1 Certificate in Botanical Art & Illustration Fall 2018 Class Listing Botany Olivia Lenahan, Horticultural Scientist Saturdays, August 4, 11, 18, and 25 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. This course is introductory in nature and designed for a broad audience. It covers basic principles of botany including taxonomy, anatomy, morphology and physiology. Class time is divided between lectures and examining/dissecting samples. There are also opportunities for making observations in the gardens. There will be a half-hour break for lunch during each session. $195 ($175 Members) Beginning Drawing Tuesdays, August 7, 14, 21, and 28 An introductory level course of drawing for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills. Includes using a sketchbook for line drawing exercises on seeing to draw, quick sketching, mapping for accuracy, and other basic principles of drawing. No prerequisites. $150 ($135 Members) Intermediate Colored Pencil Kate Lagaly, Professional Artist Wednesdays, August 8, 15, 22, and 29 This course adds to the information covered in Beginning Colored Pencil and hones skills in color, value and layering. Students will be introduced to new surfaces and techniques. This elective is intended for students who wish to develop a strong, more advanced-level skill in colored pencil. Prerequisites: Beginning Colored Pencil, Intermediate Drawing. $150 ($135 Members) Introduction to Botanical Art & Illustration Linda Koffenberger, Professional Artist Saturday, August 25 This class explores the history of botanical illustration, shows examples of various types of botanical illustrations and botanical art, describes the coursework for the Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration, and introduces the instructors. $38 ($34 Members)
2 Plant Taxonomy Milo Pyne, Plant Ecologist Fridays, September 7, 14, and p.m. This course builds on the fundamentals taught in Botany and prepares students for supplementary material covered in Flowering Plant Families. It is a core course for students enrolled in either of the NCBG certificate programs. Students learn the basic concepts of the taxonomy of vascular plants and how to identify plant families by making observations of selected characteristics. The use of taxonomic keys is introduced. Interesting examples are studied to illustrate current issues in plant taxonomy and nomenclature. Prerequisite: Botany. $130 ($117 Members) Beginning Watercolor Thursdays, September 13, 20, 27, and October 4 In this class, students are introduced to watercolor and learn basics techniques such as flat and graded washes. Students learn to paint various simple shapes (spheres and cylinders) and a small botanical subject. Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing. $150 ($135 Members) Intermediate Drawing Patricia Savage, Professional Artist Sundays, September 23, 30, October 14, and 21 (Skips October 7) 1:15-4:45 p.m. In this class, students continue their journey to learn the skills needed to produce a clean, accurate pencil drawing. Specifics of the course include: measuring, ellipses in perspective, and tonal gradation. Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing. $150 ($135 Members) Fall Flora Amanda Faucette, NCBG Conservation Botanist Saturdays, October 13, 20, 27, and November 3 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. This course is intended for a broad audience. Field trips and exercises provide experience in the use of identification keys and recognition of plants in a natural setting. Upon completion of this course, students will have an understanding of basic plant morphology, naming conventions for plants and the history of scientific naming, how to identify the prominent plants of the season using a dichotomous key and field characteristics, all through a season-specific lens. No prerequisites. $130 ($117 Members)
3 Field Sketching Tuesdays, October 23, 30, November 6, 13 Take your sketchbook outdoors and reconnect with plants in their natural environment. In this course, students are encouraged to shed old habits and try new techniques as they travel to a variety of gardens and habitats. Through a combination of guided exercises and free experimentation, students discover new ways of seeing plants, new problem-solving skills, and a refreshing way of thinking about layout and color. Several media are used, from ballpoint pen to watercolor to pencil. No prerequisite. $150 ($135 Members) Intermediate Expressive Watercolor Kate Lagaly, Professional Artist Wednesdays, October 24, 31, November 7, 14 This course builds upon the knowledge and skills of Beginning Watercolor and provides instruction based on a fluid watercolor style combined with careful observation of plants. Learn techniques and methods to create form, values, details, textures as well as backgrounds. Prerequisites: Beginning Watercolor, Intermediate Drawing. $150 ($135 Members) Pen and Ink Thursdays, November 8, 15, 29, and December 6 (Skips November 22) In this class, students learn to draw with pen and ink using standard techniques and conventions. Students work with both old-fashioned dip pens and modern technical pens to create accurate botanical drawings. Prerequisite: Intermediate Drawing. $150 ($135 Members) Advanced Traditional Watercolor Tuesdays, November 20, 27, December 4, 11 This course builds upon Intermediate Traditional Watercolor. Students independently select a native plant of their choice and design and complete a watercolor painting displaying different aspects of that plant. Instructor is available for consultation and problem solving, as well as in-class critiques. Students prepare a written analysis of their work explaining their design choices and a report describing the botanical details of their selected plant. Prerequisites: Intermediate Traditional Watercolor, Integrating Composition and Color Theory. $150 ($135 Members)
4 NON-CREDIT COURSES Drawing for People Who Think They Can t Draw Saturday, August 4 Drawing is a skill anyone can learn! In this workshop, students progress from a blank sheet of paper to a beautifully finished drawing. Come try, and discover that yes, you can draw! $42 ($38 Members) Nature Journaling in the Garden Jane Eckenrode, Professional Artist Saturday, September 15 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Develop your nature journaling skills, whether you are just getting started, want to add visual notes to a written journal, or simply enjoy drawing what you see. Through guided exercises, we ll practice perceptual and drawing skills to quickly establish a framework for a diagram, drawing, or description in your journal, then experiment with portable drawing and painting media. We ll also look at strategies for organizing your journal for outdoor excursions. All skill levels are welcome! Come dressed to venture outside. Bring your favorite journal and tools or refer to the provided materials list. $36 ($32 Members) Copperplate Calligraphy Jessica Yee, Calligrapher and Engraver Wednesdays, September 19, 26, October 3, 10 1:30-4:30 p.m. Calligraphy means beautiful writing. Calligraphers use a number of different families of letter forms, or hands. One of these hands, copperplate, is traditionally used in botanical illustration to identify the subject of the illustration. This four-session course introduces the basics of copperplate. Students learn how to make letterforms using the correct stroke sequence for lower and upper case letters with dip-pen in ink and watercolor paint. Proficiency will require practice beyond the scope of this course. No prerequisites. $144 ($130 Members) Graduation Preparation Patricia Savage, Professional Artist Sundays October 28 and November 11 1:15-4:45 p.m. Students receive guidance on Independent Projects, graduation procedures and requirements, as well as organizing the exhibit, photographing and framing their paintings, and an introduction to marketing their work. $76 ($68 Members)
