1 Syllabus: Watercolor Workshop: Observational + Still Life Painting CE 1602 N Summer 2017 Continuing Education Course Information Location: TBA Dates: Thursdays, JUN 8 JUL 6, 6-9PM Instructor Information Name: Leanne Grimes Policy: Instructor Bio: Leanne Grimes is a contemporary artist who explores the formal elements of painting through the landscape and personal narrative. Her work is based on intense interactions of color, pattern, and texture. She enjoys teaching students how to master their relationship with color, and how to discover their personal styles in paint. Leanne is currently working on large scale landscape paintings in her studio in Old City. Course Description This workshop shares the tips, tools, and secrets for successful watercolor painting. Gain a familiarity with the properties of the watercolor medium as you explore various approaches to painting still life set ups. A variety of styles and approaches are demonstrated and discussed, including color selection, painting wet into wet, glazing and washes. Get the tools to paint with confidence through this mix of demonstrations, and in-class painting exercises. Pre-requisites None all levels of experience welcome. Course Overview Students will learn about the immediacy and fluidity of this approachable medium. Watercolor is an excellent bridge between painting and drawing. You will develop your observational skills by working from still life setups. The goal is not to reproduce what you see, but rather, to translate it into vibrant shapes and colors. You will learn how to embrace the beauty of the transparent pigments, as well as how to intuit the unpredictable nature of this medium. Course Objectives/Learning Objectives At the end of this course, students will know: - How to translate what you are seeing into expressive watercolor paintings - How to control the fluidity of this beautiful medium #UArtsCE

2 - Various watercolor painting techniques and effects, including washes, wet-into-wet, drybrush, masking, and layering - Contemporary and historical artists who use this medium, and see how and why they use it - Color, composition, and work to discover your personal style Course Resources Textbooks (s) Optional Tate Watercolor Manual For tutorials and additional help it is recommended to visit Lynda.com or Adobe.com for video tutorials. These tutorials are free and/or low cost. You will be able to access Lynda.com for free using your UArts login. Additional Course Materials Supplies Please see the downloadable supplies list on the CE website by the course description page. Watercolor sets can range widely in price. This is due to the quality of pigments. I will suggest a few brands according to your experience and budget. You will also notice that watercolor sets come in tubes vs. pans. If you are a beginner, I recommend starting with the tube sets, because you can learn how to control the concentration of pigments. Beginners You can get a good beginner set from Reeve s, a pack with 12 colors is under $15. Intermediate If you have some experience with watercolor and would like a moderately priced artist grade set of watercolors, I suggest Winsor & Newton (around $100/set). Experienced If you have it in your budget, and you really want to splurge, the best brand out there is Schmincke (12 pan set is $140). Paper can also vary in price dramatically! You can buy individual sheets, pads, or blocs. I like watercolor blocks the best because it saves a step from stretching the paper. Strathmore is a good brand for a decent price. The best paper is from Arches. Another thing to keep in mind Cold Press Vs. Hot Press. This is related to the texture of the paper!! If you want a smooth surface to work on choose Hot Press. If you like the textured surface of watercolor paper, go for Cold Press! Brushes 2

3 Watercolor brushes are usually soft-bristled. For budget purposes, I would find a pack of brushes, with a variety of shapes and sizes. It is good to have at least one large brush for washes, as well as a smaller brush for fine detail. Additional Supplies Light 2H pencil for sketching Small Sketchbook for notes and compositional planning Sponge Plastic Palette if using tube sets Course Policies Student Feedback/Communication If you experience an emergency, which will prevent you from completing required coursework on time, please communicate with the instructor at the earliest opportunity. Please state the nature of the emergency and when you expect to turn in the coursework. Submitting Electronic Files All electronic files must be submitted in.pdf format unless otherwise noted. Please name your file in the using the following convention: Project Name_First InitialLast Name. Thus, if my name where John Smith and I was submitting the Narrative PowerPoint assignment, I would rename the NarrativePowerPoint.pdf file as NarativePowerPoint_JSmith. Attendance + Participation All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness or absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. *Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. Students taking the course for credit will receive a letter grade based on the following criteria: Component Examples of Components Points Technical Proficiency Projects, Quizzes, Exercises 40% Participation (incl Responses) Class Discussions, 25% Artist Presentations Critiques, Peer Feedback, Concepts 15% Deadlines & Following Instructions completion and content, Readings 20% Total 100% 4

5 Projects will be graded in the following categories: Visual Appeal, concept, development, and presentation. Schedule* SESSION + TOPIC COURSEWORK DUE DATE Introduction lecture, videos, overview of supplies Session 1 In-Class work begin with basic paint handling and color mixing observational still-life collage with color match swatches Session 2 lecture, videos, overview of watercolor techniques creating texture with watercolor paint texture collages Session 3 lecture, videos, overview of composition thumbnails, gesture studies create at least 4 small sketches exploring composition Session 4 lecture, videos, overview of color theory learning how to layer, expressive vs naturalistic color with at least two different paintings explore the various uses of color Session 5 Critique lecture, videos, bringing it all together please bring all of your paintings final still life set up 5
