2 Drawing for All Course Description: Drawing is first and foremost about learning to see. Most people look but don t necessarily see. This course aims to help you to learn to do this. Emphasis will be placed on the idea that drawing is an exercise in seeing, giving focus to the techniques of observation. The course also gives you guidelines, techniques and a good basic knowledge to enable you to establish your ability to draw.exercises will begin with just the observation of simple objects and then build gradually towards highly complex subjects. You ll experiment with different media such as pen, pencil and charcoal to achieve a variety of results. Geared for beginners but open to all skill levels. Learning Objectives and Outcomes: Develop the ability to perceive and measure spatial relationships. Draw geometric and organic shapes in space. Understand contrast in tone and texture. Understand how light describes form and space. Become familiar with the visual elements of drawing(line, shape, value, texture, scale, space, etc.) Understand the importance of composition, organization, placement and positive and negative space. Describe form through correct proportion. Understand and use linear perspective and other spatial systems. Understand and use the vocabulary of drawing. Be exposed to a variety of approaches to drawing, (style, technique, media). Concerning the projects: Each project will include a research component and the student will be expected to read and/or find images (e.g. find photos with textures from nature ) around the given subject. The tutor will present demonstrations where necessary. Students MUST bring the correct materials and must draw in class, although you will of course be required to finish at home what you can t finish in class. The technical component, stipulated in every project sheet, will tell you how to go about DOING the project, for example: the size of the paper, the exact materials to use, where to obtain your references etc.

3 PROJECT 1: Introduction to Drawing (pencil and charcoal) At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to observe and draw various objects in pencil or charcoal. Students will do various exercises on - observing the limits of the paper, proportions and basic rules of composition, practice shading, hatching, crosshatching, understand the meanings of sketch and study. The tutor will explain and demonstrate the techniques. There will be presented also examples from art history. There will be all the time homework. The student is expected to not limit the experience to the exercises in class but continue to practice at home every day otherwise it will be no progress. A3 paper or sketchbook + a proper folder for keeping and carrying it* Soft pencils (B, 2B, 3B 9B) Soft, white eraser (BIC, MILAN, Cretacolor etc.) 1 roll of masking tape *please note that the sheets of paper should be kept neat (not folded, creased, crinkled, crimped, or spotted with liquids, oils, creams or food before and after the class) paper (the limits of the paper will have to be observed). For the final study there will be also preparatory sketches. The last 2 sessions will be allocated for a study, more or less complex, according to the student skills showed in previous lessons regarding observation, pagination, observation of proportions, construction, shading etc.) Duration: 6 sessions

4 PROJECT 2: Observe Nature At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to observe and draw shapes, construction, proportions, expression, structures and textures of plants, shells, animals, birds, fish, insects etc. Nature is a great source of inspiration for artists, architects, designers etc. The subject can be approached in various ways: artistic, geometric or with a specific purpose (e.g. explore shapes, structures and functions in nature for a bionic design / a system or design found in nature). Students will also be introduced to observing the golden section in nature. There will be an image lecture of history of art and architecture examples. The drawings (sketches, studies or interpretations) will be made using photos or 3d structures/objects derived from nature. The student is expected to not limit the experience to the exercises in class, but to explore different subjects and to also draw at home. The drawings will be done on A3 paper attached to a vertical placed board or on a horizontal surface depending on the purpose or technique of the drawing. The technique will be dictated by the student s skill level and choice: pencil, charcoal or ink. A3 paper or sketchbook + a proper folder for keeping and carrying it* Soft pencils (B, 2B, 3B 9B), graphite etc.** Soft, white eraser (BIC, MILAN, Cretacolor etc.) 1 roll of masking tape *please observe that the sheets of paper should be kept neat (not folded, creased, crinkled, crimped, or spotted with liquids, oils, creams or food before and after the class) paper (the limits of the paper will have to be observed). For the final study there will be also preparatory sketches. The last 2 sessions will be allocated for a study, more or less complex, according to the student skills and/or purpose/aim/project. Duration: 6 sessions

5 PROJECT 3: Portrait At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to observe and draw the human portrait with correctly drawn facial components and proportions. Students will be able to apply their understanding of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Composition to organize their own artwork. Students will be introduced to drawings made by great artists. The course will include an explanation of the anatomy and proportions of the face with practice doing preparatory sketches of faces. For the advanced students the sketches will be followed by one study of a chosen subject. The drawings (sketches, studies or interpretations) will be made using copies of artist s sketches and photos. The variety of shapes and volumes will be also observed from anthropology studies. The student is expected to not limit the experience to the exercises in class, but to also draw at home. 6 PROJECT 4: Human Body At the completion of this assignment, the student will be familiar with the following aspects of drawing the human form: how to construct the figure, proportions and expression in static and dynamic positions. The tutor will illustrate the technical and expressive aspects of life drawing by showing examples of the work of Great Master artists. The students will make a lot of sketches of features along with whole body construction from various angles. For the advanced students the sketches will be followed by one study of a chosen subject. The drawings (sketches, studies or interpretations) will be made using copies of artist s sketches and photos. The variety of shapes and volumes will be also observed from anthropology studies. The student is expected to not limit the experience to the exercises in class, but to also draw at home. 7 PROJECT 5: Still life At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to draw a still life composition that will include various volumes, shapes and materials. The properties of light and the principles of drawing objects using various light sources, volume, and surface quality (matt, shiny, raff, smooth, textured, coloured) will be discussed. Reflections on and refractions through specific materials will be explored. The tutor will explain and demonstrate various techniques dealing with foreshortening, perspective, accurate measurements and reverse drawing. The student is expected to practice methods for accurate sight drawings from still life set-ups to express line, weight, values, and mass. The student is expected to not limit the experience to the exercises in class but, to practice at home. 8 PROJECT 6: Landscape At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to draw a landscape composition. The class topics include composition, line, value, volume, negative space, directional forces, perspective and proportion. The student is expected to not limit the experience to the exercises in class, but to also practice at home.
