1 Unit Theme: Re-Imagining My World Lesson Plan Title: My Community Map Lesson Length: One workshop day Teacher: Katielynn O'Toole Grade Level: Ages CCA Summer Workshop Lesson Overview: Students will learn about various artists using colorful city/urban-scapes as their subject matter. Students will discuss aspects of their own community that are important to them such as school, their family, and places they visit: the park, river, friend's houses, baseball games, etc. Students will then create their own community map in the style of Friedrich Hundertwasser, James Rizzi, and Heather Galler. Art Production: On large watercolor paper, students will draw their community map with oil pastels. They will then use watercolors to paint a color resist over the pastels. Art History: Heather Galler- City Scapes Friedrich Hundertwasser James Rizzi Vocabulary: point-of-view perspective proportion Layering Outlining Materials: (list all student supplies needed for this lesson) oil pastels Watercolor pencils large watercolor paper 18" x 24" crayons brushes Management Procedures: Introduction- The students will be asked about important features of our community. 'What do you enjoy doing in Columbia, what are some of your daily routines around our city?' (going on a walk around the neighborhood, school, going to the park or zoo, etc.) The students will be asked to take a couple minutes to brainstorm and write their responses in their journal. After they are done, each student will share a couple items from their list.

2 The teacher will then introduce the artist examples and ask the students about the works. 'What do you see in these pictures?' 'Do you think the city really looked like this?' 'Why do you think he drew it like this?' (Friedrich Hundertwasser's cityscapes) 'Why do you think the artist used such bright colors?' A discussion will be held on how to represent parts of our community as a symbol of what is important to us. By drawing aspects of our community that are important to us, we can share with others a glimpse into our lives. Explanation- The teacher will introduce the process of the project. Using many of the items listed in the brainstorm session, the students will create their own 'community map' and re-imagine their city in one picture. The students are encouraged to include as many details as they can: people they know, streets, cars, buildings, trees, etc. The items can be arranged in any manner on the paper. They students can be creative with how they assemble their map. Like the artists' work shown earlier, the maps do not have to be realistic. Demonstration- The teacher will demonstrate suggestions on how to get started. (Maybe start with some streets going across the paper. Sometimes it's easy to start by drawing your home first...) Emphasize how to press down with the oil pastels to leave bold lines for the watercolor. The teacher will explain how different points of view and perspectives can be captured in the drawing. (Birds eye view, condensed view) Discuss overlapping and layering as a way of adding detail and complexity to the drawing. The teacher will also review how to use water color and how to make colors extra vibrant (use less water) Teach students about contrasting the oil and water colors. Dark watercolors contrast well with light oil pastel colors, vice versa. Materials Distribution- Students will be given a sheet of watercolor paper, 18" x 24" and oil pastels. The students may start out by sketching the larger aspects of their community with pencil (streets, house outlines, etc.) and then trace and add details with oil pastel. Teacher/ Student Activities- The teacher will assist each student in designing their communities. The teacher may ask, 'What are some everyday sights you see around our city?' or 'What details can you add around your house?' (Trees, cars, grass, etc.) The student to have an adequate amount of detail drawn before moving on to watercolor. When adding water color, students are encouraged to cover all the white space and to experiment with a wide range of colors and mixing colors. Clean up- The students can dump their water from their cups into the sink. Brushes are to be washed and left to dry. Artwork can be taken to a designated area to dry. Extension Activity: The students can draw a map of their dream home. Ask them to draw details such as rooms, furniture, amenities (game room, garden, art studio) Materials needed for the Extension Activity: 8.5" x 11" paper pencils colored pencils

3 Assessment considerations: 1. Did the student show a variety of perspectives, overlapping, or layering? 2. Did they cover all of the paper with watercolor? Is the entire composition filled? 3. Did the student explore an assortment of colors? Teacher Resources & References:
