Painting assignments will determine approximately 80% of your grade. The remaining 20% will be determined by a written term paper worth 50 points. Each of the 10 class assignments is worth a maximum of 30 points. The total of assignments and exams equals 350 points. Your grade will be determined by the number of points you earn = A = B = C = D 206- Below = F Assignment Grading: Each assignment is worth 0-30 points. Each assignment has a due date. The point total you earn will depend on how well you satisfy the factors laid out for each assignment. All assignments tuned in late will suffer an automatic loss of 5 points. Any assignment submitted on time or early that does not earn the point total that you had hoped for may be re-done and resubmitted to improve your grade. GRADING The act of submitting a painting for grading is required, but does not, by itself, satisfy the parameters of any assignment including those listed as extra-credit. Each painting submitted is evaluated according to the specific requirements of each individual assignment. Additionally, every assignment from number 4 through 10 must meet standards established by the instruction accompanying the first three assignments/exercises. These standards are: Correct use of materials and appropriate subject to assignment

8 Color theory, mixing & technique of paint application Thoughtful compositional structure. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF PAINTING 6A STUDENTS In order to earn a grade (any grade except an 'F' in the course, individual students must take personal responsibility for the following issues: Read the assigned portions of the text in a timely manner. Take notes in class in order to aid study and learning. Complete all painting assignments. It is impossible to pass this course without completed assignments. Term paper counts for approximately 20% of your grade. Attend all classes and arrive on time. Lack of attendance will reduce your grade point total. Missing seven (7) classes unexcused will result in a grade of F. Always respond to the roll. Those who do not will be assigned an unexcused absence. Acquire your equipment and supplies according to the instructions and timelines. Practice outside of class. Once instruction is given, do not wait for class time before attempting to familiarize yourself with pencil and paper. If you become confused, need extra help, want to ask a question but don't what to ask or how to ask it, or if you need any other assistance, see me after class. Don't spend the entire semester confused. Help is available, but only if you ask! Class Policies About Class Rule: RESPECT - covers everything: respect yourself, others, and school property. Respecting others means no talking when someone else is talking: the instructor, a classmate or a guest speaker. It means NO CELL PHONES during class. If I can turn mine off for an hour, so can you - thanks! Note: texting during class is strictly forbidden. You will be asked to

9 leave and after the 3rd time you will have points deducted. Continued cell phone use may result in being dropped from class. Finally: Please clean up after yourself -your mom is not here to do it for you and the maintenance staff and instructor are not here to wait on you. Basically, if you bring it to class, take it with you when you leave! Attendance: Each unexcused absence automatically deducts 10 points from your grade total. Seven or more unexcused absences will earn a grade of 'F'. An excused absence is issued when the instructor is informed in advance (via telephone, message, or ) that you will miss class, and when you have completed the make-up assignment. Remember: If you have questions, you must ask them. If you need help, ask for it and you will receive assistance. Warning! Students may be ejected from the classroom and dropped from the course for reasons of classroom discipline such as, but not limited to: Cell phone use, excessive talking, noise making, inappropriate remarks, or harassment of other students. Resources BRUSHES AND CARE BRISTLE: Best quality comes from a strip across the backs of wild hogs in Chung King Province, China. Stiff and coarse with natural curve and V- shaped split end called flagged tip. Brushes formed with flags offer most spring, shape retention and control. Best for heavy oil and acrylic colors. CAMEL HAIR: Trade name for brushes of squirrel, goat, pony, bear, sheep. Or blend. Range greatly in softness, quality and cost. Actual camel hair is too woolly for brushes. KOLINSKY RED SABLE: Most valuable and expensive soft brush hair, coming for tails of mustela sibirica, a marten found in cold river valley of Siberia. Strength, thickness, spring and fine point all associated with kolinsky res sable. Makes the finest watercolor brush. RED SABLE: Soft brush hair coming from tails of Asiatic weasels a type of marten. Golden red in color, hair not as fine or springy as kolinsky red sable, about half as expensive. Makes good watercolor brushes. There are also synthetic brushes, some that are blended with sable, and some that are just synthetic. These brushes are usually less expensive and for student work are excellent values: these have enough spring and

10 toughness to push paint onto the paper. The total cost of brushes is dependent on how much one wants to spend. Usually brushes needed for this class will be less that $20 each. BRUSH CARE: 1. Don t use strong paint solvent, lacquer thinner, shellac remover, or acetone to clean brushes. These chemicals can dissolve some to the setting compounds which hold the hairs in place. 2. Don t soak your brushes overnight resting on their ends. This can bend the hairs or bristles permanently out of shape. It can also cause wooded handles to swell and loosen the ferrule. 3. Don tuse the same brush for different painting media. 4. Don tuse a brush to mix oil and/or acrylics on your palette. Use a palette knife for this purpose. 5. When washing out a watercolor brush, sue a non-oil base soap. All soaps with scents contain oils. Oils will prevent the paint - which is water based - from adhering to the brush. REMEMBER: A premium quality bush, properly cared for will last a lifetime. If you plan to continue painting, good quality brushes are an excellent investment. I still have some brushes from 35 years ago. Watercolor landscape:
