3 JCSFC Art Department Expectations A-Level Fine Art All students who choose to study Fine Art at this level are expected to attend all timetabled lessons and work independently in your own time to develop personal ideas for your projects. Art is a practical subject and it is essential that you keep up to date with classwork and homework to avoid falling behind Anyone who is failing to keep up to date will be given a written warning and a period of two weeks to catch up. All free periods should be spent in the Sixth Form Study Area near D8. If this catch up period is not used effectively, it is most likely that you will be withdrawn from the course. If you are having problems with your work please come and talk to Miss Webster. We want you to do as well as you possibly can, but we can t help you if you don t tell us what the problems are.

4 Year 12: Marking and Assessment Although the Final Deadline for the BEAUTY IN DECAY Project is in January 2019, your work will be submitted for Formative Assessment on a regular basis Once per half term your work will be teacher assessed and marked using the AQA Assessment Criteria Sheet. Once per half term your work will be teacher assessed and you will be provided with written and verbal feedback regarding areas of success and areas for improvement. You and your teacher will determine a deadline by which the improvements will be made and you will sign to confirm this. One lesson per fortnight will be allocated to AfL to enable you to participate in Peer Assessment, AfL and Group Crit Sessions to review the progress that you are making. PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU FAIL TO UTILISE FEEDBACK CONSTRUCTIVELY THEN YOU RUN THE RISK OF FAILING TO ACHIEVE YOUR JCSFC AND ALPS TARGET

6 BEAUTY IN DECAY So what will you be doing in Year 12 Collating a range of primary and secondary resources from which you can produce a range of diverse observational studies that demonstrate your secure understanding of the application of the formal elements. Exploring and experimenting with materials, processes and techniques including batik, machine embroidery, pyrography, printmaking, oil painting and medium surfaces to produce a collection of developed and refined samples. Critically analysing the work of contemporary and historical artists, designers and craftspeople to inform the development of your own creative outcomes. Exploring the visual language of art and design to effectively convey a mature and sophisticated message/ meaning to your audience. Developing an understanding of current social, economic and cultural issues to underpin the research and visual communication of your project.

8 Inspiration and Research As a Sixth Form Art Student, you must show the examiner that your work has been influenced by the work of Artists, Designers and Crafts People. It is unlikely that you will attain a Distinction if you have a limited Knowledge of Art History. You should be independently sourcing images of inspiration from Books, Internet, Magazines and most importantly Museums and Art Galleries. Local Galleries: New Walk Gallery, Leicester Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery Custard Factory, Birmingham Derby Museum and Art Gallery The Atkins Gallery, Hinckley Also try looking for local Arts and Crafts Fair s over the Summer as you will get to see the work of local artists (Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire has a fantastic Craft Fair in August where you get to try glass blowing, jewellery making and much more!) 9 Summer Challenge 1. Take AROUND 35 Photographs THAT EXPLORE THE THEME OF BEAUTY IN DECAY (you can use a phone or camera) Top Tip: Think about photographing interesting compositions 2. Keep all of these photographs so that you can print a contact sheet when you return to school. 3. Select your 6 most effective photographs And Produce a drawing/ painting of each of these 6 images TOP TIPS: This should fill around 3 x a3 pages Vary the scale/size depending on the image and the level of detail included Produce a variety of colour and greyscale studies Use a different material or combination of materials for each study (for example charcoal, then charcoal and chalk on parcel paper) Try to work on a variety of surfaces rather than just white paper (this could include staining papers).

11 As an A-Level Art Student, you will be expected to respond independently to a task/ scenario. Your teacher may give you an artist or material to act as a starting point and you can adapt the outcome to suit your strengths, themes and interests. 1 Hour Art Challenge Portrait and Fashion Illustration Examples Task Inspired by the work of these artists, combine collage with greyscale mark making to produce a mixed media outcome representing the subject matter of your choice

14 Requirements by the end of the lesson You must have: 1 sketch and collage combination study That includes: Papers/ paint/ stitch/ Text etc Greyscale mark Making Some points to consider: Are you going to work onto an outline (high contrast outcome) or a Photograph (darker, more tonal outcome)? What colour paper/ stitch/ paint are you going to use? Could it be selected to symbolise emotion/ character/ atmosphere? Where are you placing the collage? On a focal point? To add contouring? To frame the subject? Will you use fineliner, marker pens, graphite and/ or shading pencil? Will you vary the quality of line (thickness/ weight)? 1 Hour Art Challenge How will you suggest tone (weight, concentration of line etc)?
