1 2017 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT AP STUDIO ART - Mrs. Deborah Dayhoff, Visual Arts Chair ddayhoff@tcsfairfax.org The AP Studio Art Summer assignment will have two parts. 3-D Design students will follow the instructions but create a sculpture-in-the-round. Please read all instructions carefully. PART ONE: Students will create one work of art (36 x 48 ) using the following materials: Newspaper: black and white, color, foreign, pictures, articles, and headlines. Be sure to use all the types listed. Tape: any kind and any width White or clear glue: any kind Black paint: tempera, acrylic, or oil White paint: tempera, acrylic, or oil Black charcoal: compressed, vine, or pencil Corrugated cardboard: brown only Student s own photographic images Concept: Restoration: one of the four pillars of the Christian faith: creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. If one is unable to define the word restoration, research may be necessary to understand the meaning in context. After investigation and thought, students should create a piece of artwork that expresses the provided word/concept. The challenge of this assignment is to push students to solve a visual problem through art-making. Requirement: Students must use ALL of the material listed above and ONLY those materials. Students may use them in any amount and in any combination, but each should be easily recognizable. Students may build the material up, creating some relief/dimension in the work, but the final product must be a wall-hanging piece and not a sculpture. The only exception applied to 3-D Design, which should be a sculpture-in-the-round. Student work MUST display some sort of representational element. Student work can be from direct observation, from imagination, or a combination of the two. Student work can be abstract, realistic, naturalistic, impressionistic, or of any style you wish, as long as it retains some representation. Student s art methods can include, but are not limited to, cutting, tearing, folding, crumpling, or distorting any of the materials. Student work can be vertical or horizontal. The final artwork for 2-D and Drawing students must be PRECISELY 36 x D Design students will make a work that is 3 x 3 x 4.

2 Due Date: Students must have completed this work by the first day of class, absolutely no excuses. If students do not have this assignment on the first day of class, the first project grade for the AP class will be a zero. Students should plan to spend at least eight hours on this artwork. If the work is of an AP quality, it may be one of the artworks for the portfolio. Students should the teacher with any questions at ddayhoff@tcsfairfax.org. Students should not wait until the last minute! This is a very big work of art and will require time, attention, and energy. Students should approach the work with creativity and fun. Assessment will be based on the following. Did the student... Meet the deadline? Use all of the required materials and only those materials? Is your artwork precisely 36 x 48? Include a representational element? What is it? Why did you include it? Display a strong composition? How? Show evidence of time, care and attention? Show evidence of excellent craftsmanship? Give an example. Display creative thinking and problem-solving? How? Illustrate the concept? Is your piece creative and unique to you? What does your piece say about you? On a separate piece of paper, students will evaluate their work and effort based on addressing each one of the above-listed questions (1 2 pages, handwritten). This response should be in paragraph form, read smoothly, and not simply a list the questions and answers. The above questions are only provided to guide the reflective paragraph. Students will be graded on both thought and mechanics of this response paragraph. PART TWO: Choose one of the below prompts. Make one work of art using a minimum of five of the seven materials: Newspaper: black and white, color, foreign, pictures, articles, and headlines. Be sure to use all the types listed. Tape: any kind and any width White or clear glue: any kind Black paint: tempera, acrylic, or oil White paint: tempera, acrylic, or oil Black charcoal: compressed, vine, or pencil Corrugated cardboard: brown only Student s own photographic images Students should choose one of the four prompts below and complete one artwork which shows at least of 8 10 hours of work. 3-D students will respond with a solution of own choice and chosen size.

3 A Landscape Students will draw a view of a landscape that has been actually observed. In the foreground, students should include a close-up of leaves, rocks, wildflowers, bark, or any textured area. Students should think of this artwork as a composition, as well as an exercise in creating deep space on a flat surface (think about perspective). Students should research artists such as Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Ansel Adams, John Constable, Andrea Montegna, and Paul Gauguin or others who employ landscapes. Students should use mixed media and color. A Still Life... Students should arrange a group of objects and apply a strong light source on the still life. Students should take time to select objects with meaning. Some of the still life objects should display a reflective surface, and some may have texture, and/or transparent objects. Possible objects include eggs on torn or crumpled paper, fruit on a wrinkled towel, or items from the veggie bin of the fridge. When choosing objects, students should consider the size relationships, as well as the surface quality of each item. Students should consider of where the objects will be arranged, such as next to a window, in front of a fireplace, or on a table. Students should think about the whole composition, which is equally important as the objects themselves. Students should consider the light source, such as a window or a table lamp. Overhead lighting is not recommended! Students should create a series of thumbnail sketches in a sketchbook using varied viewpoints and lighting, and then create a composition using the best of all ideas. Students may select their own art media for this prompt. Who Am I, REALLY? Students should create a still life with character. Students should describe the character of a particular person (real or imaginary) without picturing the person, using still life or a room interior. The objects that are included should have a specific meaning to or for the character in the artwork. Students should consider the point of view. Media to be used for this work can include, but not are limited to, charcoal, pencil, colored pencil, and/or marker.

4 Objects That Reflect Students should choose a shiny, highly polished object or objects that reflect the surrounding environment Recommended objects include, but are not limited to, tin cans, glass jars, a part of a bicycle or motorcycle, a car bumper, spoons or eye glasses. Students should arrange one or more of these objects and arrange a strong light source so as to create a reflection of other objects on the shiny surface. Students should choose the most interesting section to use and zoom in and crop the area. Students should create two or three thumbnail sketches in a sketchbook that demonstrate two or more points of view. Students should complete a finished composition of the artwork using charcoal. Students should refer to other artists, such as Parmigianino, Janet Fish, and/or others as examples. Requirements: The size of the artwork must be 18 x D Design students may choose their size, but the work should show significant effort. If students are not working from life, images must be their own work. Artworks that copy photos from the web or magazines will not be graded and can t be included in your portfolio. Please include only the photos taken by the student. Students may not use art that has been made for another class, including private lessons. These must be new artworks.
