1 Curriculum Map for Visual Arts St. Cyril School Teacher: Quinta Peterson Note: Students in Kindergarten attend art classes once a week for 40 minutes and students in Intermediate (3 rd & 4 th ) once a week for 45 minutes during the entire school year. Students in Advanced Intermediate (5 th & 6 th ) and Junior High (7 th & 8 th ) attend art classes four days a week for 50 minutes, as a Flex choice for up to two trimesters during the school year. Below, in general terms, the content for each grade is listed. The specific projects that spring board from the content are not listed. The Art Standards Matrix of the Diocese of Tucson is followed to introduce, teach and review basic skills. A wide range of sources are used to inspire projects, including instruction books, local art offerings, major artists and art movements through history, ideas garnered from trips and media sources. Most projects last from 5-10 days for AI and JH, depending on complexity and the individual student. When preparing for or in between projects, students are expected to be working on related assignments in their sketchbooks. Kindergarten and Intermediate student projects usually take from one to three classes to complete. They do not have sketchbooks.

2 In our art classes we use a variety of mediums to create projects, including pencils, charcoal, crayons, tempera, watercolor and acrylic paint, oil and chalk pastels, clay, paper mâché and more. I look for effort, participation, conduct and completion in a timely manner. My goal for the students is to create and encourage a joyful way through art to take a risk, discover new things, and build confidence.

3 Kindergarten Intro to the Elements of Art: Line- explore and identify types of lines, create lines with a variety of tools, use line to create pattern and texture Color- demonstrate an understanding of primary, secondary, and neutral colors Shape- discover and use geometric and organic shapes, use them to create art Form- identify form as three dimensional Space- identify positive and negative space Texture- name and identify a variety of textures Explore pattern and rhythm in art, experiment with a variety of drawing media and nontraditional tools Explore drawing and painting in art with a variety of subject matters Create prints using a variety of materials Explore sculpture with clay and assemble 3-D works using recycled materials Arrange a collage composition Discuss the art of students and major artists, examine art Artists: Klee, Kandinsky, Matisse, Rodrigue

5 Advanced Intermediate and Jr. High Principles of Design: Unity- Recognize that all parts of an artwork are united as a team Emphasis- Recognize that emphasis implies dominance of a main idea Balance- Identify symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial balance Variety- Identify variety as a means of adding interest in artwork Pattern- Identify pattern as the regular repeat of an element of art Rhythm- Identify rhythm as the repetition of lines, shapes, colors, textures or patterns in compositions Proportion- Investigate and compare elements to each other in terms of size, quantity, and degree of emphasis Still Life- drawing from observation with correct perspective Landscape Positive and Negative Space Artists: Matisse, Calder, Picasso, Rousseau, Dali, Warhol
