1 BASIC WATERCOLOR PAINTING Syllabus For Britton Falls Basic Watercolor Painting Workshop 2012 Class June 26, 27, 28, :30PM 3:30PM By Larry Hamilton home cell M a y 1 5, P a g e 1

2 Basic Watercolor Painting Workshop Audience: First time watercolor painters, those who attended last year s class, and/or those who have not painted watercolors for a long time. Course Objectives: Students should learn how to create watercolor paintings and develop, or improve, their understanding of the following: 1. Materials used for watercolor painting (Brushes, Paints, Paper) 2. Tools, techniques and special tips for creating successful watercolors 3. Basic theories that apply to all visual arts - as they are applied to watercolor painting a. Color theory (Intensity, Value, Hue) b. Design theory (Principles and Elements of Design) c. Composition theory (Putting it all together) Class Overview Each class will consist of some theory, some watercolor exercises related to the theory and the completion of one finished painting during each class. In addition, homework assignments will be given to practice certain painting techniques in preparation for the next class. We will be using handouts from Watercolor Techniques by Tony Couch (Couch, Watercolor Techniques, 1991) and some handouts from Watercolor: You Can Do It! (Couch, Watercolor: You Can Do It!, 1987). We will also be using some information on sketching and drawing from Cathy Johnson (Johnson, 1995) and from Robert Wade (Wade, 2002). 1 The class is scheduled for 3 days 3 hours each day. Date June 26, 27, 28, 2012, from 12:30PM 3:30PM Cost for the 3 day class, $160 for first-time painters (includes over $100 worth of materials). For repeat painters, who have their materials from last year, the cost will be $60 for the 3-days. Class fee is to be paid in advance. 3 We will reserve about 1/3 rd of class time for homework review, questions and practicing techniques; 1/3 rd of the class will be used for theory discussion and examples; and 1/3 rd of class time will be reserved to complete at least one painting each day. The following Student Materials (will be provided for each first-time student at the first class): 1. WC Paper Strathmore 140# Cold Press Watercolor Block 9 X sheets tubes of Grumbacher watercolor paints 3. Brushes a. Wonder white script liner size 4 b. Golden Taklon Round Size 12 c. Golden Taklon Round Size 8 d. Golden Taklon Round Size 4 e. Golden Taklon Flat ¼ inch Wash f. Golden Taklon Flat ½ inch Wash g. Golden Taklon Flat ¾ inch Wash 4. Plastic palette knife - Richeson s 2 Diamond 5. Painting Sponges set of 4 6. Spray Bottle (Spritzer) 7. Folding Plastic Palette & Mixing Tray to hold at least 19 colors 8. Magic rub eraser, kneaded eraser, HB pencil and razor blade 9. Two water containers - one for clean and one for dirty water /4 X 4 General Purpose Cellulose Sponge 11. Canvas Tote Bag 12. Workbook of information and practice exercises For repeat painters If you do not have some of the necessary materials from last year, I can order them for you when I order the materials for the first time students, but I will have to know what you need by June 7, Note: We are including a size 4 Round Brush and one additional tube of paint for this class which will be provided for repeat painters and the cost has been included in your fee. Repeat students will need to have the above materials for the class. Also, note that over 50% of the material in this class is new. The remainder of material is repeated from the 2011 class. Class Materials/Supplies (for everyone to use/share, as needed) 1. Sketching paper 9 X # sheets 2. Tracing paper 9 X sheets 3. Graphite transfer paper 18 X 24 1 per student (= 4-9 X 12 sheets) 4.
