Flores D219 Fall Contact information Class Info enflores@bhcc.mass.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION Watercolor Painting 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of painting with watercolor and mediums. Working from observation, students will gain the basic skills necessary to control the value, color, texture and composition of the paintings they create. They will develop visual problem solving skills and critical vocabulary through group critiques and individual meetings. This course will facilitate a basic understanding of how to build a personalized, sustainable painting practice. Prerequisite: Writing Skills II (ENG095) and Foundations of Mathematics / Pre-algebra (MAT093 This course meets General Education Humanities Requirements AREA 6 In this requirement area, the student will explore the dimensions of the human intellect and imagination and develop an informed appreciation of the diverse modes of creative expression. Students will learn how people have come to understand and express artistic, esthetic, moral, spiritual and philosophical dimensions of the human condition GENERAL EDUCATION OUTCOMES Students are able to interpret, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information from multiple sources in a logical and coherent manner. Students are able to approach writing as a process and to write coherent, well-developed, effectively proofread essays, research papers, arguments, and critical analyses while using sources responsibly. Students are able to explore the dimensions of the human intellect and imagination and develop an informed appreciation of the diverse modes of creative expression. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES/ OUTCOMES Students will be able to: Identify, define, and understand the formal elements of art and design. Demonstrate the ability to produce and present finished works of exhibition quality. Produce and critique projects that coordinate descriptive and expressive possibilities of course media. Select and verify course media and techniques in completed projects. COST INFORMATION REQUIRED MATERIALS: Each student is Watercolor Paint I prefer to use Professional Water colors with brands like Winsor Newton, Senellier, however you may choose whatever ESTIMATED COST OF MATERIALS: Art Supply stores Some stores may have discount coupons so take

You can also find brushes in an assorted packet but on this list are the essentials. POLICY AGAINST HARASSMENT The College is committed to providing an educational environment that is free of any kind of unlawful harassment. ATTENDANCE POLICY Watercolor Painting 1 is a studio course and the majority of the work is done during class as well as demonstrated by the Professor. Therefore, class attendance is mandatory. Students are allowed two absences per semester. These are for sick days, personal days, doctors appointments and emergencies. Doctor s notes will not extend the number of absences allowed. Three absences will lower the mark by 1 2 letter grade. Four absences will lower it by one full grade. More than four unexcused absences will result in failure of the course. During absences, students are entirely responsible for assignments given and any distributed material. All homework will be graded at mid-term and final portfolio critiques. All in class work will be accepted up to 1 week late and then be docked one point each day after. Please me if you are absent. You may also get the information you missed from the class website Tardiness will be handled on an individual basis, but if you are tardy to class more than three times, two percentage points will be deducted from your final grade for every day beyond three that you are late. If you are tardy 5 times it will count as 1 absence. If you are tardy be respectful of other students, we will begin most classes with group critiques so enter quietly.

Taking credit for the work done by another person without proper citation is considered plagiarism. Knowingly giving, receiving, using, or even attempting to give unauthorized assistance to another student inside or even outside the course is considered cheating. Other forms of cheating include copying to give, receive or used unauthorized assistance in copying or purchasing others work or arranging to do others work or have others do your work under a false name or identity. Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses, which may result in failure for the course, and or suspension, probation or dismissal from the College. Therefore, make every effort to adhere to the Honor System (where we do our own work and not partake in any academically unethical or illegal behaviors), and to be as original as possible in the submission of our work, remembering to cite any sources properly when submitting research content. Introduction: Review of syllabus packet. Introduce each other and talk about why we are in Watercolor 1. Introduce materials, terms and vocabulary; demonstrate materials. HW: You will be assigned an Artist to research, write a short description of the artist work and print an image of it to show the class. Purchase necessary materials for class. 2. Introduce vocabulary words and techniques. Painting from observation the artist will access the value of the object and duplicate it using varying layers of transparency in monochromatic tones. HW: Paint a 5x7min or larger landscape that utilizes atmospheric perspective. I will provide a handout for the image or you can find your own source. This can be painted in monochromatic values. Weeks 1 Sept 7th Weeks 2 Sept 14th

5 3.We will create a glazing guide, then working from observation or life will explore glazing techniques and discuss color theory. Hw: 2 Pages of Painting exercises in your notebook. 4.. Power Point on Abstraction in Painting. Create an abstract study using tissue paper as a source to paint from. Begin painting in class. HW: Finish abstract at home: explore with new techniques as well as varying values, washes and gradations. Look for a landscape source with the majority of it being sky, whether it is your own photographic source or an image found online have it printed in color minimum size 5x7 for next class. 5. The class will begin with a group critique of the abstract piece, this is a time to reflect on techniques and color/compositional/ value and other aesthetic choices you ve made via constructive criticism. The remainder of the time we will be working from photos sources of skies and landscapes. We will try different lifting techniques, gouache, wet into wet, as well as the masking fluid. HW: Paint a 5x7min or larger landscape/still life that utilizes washes/wet into wet techniques 6. We will be painting still Life: Warm and cool relationships will be emphasized. HW: Create your own complimentary color inspired painting 4x6 minimum. Any subject welcome. ALL assignments will be graded week 7, bring them in next week! 7. Continue working on in class painting while individual review of assignments or portfolio review will commence. HW Finnish Painting for Homework. You may use a photographic source or studio time. For studio time check the schedule on the wall, look for time when there are no other classes. You may set up the still life for yourself, please put back whatever you take out and be respectful. 8. Old Master Copy: An Old Master painting will be selected from the cannon of art history and analyzed formally. A reproduction will be made using transfer method; the artist will additionally interpret the piece from a contemporary perspective by adding/altering picture elements. Special attention will be given to the concept of working from photographs. HW: Finnish 50 of the painting for next class. Find a photo for your self portrait. Examples will be shown for ideas. 9. Finnish the Master copy. Begin a self portrait. The self-portrait project is an opportunity to consider the ability of painting to reflect inner states of mind in this regard considerations such as lighting, color theory, and allegorical/metaphorical content become important. Weeks 3 Sept 21st Week 4 Sept 28 th Week 5 Oct 5th Week 6 Oct. 12th Week 7 Oct. 19 th Mid Term Week 8 Oct. 26th Week 9 Nov. 2nd HW: Create a 4x6 painting that displays texture to your viewer in an interesting way.

6 10. Power Point on final assignment. Work in class: Finish self-portrait, Hw: Find a source for Final Painting- IF you cannot print your source it to me I will Print it for you!! Write a 1 page 2 paragraph paper(typed) on the subject you choose to paint, details will be provided via handout. 11. Sketching and color studies for final assignment. Begin final assignment HW: 4x6 painting of your choice, your subject is yours to choose 12. Final Project Continued HW: NO HOME WORK HAPPY THANKSGIVING! 13. Work in class on final assignment. Decide what is your focal point. HW: Work on Final Painting and Reflective Paper 14. This is the point in which you will work on the details! Individual Portfolio Review of all Homework.
