1 COURSE DESCRIPTION Advanced 2D Art COURSE DESCRIPTION The Advanced 2D Art course is designed to give students additional experiences in creative thinking and problem solving using 2D art media. In this class, students will build upon the concepts and skills learned in their Drawing, Studio Art or Painting classes. Students can choose to focus on Drawing or Painting, either in a representational or expressive style, to produce works of art that relate to specific design issues and themes. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the language of art including the tools, processes, concepts, vocabulary terms, and historical or cultural references. 2. Demonstrate Social and Emotional Learning. 3. Demonstrate creative and critical thinking skills used in the design and production of two dimensional artworks. 4. Critique works of his/her own art and the artwork of peers in the class. 5. Create two dimensional works of art that relate to specific design and/or thematic issues. 6. Create works of art based upon the human figure that are developed from observation. 7. Create works of art that are abstract as well as works that are representational or expressive in style. 8. Create two dimensional works of art that share a related concept. COURSE ACTIVITIES AND EXPECTATIONS EVALUATION 1. Work on daily art assignments and projects. 2. Create sketches and models and write information about plans for developing artworks that relate to specific design issues and/or themes. 3. Participate in group discussions and critiques. (SEL 31A, 32, 33) 4. Participate in self-assessment activities. SEL 5. Recognize and evaluate strengths/areas for improvement by discussing progress with teacher. (SEL 31A) 6. Recognize and meet behavior and performance expectations of teacher. (SEL 31B, 32A) 7. Read and discuss text materials. A. Each six-week grade will be determined in the following fashion: AREA PERCENTAGE (approximate) 1st Grading Period Idea develpment 20% 2nd Grading Period Idea development 20% 3rd Grading Period Idea development 20% 1st 6 Weeks 2nd 6 Weeks 3rd 6 Weeks Final Exam Semester Grade 25% + 25 % + 25% + 25% = 100%

Understand processes, traditional tools and modern technologies used in the arts. B. Apply skills and knowledge necessary to create and perform in one or more of the arts. 27. Understand the role of the arts in civilizations, past and present. A. Analyze how the arts function in history, society and everyday life. B. Understand how the arts shape and reflect history, society and everyday life. COURSE LEARNING TARGETS Unit 1: Shape Repetition SPECIFIC UNIT LEARNING TARGETS - PRODUCE A WORK OF ART THAT FOCUSSES ON DESIGN WITH AN EMPHASIS ON SHAPE REPETITION, SURFACE TEXTURE, AND COLOR USING A FLORAL MOTIF. (P) Tools, processes, concepts, vocabulary terms, and historical references - Define and recognize vocabulary terms (K) - Recognize, identify, and define elements and principles specific to the assignment (K) - Identify properties of materials (K) - Recognize cultural and historical works of art that relate to the unit. (K) - Determine processes and procedures needed to develop the artwork (K,R, P) - Demonstrate proper care of tools and supplies. (S, SEL) Idea development - Create sketches and preliminary designs for assignments. - Demonstrate creative and critical thinking in the planning and selection of designs. -Demonstrate appropriate use of references to create an original work of art. -Analyze proportions. (R) -Interpret form as shape. (S) -Demonstrate drawing and/or painting accuracy. -Demonstrate use of shape repetition, texture, color, light and shadow, and angle of view to develop the image. Color and Value -Demonstrate accurate light and shadows. (S) -Demonstrate contrasting values to enhance forms. (S) -Demonstrate create use of the chosen color scheme. (S) -Demonstrate exploration, skill, and control of media. (S) -Demonstrate color theory. -Express personal style through use of media. (S.P) -Demonstrate consistency of technique. -Use shape repetition within the form and throughout the composition. -Create a balanced composition using either formal balance or informal balance (K,R)

3 -Analyze and organize elements to create shape repetition and movement (R,S) -Create emphasis and movement. -Use color and surface texture to create unity and variety. - Participate in self-assessment processes. (SEL, K) Unit 2: Abstraction SPECIFIC UNIT LEARNING TARGETS: PRODUCE NON-REPRESENTATIONAL ABSTRACT PAINTINGS USING COLOR AND TEXTURE (P) Tools, processes, concepts, vocabulary terms, and historical references - Define and recognize vocabulary terms associated with abstraction. (K) - Recognize, identify, and define elements and principles specific to the assignment. (K) - Identify properties of materials. (K) - Recognize cultural and historical works of art that relate to abstract art. (K) - Determine processes and procedures needed to develop the artwork (K, R, P) - Recognize concepts, philosophies, and methods of abstraction as used in 20 th century art. (K) - Recognize forms of abstract art: objective and non-objective (K) - Recognize and use expressive techniques with media. (K, S) - Demonstrate proper care of tools and supplies. (S, SEL) Composition - Demonstrate exploration, skill, and control of media. (S) - Demonstrate color theory. (K, R, S) - Demonstrate use of texture, color, and movement. (S) - Demonstrate careful and meaningful technical decisions. (S) - Express personal style through use of media. (S.P) - Analyze and organize elements to create shape repetition and rhythm and movement (R,S) - Create focal areas for emphasis and develop movement within the composition. (R, S) - Use color and surface texture to create unity and variety. (S) - Use color, movement, and surface texture to develop mood. (S) - Use different methods to show depth (Ss) Critique - Participate in group critiques. (SEL, K, R ) - Participate in self-assessment processes. (SEL, K) Unit 3: Human Figure SPECIFIC UNIT LEARNING TARGETS: - PRODUCE FIGURE DRAWINGS FROM OBSERVATION. (P)

(S) - Demonstrate careful and meaningful technical decisions. (S) - Express personal style through use of media. (S.P) - Use shape repetition within the form and throughout the composition. - Create context with background and/or foreground. - Create emphasis and movement. - Use color and surface to create unity and variety. - Participate in self-assessment process (SEL, K) Unit 4: Series of Related Works SPECIFIC LEARNING TARGETS: PRODUCE A SERIES OF ARTWORKS THAT INCORPORATE PERSONAL SYMBOLS AND ARE RELATED THROUGH A COMMON CONCEPT OR THEME. (P) Tools, processes, concepts, vocabulary terms, and historical references. - Recognize and use expressive techniques with media. (K,S) - Recognize symbolism in art. (K) - Recognize universal symbols as used throughout history or various cultures.(k) - Demonstrate proper care of tools and supplies. (S) Intent - Develop a series of related works of art - Identify personal symbols and use these in a work of art and in a series of related works. (K, S, P) - Communicate a concept or message using personal symbols. (R, S, P) - Establish mood and intention in a work of art by illustrating a theme or concept. (R, S) Form - Analyze proportions (R) - Accurately develop form or distort form to illustrate a concept. (R, S) - Use value and or color to create illusion of form. (S, P) Technique
