1 COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS Fall 2014 Syllabus Beginning Drawing 1 Art 124A Instructor: Deborah Jenkins deborah.jenkins@canyons.edu I am available after class or by appointment or in MENH 101 (M 8-11) MENH 201 MW 3:30-4:45 4:50-6:20 Course Description: The beginning course in drawing experiences emphasizing basic drawing techniques in a variety of media and compositional and design fundamentals. This class will consist of lecture, analysis and studio times. This is a studio art class and a large a portion of the class will be spent working. Studio time is valuable, so please make good use of it. Come to class prepared to work. There is no prerequisite. Course Objectives: Lecture: 1. Compare and contrast works of drawn art. 2. Distinguish and apply basic aesthetic theories and techniques specific to beginning drawing. 3. Evaluate and critique 2D works of art using appropriate beginning drawing terminology. Lab: 1. Demonstrate the proper use of drawing materials. 2. Demonstrate various approaches to perspective drawing, including one and tow-point perspective as well as measuring and sighting techniques. 3. Incorporate the principles of composition to create and manipulate pictorial space. 4. Use drawing materials to render three-dimensional space on a two dimensional surface. Course Student Learning Outcomes: Lecture: Evaluate drawing techniques using appropriate beginning drawing terminology. Lab: Develop drawings from conception to completion applying beginning drawing techniques. Required Texts/Readings: There is no text for this class. Class Activities: Drawing, Studio work, lectures and demos, visual presentations, critiques and field trips Critiques Critiques are informal discussions on each student s progress while developing projects in class. We will have group critiques for all projects. All students must be present and participate in-group critiques. 1. All work should be dated and signed on reverse. 2. Work executed entirely outside of class will not be accepted for critique. 3. All work should be retained by students (flat, not rolled) for final portfolio presentation - discard nothing Attendance: Attendance is mandatory

2 Class begins at the scheduled class time and I will take roll at that time. Avoid excessive tardiness, early departures and lack of supplies. If you arrive late it is your responsibility to let me know you are present. Students are responsible for completing any work missed during their absence. I may make adjustments and changes to the class schedule so I recommend that you exchange contact information with your fellow classmates. It is your responsibility to be informed about materials, class schedule, assignments and due dates. If you miss an assignment done during class time you cannot make it up If you have any special needs in order to participate in this course please let me know by either speaking with me personally or through a counselor by the end of the first week. Every effort will be made to help you achieve success! Assignments/Homework/Sketchbook: There will be approximately 15 projects. Each project will be graded on a total of 100 points, and will count equally toward your final grade. One in class assignment will be graded each week. All class assignments must be kept throughout the semester; they will become part of your final portfolio. No excuses regarding lost or destroyed artwork will be accepted. It is better to turn in something partially finished than nothing at all. There is a significant amount of homework in this class, and in class projects are often assigned to be finished as homework. You must have available at least 6 hours of work time outside of class per week. Make sure that you have this time available in your schedule. The sketchbook/journal has several purposes, it is used to take notes in class, is used as a place to practice techniques learned in class and a place to store and gather ideas. All work is due on assigned date at the beginning of class. Late work will not be accepted. Grading/Evaluation: Your course grade will be based on: 1. Understanding and application of concepts taught in class 2. Aesthetic merit, inventiveness and effort demonstrated in your work 3. The physical condition of the work when turned in 4. Your ability to successfully complete the assignments on time 5. Work ethic in class 6. Participation and attendance in critiques Grading: 15 projects (100 point each) In class work (100 point each) Sketchbook graded 2 times during the semester (100 points each) Portfolio, presentation of your work (100 points)

3 Grading elements: Excellent 90%- 100% Good 80%- 89% Average 70%- 79% Poor 60%- 69% Not college level 0%- 59% Met assignment objectives Creativity: critical thinking and problem solving, response to project lesson Creativity: effective use of media Craftsmanship Completion. Artwork feels complete. Overall project grade Classroom Behavior: -Everyone is expected to be polite & civil to one another. -No Disruptive behavior -Store all of your bags, art bins, portfolios etc. under the table. Keep walkway areas between benches and rows clear. -No laptops, recording devices or ipods may be used in this class. -Turn off all cell phones during class time. If there is an emergency that requires your leaving either of these on please let me know ahead of time. -No texting during class, if I see you texting I will ask you to leave -You are expected to clean up after yourself and to help put away still life materials at the end of class. -You are expected to take part in class critiques. -Coming to class without materials to work with and sitting through class projects without working is not acceptable. -Talking during studio time should be kept to a minimum. Plagiarism: Plagiarism, an unlawful act that is designed as the misrepresentation of the ideas or work of another as one's own, will not be tolerated in College of the Canyons. At the discretion of the Professor, plagiarism will be punishable either by an F for the assignment or an F in the course. 5 (acceptable papers: Canson, Ingres or Mi Teintes, Strathmore charcoal) DRAWING JOURNAL: Hard Cover Sketch book 9x12" or similar size CHARCOAL: Vine charcoal, soft (hard, medium, soft) Charcoal sticks, 3-4 sticks (hard, medium, soft) Conte crayons white, brown, and sepia Soft pastels (not oil pastels) Chamois Stump, Fixative GRAPHITE: Pencils: 6B, 4B, 2B HB, 2H, 4H, 6H (My favorite Tombow-mono 2B, HB) Graphite stick in 2B or 4B or 6B Pencil sharpener and or utility knife ERASERS: Kneaded eraser, gummed, white plastic INKS & PENS & BRUSHES: Speedball (or similar) Penholder and nibs Bamboo brush (#6) medium or large size A variety of marking pens, roller black ball pen (sharpie, micron-pens, felt tip) OTHER MATERIALS: Aluminum or steel ruler, 24 inches or longer One plastic drafting angle 30/60 Colored pencils Drawing Board 23x26" and clips 1 roll drafting tape Artist box, or fishing tackle box Portfolio, 23x31 inches or larger (optional but strongly recommended for storing) Roll of tracing paper (to cover work) *Be prepared to purchase additional supplies as instructed or as needed.
