1 LVPA Summer Studio Series: Name Introduction: Create a series of images based on personal interests at a 1-finished-image per week schedule = 8 total drawings (or 1 painting per two week schedule = 4 total paintings). A working process will be tracked in a sketchbook. That process will include goal setting and lesson review, brainstorming, source material search, thumbnail sketching of multiple arrangements / compositions, value options, color options (when appropriate), media experiments, refinements all completed before starting on the final drawing/painting. Development: Follow and practice the procedure outlined below. It is essential that you investigate variations in your designs by creating multiple thumbnail sketches Unless you make several examples, you can t make choices! Procedure Develop a working Process; Gather, Observe or Invent the following: 1. Set Goals outline the purpose(s) of your art project; describe lessons from previous classes to review and practice 2. Brainstorm make a list of visual elements for your image: Subject(s); additional objects to arrange; background; textures and patterns 3. Search for Source Materials 4. Selection choose the visual elements to include in your image 5. Thumbnails sketch a minimum of three (3) Arrangements 6. Selection choose one 7. Thumbnails sketch a minimum of three (3) Compositions 8. Selection choose one 9. Thumbnails sketch a minimum of three (3) Value schemes 10. Selection choose one 11. Optional Thumbnails sketch possible Color schemes, Media Experiments, etc 12. Select and refine for the final image 13. Execute the final drawing/painting (Total process = 8 hours per week - minimum) Evaluation: How do I evaluate the final result? (self-critique) Does the final product do what the thumbnails predicted? Does the final product do what I originally had in mind? If I were to begin the process again, what parts would I repeat? If I were to begin the process again, what parts would I revise? What can I do to push the idea (develop) further in my next drawing? What s Next? Develop a new image in the series consider the following: Brainstorm to develop the image series by adding (or subtracting) objects. Investigate new compositions by cropping or enlarging pictorial field. Maximize dynamic point-of-view, beginning first with the background or environment; use foreshortening and overlap to increase visual interest.

2 Grading / Evaluation: Deliverables required on first day of school: Self-Critique Evaluation Forms (8 forms attached in journal at the beginning of each project) Personal Project Sketchbook Final Products (one drawing/painting per week) 8 total 100 points matching Self-Critique Evaluation Forms with Project Journal stages o Eight (8) self-critique evaluation forms properly filled out and inserted at the beginning of each project in Personal Project Sketchbook o Sketchbook includes all goals; brainstorming lists; source materials; thumbnails with arrangements, compositions, value schemes, experiments and color schemes. Work shown sequentially and dated. 100 points on the Quality of project stages (reflected in the sketchbook and final image) o 4-P s Rubric: Participation; Process; Practice; Product 100 points for Presentation at the beginning of the school year o Presentation / Critique Rubric: Ownership; Practice; Articulation; Dedication =300 level project Materials: Journal/Sketchbook dedicated exclusively to Personal Project Drawing / Painting supplies as needed: Pencils (various); Assorted Drawing Papers; Markers; India ink, Experimental Media; Canvas; Brushes, etc. Source Materials: Original Photographs prepared for personal project; Items arranged for direct observation; Found Images from newspapers, magazines; Images printed out from web, etc. Experiments: Thumbnails exploring combinations of drawing / painting media on assorted papers Purpose: - Discover and develop personal interests in art - Learn how to develop a flexible working process - Build a collection (series) of cohesive, individual works - Review and practice lessons learned in previous classes - Practice brainstorming and produce quick developmental thumbnail sketches - Understand the positive benefits of developing and refining an idea through the creative process to achieve original artistic solutions - Create work ethic through disciplined and consistent work habits

3 Choosing a Subject: A. Classical Genres Portrait Landscape Still Life B. Modern Genres The Human Figure (Human Condition) Fantasy -scapes [PowerPoint Handout] Kinds of -scapes Skyscapes or Cloudscapes are depictions of clouds, weatherforms, and atmospheric conditions. Moonscapes show the landscape of a moon. Seascapes and Riverscapes depict oceans, rivers, etc. Cityscapes or townscapes depict cities (urban landscapes). Hardscapes are paved over areas like streets and sidewalks, housing developments, and industrial areas. Inscapes are landscape-like (usually surrealist or abstract) artworks which seek to convey the psychoanalytic view of the mind as a three-dimensional space.
