1 In this course, students will learn to use 2-D design principles to organize and image on a picture plane in order to communicate content. Students will demonstrate mastery through any two-dimensional medium or process, such as graphic design, digital imaging, photography, collage, fabric design, weaving, fashion design, fashion illustration, painting and printmaking. Students will develop technical skills and familiarize themselves with the functions of visual elements as they create an individual portfolio of work for evaluation at the end of the course. The summer homework assignment has four parts; complete all parts and be prepared to submit them on the first day of class in August as well as participate in an oral critique about these experiences. Pace yourself to complete all of the work on time. Materials: sketchbook (9x12 recommended), 18x24 drawing pad, pencils, charcoal (vine, compressed), tortillion stumps, erasers, spray fixative, colored pencils, ink Research (75 points total) Complete significant research on three different well-known artists. Use your sketchbook as an investigative journal and record as much as you can about each of these artists. Describe and document the issues that are explored in the work of these artists through writing, sketching, and pasting in images. The research should fill at least 10 pages in your book. Examples: Henri Matisse, Georgia O Keefe, Pablo Picasso, Banksy, Roy Lichtenstein, Edward Degas, Andre Derrain, Francoise Nielly, Frida Kahlo, Paul Gauguin, Edward Hopper Sketchbook (50 points total) 31 days! Work in a personal sketchbook/visual journal/altered book. Draw, write, doodle, paint, collage in this book every day for 31 days in a row. Create Four Compositions from the List of Possible Subjects (400 points total) Criteria: The purpose of these works of art is to build up your compositional skills and possibly fulfill some of the portfolio requirements for Breadth or Quality. These works are expected to fully resolved works of art and will take time. Plan to complete an average of one drawing per week. Use the subject list below or come up with your own idea that demonstrates depth of skill and content equivalent to what is proposed below. Use pencil, charcoal, pastels, paint or any other media Use 18x24 drawing surface: paper, canvas, Bristol board, mat board, etc. Consider effective use of art elements and design principles
2 Idea 1: Create a portrait, self-portrait, landscape, or still-life in the style of another artist in which formal aspects of design are emphasized i.e. Monet/Impressionism, Matisse/Fauvism, Picasso/Cubism, Warhol/Pop, Dali/Surrealism, Van Gogh/Postimpressionism, etc. You may have to do a bit of research to understand the stylistic tendencies of these artists/movements. Idea 2: Experiment with mixed media. Do a piece (portrait, self-portrait, landscape, or still life) in which you use at least three different media i.e., a wet medium, a dry medium and some collage element. Idea 3: Zoom in on a section of metallic objects, such as a close-up of part of a bike or motorcycle, or spoons or an eggbeater. Make use of hard-edge metal reflections and cast shadows. Idea 4: Divide a page, canvas, board i.e. the working surface into three equal inset spaces. Do three views of one landscape. Limit yourself to a specific color scheme. Idea 5: Draw an object with interesting texture that shows repetition of shape. Idea 6: Draw at least one shoe of each family member in your household in an interesting way. Idea 7: Create an entire composition consisting of 2 shapes and variations of those shapes. Use complementary or analogous colors to create mood. Hand paint papers with unique textures to cut and paste. Idea 8: Set up a still life with a strong light source, near a window or with a flashlight. Try eggs on torn or crumpled paper, tin cans or glass jars, or fruit on drapery, or raid the vegetable bin of the refrigerator. Again, be sure to compose the entire page. Idea 9: Create a unique design using newspaper, black ink/paint, white paint, and some sort of masking tape. Idea 10: Draw a close up of a cross section of a piece of fruit. AP College Board Reflection (25 points total) AP Studio Art: 2-D Design Title a page in your sketchbook, AP College Board Reflection. Go to the College Board website listed above. Write a one page reflection on your understanding of what is required of you as an AP Studio artist and what personal goals (3-5) have you set based on looking at other high school artist s portfolios. This may be handwritten or typed and taped into your sketchbook, just be clear and thorough in your writing. Next, think about ideas that you may want to pursue as a Concentration and return with a list of 20 potential ideas to be discussed with the class during the second week of school.
