1 COURSE SYLLABUS Course Title: Fundamentals of Drawing Instructor: Aneta Urbanska Course Number: FC102 Quarter: Fall 2010 Section: MA Day/Time: Credit Value: 4.0 Room #: 318 TRS: 6:00-9:50pm - 1:00-4:50pm COURSE PREREQUISITES: None COURSE DESCRIPTION: Visual awareness will be expanded through the observation of the principles of light and the translation of three-dimensional form into two-dimensional drawings. The course advances from simple to complex forms and skill levels in construction. An understanding of line and perspective will be pursued. COURSE COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: Delineate component parts of perspective. Draw three-dimensional objects in one, two and three point perspective. Draw three-dimensional objects freehand. Utilize basic design principles to create well-balanced compositions. Use a variety of drawing tools. Compose relationships between figure and ground. Differentiate and demonstrate foreground, middle ground and background. Demonstrate the concept of keying values. Differentiate and depict the four basic lighting situations: overhead, front, back, and oblique lighting. Use value differences to model form. 2 Determination of Student s Grade: The grades and the on-time completion of all assignments. Failure to submit all required work will result in a significant grade reduction: for example, twelve projects were assigned. A solid B student submitted only ten of the twelve assignments. The resulting calculation would reduce the final grade to C-. In-class preparedness, demonstration of discipline in classroom activities and participation in critiques. The ability to demonstrate all of the course competencies. Failure to successfully demonstrate the course competencies will result in a failing grade for the course. CLASS POLICIES: Attendance Policy: Accumulated absenteeism that is equivalent to 4 class periods or more in a course may result in attendance failure. This equals 8 hours of absence in a four-hour per week course and 12 hours of absence in a six-hour per week course. The amount of time absent includes time missed due to arriving late to class, leaving class early, and for any classes missed during the add/drop period. Attendance is crucial to your success in this course. Absenteeism or inattention during lecture, lack of required supplies or reference material and poor classroom work habits may contribute to a significant grade reduction or failure of the course. Departmental Policy: Late Work/Tests Late projects are penalized one letter grade. Projects/assignments will be accepted up to one week after the due date and will receive a reduced letter grade. Projects/assignments received later than one week after the due date will be counted as a Zero. Makeup tests, critiques or quizzes are only available by instructor discretion. Appropriate Class Conduct: The student is expected to attend all classes on time and remain the full extent of each class session. The student is expected to demonstrate a professional work and design ethic. This involves the exercise of critical listening skills, participation in discussions and critiques, preparation in advance of the class, utilizing class time in a judicious manner, meeting all assigned due dates and excluding any form of plagiarism. Student projects and classroom conduct should reflect an attitude of courtesy toward others and observe professional decorum. Explicit sexual comments in the classroom or depictions in assignments may be offensive to fellow students, teachers or prospective employers and therefore are inappropriate. Teachers may refuse display of inappropriate projects during class critiques and/or request students to redo such projects before grading. Teachers may also ask students engaging in offensive conversation to leave the classroom. Please refer to the student handbook if you need further clarification. You are expected to turn off cell phones and beepers in the classroom. If an emergency arises, leave the class quietly. It is the students responsibility to use OLS to audit classes. Test Policy: The Student must be in class to take the test. No student will be allowed to make up tests unless they have made prior arrangements with the instructor. Academic Honesty: Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and will result in appropriate disciplinary action; such action may include a zero for the assignment, failure of the course, or dismissal from school. Please note: If you wish to do new research/projects for more than one class at a time, you must have the permission of both instructors.

Day 2: 11/13/2010 Two-point (oblique) perspective & three-point perspective Draw five 2 point perspective transparent boxes in various positions. Three boxes in 2 pt. perspective using exact measures as written in handout.. Read from Absolute and Utter Beginner, Pages Day 3: 11/20/2010 Chiaroscuro: Value, light, shading, texture and aerial perspective Technique exercises in micro pen, graphite pencil and colored pencils. Sketching exercises using line and tone in a variety of techniques. Understanding how light defines form, types of lighting, and direction of light source. Naming the parts of value and light. Chiaroscuro Homework: Read from The complete guide to perspective, Pages and and complete exercises.( create or buy window viewer) Week 3 Day 1: 11/23/2010 Value: study of light and reflections Still life Value Study/Drape/Sphere, building values. Composition, cropping and sight measure. Homework: In sketchbook, (on Bristol paper) Create composition of three objects (minimum) on drape (fabric). Draw twice, first drawing render with graphite pencils in full value range and second with colored pencils. Due date 11/30/10. Sketchbook is due 11/30/2010. 5 Day 2: 12/02/2010 Perspective interiors - Perspective grids 1pt & 2pt Learning how to place objects in space Using one and two point perspective to define interior spaces. Scaling objects. Perspective and creating your own interior Homework: Finish layout room, create large window viewer and choose most interesting area of your composition. Transfer your composition to Bristol, if necessary resize. Bring for next class. Day 3: 12/04/2010 Interior Drawing Lab time: room Homework: Finish your room using markers and colored pencils. Due date 12/07/09. Week 5 Day 1: 12/07/09 Textures- rendering and creating different types of textures. Critique and peer evaluation Lab time Pen and Ink Drawing stippling, hatching and cross hatching techniques You need two sheets of Bristol paper 11"x14" (or larger) (1) smooth and (1) vellum. On each sheet mark border using masking tape. On vellum Bristol paper: draw and render composition of three different textures. Use view finder to pick most interesting part of your composition. Day 2: 12/09/09 Textures- rendering and creating different types of textures. Lab Time Part two: Copy your composition to smooth Bristol, light lines only and render using stippling, hatching and cross hatching. Homework: Review for Final exam (vocabulary, perspective). Day 3: 12/11/09 Textures- rendering and creating different types of textures. Lab Time Homework: Review for Final exam (vocabulary, perspective). Finish Project. Week 6 Day 3: 12/11/09 Quiz Final still life Day 3: 12/11/09 Still life, texture Continue still life. Day 3: 12/11/09 Critique and peer evaluation, still life.
