1 KNES Art & Design Course Outline Year 8 Art & Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Key Stage 3 students at KNES use colour, form, tone, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, they learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments. They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich their personal and public lives. In Term 1, Objects and viewpoints Year 8 students will learn about the correct use of B-range pencils to create a Tonal Range and apply their newly acquired knowledge to their artworks. They will focus mostly on drawing during this term and learn how to use the Grid drawing method to make precise a detailed drawing. All projects will be underpinned by a formal introduction to the Elements of Art through worksheets and assignments. The Theory of Colour will be introduced and explored through experimentation with different media. In Term 2, Animating art Year 8 students will learn about the Principles of Art and how to implement them successfully in their artworks. In this unit, pupils explore the use of the moving image to communicate ideas about particular genres or styles of art. They analyse paintings, films, cartoons, illustrations, digital images, photographs and images from contemporary visual culture. They learn how to represent ideas and values using the moving image. They make connections between abstract expressionism, expressionism and pop art of the 1960s and contemporary moving images. In Term 3, Shared view Year 8 students will implement their newly acquired art knowledge and skills successfully in their artworks. In this unit, pupils explore and use natural and other materials to construct a temporary, site-specific work, which represents a shared view of their locality. They work in groups to make a collective response. They analyse examples of work from different times and cultures where ideas, beliefs and values are shared and communicated through art, craft and design.

2 Assessment for Year 8: Behaviour in class and participation in the lessons: 20 Equipment and materials: 20 Sketchpad Portfolio: 20 End of Term Practical Project: 20 End of Term written exam: 20 Total: 100 Studio Rules / Teacher s expectations / Discipline policy: When you hear the bell at the start of the day or at break time, line up immediately. Students should line up quietly outside the Art studio, enter quietly, leave their bags neatly against the wall, get their Art Boxes and stand quietly behind their chairs to greet the teacher. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the work you missed from a classmate upon your return. Equipment and materials are a vital part of your internal mark and failing to bring required equipment, which will always be prescribed in advance to the lesson will result in a 0/20 in that section of the continuous assessment criteria. If you miss a deadline or area within a specific discipline, you will receive a 0/20 unless you can provide a medical note to show you were not able to attend. You are to use washrooms before school and during scheduled breaks, not during lessons. Be sure to buy food in the cafeteria before the last minutes of your break; you may not bring any food and/or drink into the studio. Lateness and unauthorized absence will be punished following the discipline policy.

Make a tonal drawing, you could also add in some colour. 5 Animating Art Explain how we can add sound to our drawings Explain how to shade the character They will write a script about their story in 6 scenes 6 Animating Art Do a worksheet about Movement in Art Create their own artwork, using their Black Permanent Marker to show Movement 7 Animating Art Do a worksheet about Emphasis Create their own artwork, using mixed media to show Emphasis 9 Animating Art Movement in painting Make a copy from one of the optical images.
