1 Art 327 Representational Painting T/R 8-10:45am Professor Samantha Fields Office Hours: M/W 5:00-6:30, call advisement to make an appointment. Course website: canvas.csun.edu SP18 Description: This painting course will focus on the following student learning outcomes: Students will learn historical styles of representational painting. Students will expand upon techniques learned in Art 227, including: Brushwork Surface preparation Underpainting Scaling, Composition, Value, Color mixing and matching Students will learn advanced critique skills. Through a series of four main projects, you will develop your painting skills in relation to IMAGE and REPRESENTATION. From realism to image based abstraction, we will explore the use of representational imagery in relation to various styles and modalities of painting. Grading: The following graded projects will be averaged at the end of the semester to determine your grade. Alla Prima Portrait from Life (100 points) Grisaille Self Portrait (100 Points) Tell me a Story: Narrative Painting (100 points) Disjunctive Narrative (100 points) Sketchbook (100 points) TOTAL: 500 points Attendance & Critiques This is an intermediate course. It requires extensive work outside of class, so I seldom assign homework. You should consider working on your painting outside of class as an ongoing homework assignment, as well as image collecting and compositional sketching. You must attend class sessions and may also use the studio during open lab time. (TBA) Lectures, critiques and demos cannot be made up. Critiques are REQUIRED. Your project grade will be docked by 10% if you miss a critique. (Which means your highest possible grade will be 90%) You may make up two approved studio days during lab hours. Some classes are not eligible for make up labs (Alla Prima Portraits). LABS ARE NOT AN A SUBSITUTE FOR CLASS TIME. You may be absent twice. On the third absence, your grade will be reduced by one letter grade. Good rule of thumb: Come to class. Other: Cell phone ringers are to be turned off during class. If you wear headphones, do so with only one ear bud so that you can hear me when I address the class. No food in the studio please! It seems silly to put this in a syllabus, but pick up your trash. We have one PPM employee assigned to the whole department.he doesn t need to pick your garbage up off the floor and neither do I. 1

You will complete an oil portrait of a classmate, in one sitting, on cardboard. This is a one-week project. Students will be paired, alternately modeling and painting, you will spend one day modeling, and one day painting. Grisaille Self Portrait Materials and Equipment: Two versions of the SAME photograph of yourself, one in monotone and one in color. 18 X 24 prepared canvas, acrylic panting supplies (see master list), sketchbook. You will make a self-portrait painting using the grisaille technique on an 18 X 24 canvas. You may use a pre-stretched canvas, or you may prepare your own if you know how. This painting will be made in acrylic paint using a photographic source. The entire painting will consist of a monotone under painting with primarily transparent glazes on top to create color. Tell Me A Story: Narrative Painting Materials and Equipment: EITHER oil or acrylic painting supplies (see master list). A variety of source images that detail all items/places/people/things that will be in your painting. CANVAS: your choice, but no smaller 4
5 than 36 in any direction, and it must be stretched and gessoed yourself. I will demo this in class. Sketchbook. For this project, you will create a narrative painting that tells a story using recognizable, representational space. It does not have to tell the ENTIRE story, think of it as a scene that may lead to another scene. We will cover narrative structure in the lecture, so that you can pinpoint how you want to plan your painting. This painting will require the active use of source images, which may be culled from magazines, your own photographic archives, or created photographically for this project. You should choose canvas size based on your composition, not the other way around. Maybe your composition is long and narrow? A perfect square? Vertical and narrow, or maybe it s the same proportions as a movie screen or TV. The scale and proportion of this painting is directly related to the scene you portray. Tell Me A Story: Disjunctive Narrative Materials and Equipment: EITHER oil or acrylic painting supplies (see master list). A variety of source images that detail all images that will be in your painting. CANVAS: your choice, but no smaller than 36 in any direction. and it must be stretched and gessoed yourself. I will demo this in class. Sketchbook. For this project, you will create a painting that tells a story in a non-linear, non-representational spatial construct. Images might float, sizes may be manipulated, images can overlap in space and use different panting strategies. Realism and abstraction can co-exist in the same metaphorical space. I highly recommend using collage techniques, or photoshop design your composition, although in painting, sometimes the best planning must be laid aside as the work demands.in this project, part of what you will learn is how to balance these various approaches! 5
