This will be accomplished through a comprehensive and balanced delivery of theoretical information, technical demonstration and studio practice. The course will prepare students for advanced studies in related disciplines. Historical and contemporary art references and exposure to art language and concepts will give students a solid foundation on which to develop an independent approach to their art. After completing this course the students will be able to: Render observed objects and spaces accurately according to our sense of vision. Render observed objects and spaces expressively according to subjective interpretation. Express and convey feeling, ideas and meaning by means of pictorial form Gain confidence in your observational and recording abilities. Embody basic principles and techniques of observing and recording human form and space. Embody basic techniques of composing pictorial form with line, tone, texture, volume and mass. Understand compositional strategies and elements of art and design. Understand a range of historical and contemporary artistic approaches to pictorial form. Embody elementary artistic language and concepts of pictorial form. Understand the basic anatomy of the human body. Articulate a personal interpretation of a subject matter via pictorial form. Course Format: Class assignments and homework will be introduced though lectures and discussions, visual presentations and demonstrations. Comprehensive studio practice with individual guidance will be complemented by regular group critiques and discussions. Research, studies, as well as extracurricular production time may be necessary for successful completion of in class and homework assignments. Field trips may be integrated into the course curriculum.

2 Course Requirements 1. Mastering technical, practical and conceptual principles covered in class. 2. Active participation in class discussions and critiques. 3. 4 Week 13: Final critique Academic Integrity The academic enterprise is founded on honesty, civility, and integrity. As members of this enterprise, all students are expected to know, understand, and follow the codes of conduct regarding academic integrity. At the most basic level, this means submitting only original work done by you and acknowledging all sources of information or ideas and attributing them to others as required. This also means you should not cheat, copy, or mislead others about what is your work. Violations of academic integrity (i.e., misconduct) lead to the breakdown of the academic enterprise, and therefore serious consequences arise and harsh sanctions are imposed. For example, incidences of plagiarism or cheating may result in a mark of zero on the assignment or exam and more serious consequences may apply if the matter is referred to the President s Advisory Committee on Student Discipline. Careful records are kept in order to monitor and prevent recurrences. A more detailed description of academic integrity, including the University s policies and procedures, may be found in the Academic Calendar at SAFEWALK Don't want to walk alone at night? Not too sure how to get somewhere on campus?
