1 ART 251-STUDIO PAINTING RED DEER COLLEGE FALL 2015 Instructor: James Trevelyan Contact: office: 2915 A office hours: Mondays- 12-2pm, Thursdays-10-12am Class times; WEDNESDAY, 8:30-11:20-, 12:30-3:20 pm Location: 2926B COURSE DESCRIPTION: (3.000 credit hours, lecture, lab COURSE DESCRIPTION: (3 credits- 3 hrs lecture/ 3 hrs lab) Two Dimensional Studies; Painting 1 An introductory course to studio painting in both water and oil based media. The objective of this course is to develop the basic technical ability of the student. Emphasis will be initially placed on basic perceptual rendering, in both acrylics and oils, progressing to more challenging creative problem solving assignments. 2 Changes to the Course Outline: Changes to the course outline will be made with the consent of the course instructor and students. Changes will be reviewed by the Associate Dean for consistency with College policies. ATTENDANCE: Attendance is mandatory as each class will present new material and vital instructor contact. Lack of attendance may impact the students ability to successfully complete the course. STUDENT S RESPONSIBILITIES: According to the Red Deer College Students Rights and Responsibilities Policy, all students have a responsibility: to attend and be prepared for all scheduled learning activities. In the event that students are absent, assume full responsibility for knowledge of the material covered including assignments. The student will purchase the necessary materials, attend all classes and critiques, as well as meet the timelines of due projects, observe all directives regarding the safe and proper conduct of studio use, [ie; cleaning up after class, storage of work, disposal of solvents and the maintenance of studio equipment-(easels, sinks, tables etc.)]. The student is to be aware that others will use the studio after themselves. It is also expected that the student make time after class hours (evenings and between other classes) to work on assignments as class time will often be spent on production, slide lectures, discussions. This course may be eligible for Prior Learning Assessment. Students should refer to the RDC College Calendar for a list of excluded courses. Classroom Learning Resources may be available to students in alternative formats. Students should be aware that Personal Counseling, Career, Learning and Disability Services are provided by RDC. Inquire about locations at Information Desk. It is the student s responsibility to discuss their specific learning needs with the appropriate service provider. It is the student s responsibility to be familiar with the information contained in the Course Outline and to clarify ant areas of concern with the instructor. Students should refer to the Appeals: Formal Policy, Appeals: Informal Resolution Policy and Student Misconduct: Academic and Non-Academic Policy should they have any questions or concerns about the Course Outline that cannot be resolved with the instructor. EVALUATION: The student will be evaluated on the timely completion of regular projects that demonstrate a progressive facility with the particular media concerned and an understanding of the concepts and parameters of each assignment. There will be a midterm portfolio review (around the 22 of Oct) and a final portfolio due the last day of class (Dec.04). The grade for each will be collated for the final grade.

3 Attendance, studio maintenance and participation in group critiques is particularly important and will also be calculated into the grade. Work must be completed for the critiques or marks will be affected!! Critiques are meant to be constructive so the sharing of experiences is a valuable component of this course. The complete RDC policy is available at: ses_policy.pdf SAFETY: Art studios contain equipment, material and tools, which could be hazardous if used improperly. The instructor and/or technician of each studio course will conduct safety demonstrations for these potentially hazardous items. Instructions and procedures for the proper use of hazardous equipment and materials will be supplied to each student in the form of handouts or demonstrations and through posted instructions. Each student is required to abide by these instructions and procedures. As this is a multi use studio, it is vital that students clean up after themselves and do what they can to keep the studio tidy. Failure to do so may also be reflected in assessment. STUDIO ACCESS Please refer to the RDC Visual Art Studio Policy and Procedures for details regarding after hours access and general studio conduct. The painting studio is the one of the places within the department which is used by many students at every level. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that the studio is kept clean. Please clean your workspace and return all easels, tables, and chairs before you leave. If you are unsure about the proper use of any tool, equipment, or material, please ask the instructor or the technician for assistance The storage, preparation, and/or consumption of food is strictly prohibited in all studio areas. Any projects that require the preparation or consumption of food must be cleared with your instructor and must take place outside of studio areas. The Patch, Forum, and 2nd Floor Art Centre Link all provide access to microwaves and seating areas suitable for eating. Shop clothing is not permitted in any food services area on campus. Material Fee: $ This will go to cover materials to be used in class. ie: stretcher frames and painting boards

5 ART 251 STUDIO PAINTING MATERIALS LIST (stuff ya Otter get) PAINTS 1- set of Acrylics red- Quinacridone, Cadmium red light yellow- primary, lemon or azo blue-both Ultramarine and Pthalo Dioxazine Purple Burnt Umber Titanium White (large tube 5oz or larger) acrylic matte medium 1-set oils red-cadmium Red Deep yellow- Lemon blue- Ultramarine and Pthalo Burnt Umber Titanium White (large tube) oil painting medium- Walnut Alkyd Painting Medium is a good one BRUSHES one set of water based- rounds and flats various sizes (Taklon or Nylon) one set oil based- rounds and flats various sizes (Hogs Bristle etc..) or- one set of all paints brushes- can be used for both media large priming brush- 3-4 House paint brush (see attached guide) GESSO (lots of it)- Acrylic Primer (House paint) works as well OTHER MATERIALS palette knives masking tape- Green painters tape, Frog Tape Xacto knife (band aids)- plastic mixing containers, large lids, plastic container for solvent painting clothes- coveralls, apron etc.
