1 AP Summer Art Projects 2018 Summer Requirements: At least size 9x12 sketchbook with at least 50 sketches. These sketches should be filled with practicing sketches, ideas for your final pieces throughout the year. At least half of them (25) should be from life. You should look to spend about around 30 minutes and an hour on each sketch. You should spend at least 20 hours on your sketchbook total. Quicker, fast paced sketches would be contour or blind contour exercises or conceptual plans/sketches for concentrations. Sketches should be dated, timed, and numbered on the bottom right hand corner, lightly with a pencil. 3 finalized pieces, ready for critique and to be reworked following feedback. The progress of these should be reflected in your sketchbook. (The initial ideas that progress into finalized pieces). Visit at least two art galleries over the summer. Record a page in your sketchbook about your experiences. Describe/draw something that you found interesting, worth investigating, or remarkable. Bring back a brochure or images of you around the art gallery. Be familiar with the principles and elements of art. This knowledge and vocabulary will help you tremendously with your art. Go through the list of artists provided within this document. Choose 5 artists that are most interesting to you to do research on and make 3-4 thumbnail sketches of their work. (These count towards your 50 sketches). Write a few sentences stating why the artist/artwork interesting to you It s ok to get ideas from other people s work! Scour the internet for ideas and ways to make them your own and unique to you. ABSOLUTELY, never copy anyone s work or duplicate a photo from a photograph that exists on the internet. You can use pieces of things as a reference, of course. Also, you may not put your name on the front of anything. Don t sign your work on the front.
2 Visit the AP Studio Art page early and often. There are three choices available for visual arts students: Drawing 2-D Design Look at the page with examples of AP students work from Look at all of the examples: Notes about summer projects: Be thinking of a concentration when doing summer assignments. A concentration is a theme that you carry throughout 12 pieces. Make liberal use of the sketchbook over the summer break. Try to draw something once a day. Even if it s small! This is your opportunity to experiment with a variety of approaches, techniques, and subject matter. I would recommend going beyond the expectations. Sketchbook: Your sketchbook is the most important tool towards your AP Studio Art Success. Your sketches should be a combination of quick studies and more developed work. Draw from direct observation for at least 25 full page sketches. They can include small notes and investigative information, but should be focused on art making. Use the sketchbook as a laboratory for exploring a variety of themes. Use your sketchbook to record some of your activities or places you visit during the summer. Abstractions and inventions are also options for your sketchbook. Again, draw from direct observation as much as possible. Below are some ideas of things to put in your sketchbooks. Look at artwork; keep track of the artists who inspire you. The more time you spend, the more defined your works will be. Sketchbook Ideas: Drapery or pillow arrangement Patterns in textiles A park Scene at a Restaurant Transform one object into another Sink with dishes Abstraction based on a real place Opposites Buildings looking up Something touched by a strong light source Metallic or shiny objects Wrapped objects Stacks of books Design a typeface Crumpled paper bag Create a textured surface and then draw on it Mixed media drawing in the style of Jim Dine s tools Negative space drawing line only Extreme Close Up Humans or animals in motion Hands in different positions Sketches of your favorite artist s work Kitchen tools Children s Toys Different Types of Trees Portrait of an elderly person s face Draw from life using all contour lines
3 The same object with different techniques (scumbling, stippling, cross hatching, etc) Collage cut up photograph/magazine pieces into mosaic Imaginary scenes of monsters, fairy tales, underwater creatures, mythical characters Draping fabric- folds Portrait of someone from life. Try 20 minutes with them sitting or standing comfortably Still life with your favorite objects (jewelry, makeup, art supplies, pens, souvenirs from places you ve traveled) Childhood memory
4 Finalized Pieces for Drawing/Painting Focused Students (Breadth) The following assignments are for your 3 final pieces. Pick 3. You should push the boundaries with of them. Find connections. Experiment. Try new Techniques. Challenge yourself with different subject matters. Don t. Be. Too. Scared. To. Fail. The best art comes from hard work and sometimes that is difficult. There should be evidence of them developing through your sketchbook. All of your final assignments should be 9 x12 or larger. Still Life drawing: Arrange objects of different sizes and shapes on a flat surface. Show depth in your drawing by using foreground, middleground, and background. A drapery or cloth can be arranged behind the still life objects. Make sure to use a strong, directional light source. You can take a photo of your still life for reference, but do the drawing from direct observation. DO NOT DRAW FROM THE PHOTO. Distortion and exaggeration are acceptable as long as it is based on observation and is intentional. Study the work of Chardin and Cezanne for ideas on arrangement and style. Drawing or painting with emphasis on value: Value in art is defined as the relationship of lights, darks and grays in a drawing or painting. Difference in values allows for the illusion of depth, space and form in two-dimensional art. Create a realistic drawing or painting that uses a wide range of values. The subject matter could be based on an observed subject such as a still life or landscape. Photos can be used, but not as the primary source. Perspective Drawing: 1pt, 2pt, or 3pt drawing of an architectural, man-made space. Be sure to mark the horizon line and vanishing points. Some examples include a hallway, the corner of a street or an extreme angle looking up or down at a subject. Working from original photos is acceptable. Use graphite for this assignment. Landscape drawing or painting This is a drawing or painting based on an observed subject or a photograph that you have taken. It can be executed in one of three styles realistic, abstract, or a combination of the two. Portrait or Self-portrait drawing Make this drawing entirely from observation using a mirror. No working from photographs please. Use graphite, charcoal or colored pencil. Take creative liberties with your design and style if you desire. Expressionist painting Expressionism is not a distinct movement, but rather an approach to art making that puts the emphasis on the artist s interpretation of a subject. This can include drawing and color use that departs from reality. Research an artist and create a painting based on that artist s style. Research German Expressionism for dynamic examples. Be prepared to discuss what qualities your painting shares with the model artist. *Any of these are suitable for some pieces in 2D Design, but could be done on the computer or in photographs. This is a good idea for 2D Design focused students: Collage with focal point: A focal point is the most important part of an artwork this is the area where your eye goes first when looking at a composition. (Note: This does not necessarily mean the center of the composition space.) Take all the photos yourself and use a minimum of 20 individual
5 images to make the whole. Vary the distance of the parts of your composition zooming in and out of different areas to create emphasis and rhythm. Individual photos can be cropped to different sizes. Mount the photo collage on tag board or other sturdy surface. Look at the work of the artist David Hockney for ideas on technique/composition. Size is variable according to your approach.

The construction is perfect and represents a distinguished advanced art project Project is mostly neat and clean, project is complete. Tools and methods could have been used more carefully to create a more well made final project Project is not neat and clean or complete, tools and materials were not used efficiently or properly to create a well made final project. Projects is messy and incomplete, care was not taken to create a well made product.
