1 AP Studio Art Syllabi: Drawing and 2 D Design Course Description: Through studio practice, application of design concepts, and informed decision making, students will assemble a body of artwork that demonstrates a high level of quality and growth over time of content, technique, and process. Students will develop mastery in concept, composition, and execution. Students will address three components in their portfolios: Quality, Concentration, and Breadth. Students will submit this body of work to the teacher and, if applicable, to the College Board for grading and possible college credit. Artistic Integrity: Students are expected to use artistic integrity throughout the course. Work that is based on Published photographs or the work of other artists must move beyond duplication to illustrate an original idea. Portfolio Types: Expectations: The process of developing a portfolio requires a great deal of time and effort and the five 56 minute class sessions per week are inadequate to create the amount of work necessary for the portfolio. This class is designed to provide concentrated work time in the studio with a teacher present to use as a resource. The studio will be open during all study halls and lunch periods to work. This time is not required, but it is suggested. Work outside of the studio and class is expected. While there will not be a specific assignments assigned for homework, students should expect to spend between four and eight hours a week working outside of class.
2 Critiques are vital to a student s success in class. All students are expected to participate in critiques throughout the year. Critiques will provide a student a vehicle to improving their artwork. Student Objectives: Maintain a strong work ethic and meet all deadlines. Work through and solve visual problems effectively. Refine the ability to produce what you see. Understand how art elements and design principles communicate content. Increase awareness of the creative process. Increase knowledge of art tools and materials. Pursue the art making process with a passion be fearless. Grading: Work is frequently so individual that grading is original to each project. The fundamental expectation for students enrolled in this class will be of the highest quality of media handling, composition, creativity and critical decision making. In addition to rubrics, which will address the elements of art and the principles of design, the criteria set forth by the AP scoring guidelines will also be addressed. 1 POOR 2 WEAK 3 MODERATE 4 GOOD 5 STRONG 6 EXCELLENT Critique will be a vital part of the student/teacher assessment process with constructive criticism of the strengths and weaknesses of individual works and bodies of work. All students are brought together for critiques, generally subsequent to major project deadlines. Each student must present their piece and briefly discuss their intent. Student grades fall into two categories: class work/projects (60%) and class participation (40%). Class participation includes students participation in group and individual critiques, preparation for final projects, and use of class time. Late Work: The FLIANO process does not apply to AP studio. Failure to meet deadlines will affect your grade. A project not turned in will result in a 0%. The project can be submitted late for a maximum of 50%. Please note that the project still needs to be completed for the portfolio review that MUST be submitted to me when it is sent to the college boards. Missing pieces in a portfolio will result in an automatic deduction on the portfolio which is your final exam. Cheating Policy: If a student is caught cheating on a major assignment and/or test, he or she may receive the following: 1 st Offense: 1 hour referral (referral submitted by teacher to the appropriate dean), but an opportunity to retest, and/or complete the assignment with 20% off their retake grade. 2 nd Offense: 4 hour referral (referral submitted by teacher to the appropriate dean), but an opportunity to retest, and/or complete the assignment with 50% off their retake grade. 3 rd Offense: ASDA (referral submitted by teacher to the appropriate dean) and a 0% on their grade. (Note: Due to the different format of major assignments and tests between departments, the times and policies for completing the assignment will be determined by individual departments.) If a student is caught cheating on a homework assignment, he or she may receive a 0% on the assignment and follow the above discipline consequences. Make up work will not be given. The consequences for multiple occurrences of cheating are cumulative. Make up exams must be taken by the end of the following school day. Communication: Teacher Student communication is important. You need to tell me the moment you feel you need additional assistance. I am usually in the building by 6:30AM and I am here until 2:30 PM. If you need to come in and work on a project please let me know in advance. You can also come in during your study hall to work on projects.
