4 TEEN/ADULT CLASSES - YOUNGSTOWN-BUTLER NORTH (cont.) BASIC PENCIL DRAWING Explore subject matter, contouring, shade, layout, basic perspective, and light source. Students will learn different techniques of recognizing shape and form to transition to their drawing as well as tools to help them learn basic drawing skills. Students should bring several 8 x 10 black and white photo references of their favorite subject to draw. This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Supplies will be discussed in first class.) Wednesdays-5 weeks-february 21, 28, March 7, 14, 21 #A10-Adult 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesdays-5 weeks-march 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25 #A11-Adult 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesdays-5 weeks-may 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 #A12-Adult 6:00-8:00 p.m. PERSPECTIVE MADE EASY FOR TEENS Examine the purpose and importance of perspective drawing in your artwork. Students will learn depth, horizon line and vertical line along with placement of objects in relation to eye recognition. This class will help students achieve more realistic pieces of artwork in any media. Students should bring several 8 x 10 black and white photo references of scenes with objects and buildings they would enjoy drawing. This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Supplies will be discussed in first class.) Thursdays-5 weeks-february 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15 #A13-Ages :00-5:30 p.m. PEN AND INK Students will learn to finish their pencil drawing and sketches in pen and ink using various techniques and materials. Explore light source, shading, and perspective of objects. Finished art will be ready for reproduction (greeting cards, notes, business cards, etc.) This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Supplies will be discussed in first class.) Thursdays-5 weeks-february 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15 #A14-Adult 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursdays-5 weeks-march 22, April 5, 12, 19, 26 #A15-Adult 6:00-8:00 p.m. BRINGING REALITY TO CANVAS (ALL LEVELS) This painting class will provide students of all skill levels time to work at their own pace while creating an oil painting from a photographic source. This class may be repeated. Students are asked to bring a 5 x 7 photo for use on an 11 x 14 prestretched canvas. (Ambitious students may try larger surfaces-i.e. 8 x 10 photo with a 16 x 20 canvas but must provide their own canvas.) Although reference photos that you have taken are preferred, it is a good idea to have several different photos with you at the start. In some cases you may like a different sky, or trees or just want to combine several to make an image more unique or personal. In many cases, choosing a photo with larger shapes and good contrast from light to dark may be easier to translate. All supplies for painting in oils will be provided. Students wishing to work in acrylics may bring their own paints and instruction will be provided as well. Supply fee is waived if students have their own supplies. Previous students can use time in class to complete any earlier oil paintings and begin a new work. Bring along a few references to paint that are clear so detail can be seen. Teacher will be available for suggestions and assistance. For beginning painters, make sure your references are not overly complicated. Basic skills using tube acrylic painting will be explored: color mixing, blending, shading, and light source. Basic drawing and layout skills will also be taught while students explore composition of their project before painting actual piece of artwork. An informative class of this widely used media!
