1 1 of 5 1/10/ :38 AM Syllabus: Studio Painting Continuing Education CE*1616C*01 Alexis Granwell, agranwell@uarts.edu Course Description Working from the figure, still life and invented forms, students explore painting materials, techniques and concepts on an individualized level. Learn the basics of color mixing, application techniques and pictorial composition and drawing, with an emphasis on perceptual painting. Students may choose to work in acrylic or oil as they paint still life setups and live models. Note: This course is only offered during the spring semester. Course Objective Painting I is an introduction to the handling of paint as a medium. We will use color to define space, form and light. First, we will discuss color theory. This will involve exercises with the theories of additive and subtractive color and color mixing. Also, we will discuss pigments and their characteristics, contrast of hue, value and saturation. We will learn the importance of studio safety and how to protect ourselves against the toxicity of paint and paint mediums. We will learn the technical aspects of painting such as pigment, medium, solvent, preparing canvas and paint handling. We will learn how to construct the pictorial field by focusing on figure and ground relationships, volume and mass, light and volume, edges and contour and spatial strategies. In addition, we will focus on the relationship between formal issues and content. There will be discussions of how concept relates to our studio practice, conceptual thinking, formal issues and art history. This class requires a commitment to the studio practice both inside and outside of class. Studio Policies Please turn off cell phones before you enter the classroom. No eating in the studio. No personal audio devices. Clean up before leaving class. You are responsible for your own work and materials. Attendance Punctuality and attendance is mandatory for each class. New concepts will be introduced weekly so attendance is very important. Learning takes place through lectures, demonstrations, one on one discussions and class critiques. Each class is designed to build on sequence to the previous one. Critiques Critiques are focused opportunities to share insights, verbalize intentions and to assist each other in one s development. It is also a time to practice visual vocabulary as well as articulate your ideas. The critique process is meant to help each person understand the strengths and weaknesses in his/ her work. Critiques in a studio class are as important as exams in a lecture course. Attendance is critical and required. Sketchbook The sketchbook can also be used to experiment, practice exercises from class, or research ideas for projects. The sketchbook is a visual journal, so try and record all of your ideas.
