1 Street Cafés & City Landscapes in Watercolour with Lea Nixon SATURDAY 3 rd MARCH Lea Nixon Lea comes from the town of Wigan and loves the history of his local town where he began as a school teacher in Art and Music. Lea s teaching experience has taught him how to convey the painting skills he has himself, to his own students today. The process doesn t have to be complicated, but what I like to do is teach the essential elements and then work with the student to develop a personal style of their own. Lea has exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London in the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters and the New English Art Club (NEAC). Washes, colour, brush strokes, tone and hard and soft edges are the fundamentals of watercolour painting. I will start with small exercises to help us understand the essential techniques in order to achieve loose and fresh watercolours. However, each artist s personal style is the most important and I hope to help everyone improve and develop theirs! Good quality watercolours: My preferred colours are Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Neutral tint, Alizarin Crimson and Cadmium Red. I also use white gouache for highlights and special effects. All colours are not essential Brushes: Large mop, a synthetic size 10 or 12 round and a small sword liner Good quality paper is important and I use a rough surface. 2 Ink, Wax and Watercolour with Irene Merrall FRIDAY 9 th MARCH 1.30pm-4.00pm 20 Irene Merrall I have loved drawing ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil. I studied art up to A level at school and then, much later, when I trained to be a teacher, art was part of my degree course. Since I retired from teaching I have had much more time to draw, paint and experiment. I enjoy painting all types of subjects in oil, acrylic, watercolour and ink. Much of my work when I was at school was in ink and now I really like combining that with the wax resist and watercolour washes - the end result is often a surprise! I will do some short exercises to teach you the technique and then be on hand to give any help you need for your creation! I will bring some photographic images to work from but welcome anyone bringing their own. What to Bring Fine line fibre tip and/ or rollerball pens (black ink). If the ink runs when washed with watercolour it will create a different effect from the ink that doesn't run. We will work with what you have. Good quality watercolour paper (I prefer Bockingford) - enough for your picture and practice exercises. Soft pencil and putty rubber Wax crayons - the kind that children use are fine. A variety of colours. 3 Mixed Media Flowers with Fiona Payne SATURDAY 10 th MARCH Fiona Payne Fiona is a local artist and tutor. Her workshops have been delivered to schools, College students as well as many adults at seminars, classes and demonstrations. Designed for all abilities, but especially for anyone who wants to loosen up and free their creativity!! We will experiment with a variety of unusual pieces of equipment together with wax, watercolour, inks and pastel to produce large, free and spontaneous works of art. We shall create two finished pieces simultaneously throughout the day. Watercolour paints At least 3 Acrylic ink colours (Prussian Blue, Yellow Ochre and Orange are the best) Large paper of a very good quality for final pieces (we shall aim to finish 2) Spare sketching paper A3 Black fine liners or felt pens White wax crayon or wax candle Soft coloured pastels Cling Film Table Salt All water pots, table easels, drawing boards & hair dryers Tea/Coffee/Biscuits Fiona will provide A1 300grsm cartridge paper which can be purchased at 1 per sheet on the day, plus all the other bits and pieces that are required. Inks can also be purchased from Fiona on the day at a price of 4 per bottle/colour. Just be warned it will get messy. Old clothes or an apron are a must!!!!! 3

4 Snowdonia s Mountains in Watercolour with David Bellamy (NEW TUTOR) SATURDAY 17 th MARCH David Bellamy David Bellamy specialises in painting mountain and wild coastal scenes and is particularly fascinated by the moods of nature in the wild places. A full time artist and author, he has written seventeen books illustrated with his paintings and eight dvd s on his own techniques in watercolour. Through his painting and writing he hopes to bring about a greater awareness of the threats to the natural environment, and he is particularly active in conserving the wild areas. The workshop is ideal for all artists from beginners to the more experienced. David will start the workshop with a demonstration showing some of his watercolour techniques. You can choose to use the subject of the demonstration, bring your own photographs or use one of David s. Preferably 200lb which is less likely to cockle. Bockingford 200lb is a good paper. 5 Sketching with Pencil & Pen with John Frith FRIDAY 23 rd MARCH am-4.00pm 20 John Frith I'm mainly a Pen & Wash Watercolour artist, and I enjoy painting out in the great outdoors, because I love it when people come up for a chat! I use Pen & Wash / Watercolour because it's so transportable, you don't need to take lots of art materials around with you. When painting outdoors, I just take sketch book, a waterproof pen, a few watercolour paints, a brush or two, and a small bottle of water. One of my great satisfactions is running workshops. I find it very rewarding to pass my skills and knowhow on to others. I like my workshops to be warm and welcoming, light-hearted and informative. The workshop Sketching is great fun, and can be done almost anywhere, whether at home, on a day out, or away on holiday. Photos are fine, but they're not half as interesting as your own sketches! You don't need to take a lot of art stuff with you. I just take a small sketchbook, a pencil, and a drawing pen. Sometimes (but not always) I also take a very small watercolour palette and a small brush. My sketches remain in my book, usually with a brief description (i.e. where it is, what it was like, did I have a nice cup of tea! etc). They are great to look back on, and recapture the atmosphere of the place. Sometimes, but not often, I add a bit of colour to them. Sometimes I use them as reference material for a full watercolour painting. Sketches should be quick, relaxed and very loose. They're not formal at all. I ll demonstrate how I make quick sketches of places, people, animals etc This workshop is for adults of any ability (including beginners, improvers and experienced). Soft pencils A permanent ink pen (I'll have pens available to buy for 2 each). 6 Dramatic Effects in Black & White Acrylic with John Connolly SATURDAY 24 th MARCH John Connolly John trained as an Art teacher at Doncaster and in Drama at Derby University. After teaching Art and Drama for several years, John became founder member and artistic director of Compact Theatre Company and acted professionally (as Harry Connolly) since John divides his time between painting, acting and writing (with a bias towards painting since In 2010 John became a full time artist working in his own studio, the Ormscliffe studio, in Bolsover. John's workshops are suitable for both the beginner and experienced artist wishing to explore new ideas and techniques. Students will be encouraged to loosen up and use a variety of materials and techniques working in a very impressionistic style. Selection of brushes, including large flat ones. Large Mixing palette Don t go out and buy anything special, plastic dinner trays, plates or old plastic chopping boards are brilliant!! Acrylic paint colours needed. - Titanium White, Grey, Black Acrylic inks are optional, sometimes used to get a different effect to paint. (John is unable to supply white ink, if you wish to use it, a small bottle costs around 4-5). Canvas - Size would ideally be 16 x 20 inches or 20 x 20 inches (no smaller). John will provide other materials such as sand, tissue paper etc to create textures.
