1 Napa Valley College ARTS Fundamentals of Drawing Spring 2013 Syllabus Mondays and Wednesdays 9:30AM - 12:20PM Fain Hancock COURSE INFORMATION COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on the development of observational skills and drawing techniques, employing a wide range of drawing media and subject matter. Students will develop technical ability and independent, intuitive responses to material and subject matter. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Produce finished drawings in multiple media that synthesize core observational drawing concepts and techniques. 2. Evaluate and critique student drawings and receive criticism from others. COURSE OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the mastery of the course student learning outcomes, students will: 1. Create a portfolio of finished drawings in multiple media including charcoal, graphite, and ink that demonstrates the ability to: Observe and accurately record essential visual characteristics of unique objects using both line and value. Organize spaces and objects within a drawing in accordance with principles of good design and composition. Apply the principles and techniques of linear and atmospheric perspective to render the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Observe and accurately record simple and complex forms through gradations of value. Synthesize and apply core observational drawing concepts and techniques in complex observational drawings. 2. Evaluate drawings orally and in writing using correct terminology related to concepts, materials and techniques. 3. Critique finished drawings and receive criticism from others 4. Select and prepare appropriate papers, surfaces, and supports for a wide range of drawing media. COURSE STRUCTURE: This is a studio class. Most of our time is used for studio production and practice. In class projects and homework exercises are assigned weekly covering a variety of subject matter and materials. Work will be evaluated in both formal group critiques and in frequent, informal discussions. Students are required to keep a journal sketchbook outside of class. Most homework assignments are designed for this book.

2 READING: A Guide to Drawing, Daniel Mendelowitz Buy a used copy at amazon.com. The tenth edition is available for less than $5. ATTENDANCE AND CONDUCT: Students who miss more than two class periods without documentation excusing their absences or who fail to arrange their absences in advance could be dropped from the course. Art making requires consistent, focused engagement. Be fully present and ready to work hard. Your success in this class is dependent on your sustained, sincere efforts. Cell phones, ipods and other electronic devices are not allowed during class time. Drawing requires consistent, focused engagement. Be fully present and ready to work hard. Your success in this class is dependent on your sustained, sincere efforts. GRADING: will be based on individual drawings, written assignments, participation in group and individual critiques and your homework. You will be graded for effort, technical and conceptual growth and completeness. The final grade will be based on the following percentages: FINAL GRADE Portfolio 50% Critiques 20% Homework 10% Quizzes, written 10% reports Class participation 10% Student work will be evaluated at regular intervals during the semester. Students will receive a progress grade and written comments after portfolio reviews and critiques. The final portfolio will contain 20 drawings. These will be observational drawings, done as homework or in-class. The portfolio is a snapshot of the semester s work and should contain work from this semester only. Including work done in another art class or high school is unacceptable and will be considered cheating. The sketchbook will contain 119 drawings one drawing per day - in addition to homework or class work. These can be drawings from your imagination or observational work. Seven sketchbook drawings Week 2: Line: Gesture, Contour and Perspective Drawings Monday, January 28 Begin to execute simple shapes from observation, perspective. Bring: paper, vine charcoal. Read: Mendelowitz on gesture, line, contour, perspective Homework: Draw a box in perspective accurately. Focus on structure and accurate angles. Include the horizon line. 14 sketchbook drawings Week 3: Line Continued, Value Monday, February 4 Drawing simple rounded shapes, further exploration of perspective Bring: completed box drawing homework; vine charcoal, charcoal pencil, chamois, erasers, paper. Read: ellipse handout Homework: Draw and shade a cylindrical shape. 21 sketchbook drawings Vocabulary Quiz: Define as used in class: line, form, volume, gesture, contour, one-point perspective, two point perspective, value. Please handwrite this information in your sketchbook. Week 4: Value, Shape Construction Monday, February 11 Simple shapes become simple objects Bring: completed cylinder drawing; vine charcoal, charcoal pencil, chamois, erasers, paper, vocabulary quiz. Read: Mendelowitz on value.

Homework: Execute a series of thumbnails and a finished drawing of one showing a compelling composition. 35 sketchbook drawings Week 6: Cropping and Critique Monday, February 25 Learning to discuss your work, presenting your work to the class. Bring: two finished drawings to present to the class. Read: critique handout. Homework: Draw an object cropped so that it is no longer clearly recognizable. 42 sketchbook drawings Vocabulary Quiz: Define as used in class: linear perspective, shading, critique, composition, blending, picture plane, vanishing point, horizon line Week 7: Shadows Monday, March 4 Plotting shadows, drawing in low light Bring: cropped drawing object, drawing supplies. Read: Mendelowitz on line. Homework: an abstract drawing. 105 sketchbook drawings PORTFOLIO REVIEW Friday, May 4: Last day to drop with a W Week 16: Self Portrait Monday, May 13 Enlarging from a grid Bring: large, clear black and white photograph of yourself --- two copies of the same photograph, rulers, drawing supplies.
