1 Photography: Session B Instructor: Louis Heilbronn TA: Gaby Course Objective: This course will provide students with a basic technical foundation in digital photography as well as an understanding of the language of photography within the context of art. Class lectures will survey some of the medium s most established approaches and trends from its invention to today. Assignments will focus on the landscape photograph, the portrait, the staged narrative, the diary Grading (Pass/ Fail) - Attendance and participation - %60 - Assignments - %30 - Final Exhibition - %30 Required Materials - Digital Camera Camera must be a digital SLR (DSLR) that can shoot RAW files. It must have manual control of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed - Memory card any brand is fine (make sure it is the correct type for your camera that has a minimum capacity of 8GB - Portable External Hard Drive any brand but must be mack compatible. STUDIO: Photography in the Sculpture Garden with natural light. (pictures should display range of photographic genres lectured in class 8 Prints) 2

Get ready to talk about their relationship to one another. 1:15 Meet at Broad Lawn to prepare for Museum Trip 1:15 4:00 Museum Trip to Getty Center (all students attend) - Assignment Shoot Museum Pictures (Think about Thomas Struth and Candida Hoffer) 4:00 5:30 Return from Getty, complete Museum Assignment in studio Get into groups and think about ideas for staged photographs. Take turns making and participating in the creation of the picture. Friday 7/27 9:00 12:00 LECTURE: The Staged Photograph/ Social Documentary Photography 12:00 1:15 Lunch 1:15 4:15 Execute idea for staged photograph 4:15 4:30 Snack Break is later than usual today 4:30 5:30 Art Movie Screening in Auditorium (all students attend in BROAD 2160E) Shoot over weekend thinking about documenting your experiences in relationship to narrative. Prepare for critique on Monday 10 photographs, including group pictures. We will be looking at the staged photographs as well as the documentary images made over the weekend. 3

Walk through the exhibition and start thinking about what you want to do for your final assignment. Take notes and try to find relatable material. Instructors and TAs will help students pack-up their artworks and will facilitate the shipping process. 5
