1 SEMESTER AT SEA COURSE SYLLABUS Fall 2012 Discipline: Studio Art ARTS 1710: Introduction to Painting at Sea Lower Division Faculty Name: Faye A. Serio Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing COURSE DESCRIPTION Designed for beginning painters, the course will introduce students to color theory, color mixing, and color application. Its aim is to improve observational skills in both drawing and painting. Students will learn how to create successful compositions by experimenting with texture, form, space, and motion in order to draw the viewer s eye. While at sea, students will investigate the painting techniques, the styles, and the subject interpretation of the different countries and cultures on our journey and translate this into various subject matter including landscapes, still-lifes and portraits. It should be noted that students will be often expected to spend two to four hours working outside of class & I will arrange out-of-class time for extra supervised studio sessions. While on land, students will collect source materials for projects and keep personal journals that include painted and written entries reflecting on observations about topics discussed in class. Since the emphasis of the class is on painting, students should already have proficiency in drawing. A Field Lab is scheduled for Antwerp on Saturday, September 15, the day of departure. COURSE OBJECTIVES Students can expect to: Apply drawing skills and eye-hand coordination to the new medium of painting Learn different painting techniques Experiment with styles, materials, and genre associated with different cultures Create personal journals which integrate observations and exploration of materials Become comfortable responding to and critiquing art Form an understanding of theory and terminology associated with drawing and painting REQUIRED TEXTBOOK A list of required supplies is at the end of the syllabus. Please be sure to purchase supplies before arriving to the ship. 1

2 TOPICAL OUTLINE OF COURSE Prior to arrival in ports we will talk about what to look for, what to collect, and what to photograph. The class will be doing a recycling/painting/group project during the long stretch at sea after South Africa; you ll be collecting things starting in Ireland. You ll also need to print photos while in ports. 1. Discussions of the class objectives and info sheets Slide introduction to include examples of various techniques and medium Homework: 1 hour series of self-portraits experimenting with different medium Bring black watercolor, brushes, paper, pen, palette, and water container to class 2. Informal critique and continue reinforcement of observation drawing skills Class: Drawing practice with pen, paint and brush Homework: Series of 3 works: a. Gesture b. From Gesture to contour c. Gesture, contour, tones. Bring supplies and black & white detailed, realistic image 3. Wax resist: drawing + painting Class: Wax resist painting Discussion of Ireland, England, and Belgium; info about the Field Lab in Antwerp Homework: 1. A wax-resist painting on your own from one of your sources. Try for different tones. 2.Grid paper into 4 sections using painter s tape and bring black paint and brushes, etc. Collect materials while in ports and work on journal in each port 4. Black and White practice Class: Painting techniques: wet on dry, wet-on-wet, dry brush. Experiments with translucencies, opacities and blending. Homework: Exercise: 1.Rule two lines on paper using painter s tape keeping 2-3 inches between. 2. Practice smooth blending from paper white to black. Repeat step 1. Now keep the values separated into 6 distinct values from paper white to black. Prepare for class 5. Use 1 of your B&W images. Lightly and accurately block out. *Portfolio handed in for critique next class 5. Work on Black and White Painting with 6 local values * Portfolio handed in for critique Class: Start another B&W painting to be completed outside class. Try a different technique Homework: * Journal handed in for critique next class 6. Journal Review and in-class work * Journal handed in for critique Homework: Bring imagery and supplies to class 7. Introduction to color Slides and discussion of terms and ideas Class and Homework: Color exercises: Color wheel, primary, secondary, tertiary, complimentary, monochromatic, hue, saturation, tint, shade. Finish exercises. Bring in sources for local color painting and materials *Journal handed in for grading next class: Ireland, England, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, & Morocco. 2

Painting with local color a progressive series with color *Journal handed in for grading Class: Start a series of paintings: from linear, to linear + flat color, to linear + blended Experiment with translucent and opaque paint application Homework: Finish work from today; try another on your own; and bring materials for creating texture, imprints, stencils, glue, paper, etc., tape. Bring in color landscape prints Bring color sources to class for impressionistic and atmospheric experiments 9. Watercolor technique exercises and experiments Class and Homework: Dry brush, wet brush, texture, imprints, stencils, salt resist, etc. * Portfolio handed in for grading next class 10. Experimentations with color * Portfolio handed in for grading Homework: Finish the project, collect mark making materials, and prep and grid paper for next class. Select a few possible color images Landscape, Seascape, or detailed subject. The images should be very in high quality, well focused, detailed and with many colors. 11. Critique and Continue Watercolor painting Class: Start another series using a different color source; experiment with different techniques Homework: Finish work from today; bring acrylics and sources to next class. Landscape, Seascape, or detailed subject. The images should be very in high quality, well focused, detailed and with many colors. No animals and no people 12. Introduction to Acrylic: Similarities and differences between watercolor and acrylic Class: Acrylic experiments and color matching exercises and prepare paper for acrylic painting Select an image for the acrylic painting Homework: Finish the exercises and start the acrylic painting. Bring ideas for the group project 13. Prep work for the group /color project Class: Class decision as to the project subject; groups assigned Homework: Work on the project and * Journal handed in for critique next class 14. Continue work in class and with your group outside class * Journal handed in for critique 15. Continue work in class and with your group outside class Each group will prepare a text panel about its work. This will be displayed with the project *Portfolio handed in for critique next class 16. Hang the projects * Portfolio handed in for critique Homework: Collect and bring in lots of material from South American ports to be incorporated into a painting with your choice of subject. You and I will decide on the subject based upon these images. 17. Catch up day and get the ok for your painting---either acrylic or watercolor. 3

Class discussion of each person s final project ideas and in class work 22. In-class work and hanging artwork Finals Day Portfolio handed in FIELD LAB and FIELD JOURNAL: The field lab and journal are integral elements of the course. The field lab is scheduled for Antwerp on Saturday, September 15; we will tour Antwerp s cathedral, Rubenshuis, the Mayer van den Bergh museum, city squares and also draw, paint, and shoot photos for future projects. The day s work will be incorporated into the continuing field journal which will represent each country. Illustrations may be created with different mediums and techniques; writing, captions, poetry, or conversations may describe the port, the city, the history, the time of day, feelings, the weather, etc. Between 4-6 pages of entries (at least 1 ½ hours outside of class) should be spent per port. Also while on land, students will print photos and collect postcards, interesting objects, fabrics, ticket stubs, posters, coins, newspapers, postcards since much of the semester s work will be based on these sources. METHOD OF EVALUATION: Because this is an introductory painting class, grades are based upon effort and willingness to develop skills, and 35% = Field Lab + Field Journal Critiques will occur after many ports; grades will be given twice and averaged. Journals will be handed in twice for feedback and twice for grades Grades will be based on creativity, effort, and quality of 60% = Projects, homework, and exercise grades Portfolios will be handed in twice for feedback and twice for grades; grades will be averaged. Grades will be based on amount of effort, creativity according to specific assignments, and completion of exercises and projects on 5% = Participation/Preparation Grades will be based on class preparation, participation in critiques and discussions These are minimum course requirements in order to pass the course. Completing all that is scheduled 4

5 in the syllabus on time insures a passing grade of a 2.0. (Just completing the work will not insure a 4.0.) Attendance is expected & taken at the beginning of class; absences are reported to the registrar s office and will affect your final grade. Please don t be late. Sleeping in class = an absence. Supplies List: THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIES SHOULD BE BROUGHT ON BOARD BY STUDENTS (THESE WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE ART KIT AT THE BOOKSTORE): Bring interesting original 4x6 or 5x7 black and white and color photographs of landscapes and detailed close-ups from your campus, your hometown, or your recent travels. Avoid photos with people and animals. Collect small objects that could be drawn or incorporated into works and journals. (ticket stubs, labels, threads, buttons, fabric scraps, different types of papers, stencils, magazines, etc.) Hardware, grocery, dollar store, bookstore supplies: 1 roll painter s ½ inch A small quart size plastic container with a tight lid and a plastic cup (could be a yogurt cup) 1-2 Glue sticks or rubber cement 2 inexpensive fine-point permanent black pens (Sharpie, Uni-ball, or something comparable) Old work shirt and a couple of rags 2 sponges kitchen sponges are fine A paint palette with an area for mixing colors Small manual pencil sharpener Roll of paper towels THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIES ARE OFFERED AS A KIT BY THE UVA BOOKSTORE OR STUDENTS CAN GATHER THEM INDEPENDENTLY: Sharp scissors and a x-acto knife Art Supplies: Check on line at Utrecht, Dick Blick, Pearl Paint, Daniel Smith, or others If you already have some supplies that are similar substitute them for ones listed, but the specific paint colors are very important. Watch for sales at these sites. 3-4 inexpensive but good quality brushes for acrylic or watercolor paint or an inexpensive set Bristle brushes not foam. It s not necessary to buy expensive natural bristled brushes. Vary the size = 1 inch, half inch and less. Vary the shape = a point for detail and a flat chisel for washes The length of the handle is not important. Companies have their own brands in sets and often have terrific sales. 2 Pencils---one # 2, one # 4B Acrylic Paints: Basic 6-color set with 2 oz. of yellow, red, blue, green, black & white. Supplement with a 2 oz. Burnt Sienna and another 2 oz. white 5

6 Or 2 ounces of each of the following Brilliant Green, Cadmium Yellow Medium or Hansa Yellow Light, Mars or Ivory Black, Phthalo Blue, Cadmium Red Medium, Cobalt Blue or Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna AND 5 ounces of Titanium White Watercolor set such as Goldfaber, Pelikan, Cotman, Yarka, Reeves Choose one that has at least 14 colors but compare prices. Either blocks or tubes 1 Watercolor paper pad or a block 9 x12, or 10 x 14 Cold Press 140 lb. Strathmore or Arches; you ll need 24 to 30 sheets of paper. Multi-purpose drawing pad (not 50 sheets of 9 x 12 or 24 sheets of 11 x 14 Acid-free, heavy-weight (@ 80 lb.), medium surface for dry media, pen, ink, and light washes. Small spiral sketchbook for your 5 ½ x 50 sheets 6
