Focus on perceptually based drawing, observational skills, technical abilities, and creative responses to materials and subject matter, including great works of the human imagination. C O U R S E O B J E C T I V E S 1. Implement concepts of composition in a series of studio and outside drawings. 2. Use and explain light-logic, visual perspective, and spatial composition to create the illusion of three dimensions. 3. Develop an appreciation for drawing as the basic art element and as a communication skill. 4. Experience innovative approaches in mixed media drawing. 5. Understand and implement use of pertinent terminology. 6. Develop an appreciation and understanding of art history. S T U D E N T L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E S Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Create drawings from observation with full values showing the illusion of threedimensional space. 2. Appraise works of art which demonstrate historical and contemporary developments, critical trends, materials, and approaches in drawing. 3. A selected drawing assignment will be evaluated for: a. Observational skills and accuracy of proportion b. Application of space and relevant perspective techniques c. Use of value to create depth S E R V I C E S F O R S T U D E N T S W I T H D I S A B I L I T I E S Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSP&S) at Los Angeles Mission College is a support system that enables students to fully participate in the college s regular programs and activities. 2 C L A S S P O L I C I E S 1. Attendance: Students who have pre-registered for a class and who do not attend the First meeting of the class forfeit their right to a place in the class. Students are expected to attend every meeting of all classes for which he or she is registered. A student absent from classes for emergency reasons must inform the instructor of the reason for the absence. Whenever absence in hours exceed the number of hours the class meets per week, the student may be excluded from the class by the instructor. This means if you miss more than one class, you may be excluded. It is the student s responsibility to officially drop any class he/she does not continue to attend. 2. Cheating and Plagiarism is the wrongful appropriation and stealing and publication of another author s language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions and the representation of them as one s own original work. Plagiarism is considered academic dishonesty. (Wikipedia on Plagiarism) The instructor reserved the right to determine if cheating or plagiarism has occurred: if it does the student will receive an F on the assignment or exam, and may receive a F for the course. 3. Standards of Student Conduct: Students are expected to maintain a professional level of conduct to facilitate a learning environment. Use of profanity in class is not appropriate and will not be tolerated. 4. ZERO TOLERANCE CELL PHONE POLICY. Turn off your cell phones in class. Absolutely no cell phone usage during class time. If you are using your cell phone during class, the professor remains the right to have you leave the classroom premises, and/ or have you suspended for up to two days. Cell phone usage is considered a class disturbance and can result in suspension. 5. No Head phones in Class 6. No Eating in Class 7. Children and Animals: Children and Animals are not allowed in the classroom for safety purposes ( other than registered dogs that help people with physical challenges).

3 A 100% - 90% B 89% - 80% C 79% - 70% D 69% - 60% F 59% - 0% E V A L U A T I O N A N D G R A D I N G 1. Execution: Judgments are made on the formal aspects of the student s work. Is the student demonstrating solid applications of drawing principles, composition, materials, texture, etc.? Does the student exhibit creativity and originality in the work? 2. Concept: Judgments are made on the idea, drawing theory, theme or message in the student s work. Is the student demonstrating an understanding of an artistic concept, or is the student conveying an interesting idea? 3. Effort: Judgments are made on the overall process, time and effort of the student. Did the student come to class on time, prepared, equipped with all required materials? Did the student turn in an art piece that was kept clean (not folded or dirty)? Was the student careful, deliberate and focused when working on the art piece? 4 Late policy on quiz, exam and critique days: If you are more than fifteen minutes late on a day a quiz is administered, you will not be able to take the quiz or make up for the quiz. If you are more than fifteen minutes late on a critique day, your project will not be part of the class critique. If you are more than fifteen minutes late on the final exam day, your project will not be part of the class critique, and you will receive a 10% grade reduction for the final exam project. In-class assignments: Homework assignments: Class participation: Final Exam: 60% of final class grade Sketchbook, portfolio, and all projects assigned during lecture time and executed in class (lab time) 15% of final class grade All projects done at home and to be turned in for a grade 10% of final class grade Attendance, participation in class discussions, participation in class and individual critiques 15% of final class grade (Project done for final exam grade)
