2 LAST WEEK S PROJECT Loving Yourself: Surrealist Self-Portrait Clay Mask Worked individually and as a small group to understand our concept of Appreciation You finished your Viewpoint Mask Drawings either for homework or in class (Front, Right Side, & Left Side, Top, Back) in full color to know how you ll paint your mask Practiced drawing realistic facial proportions

3 TODAY S PROJECT Loving Yourself: Surrealist Self-Portrait Clay Mask You will learn about the Role of Drawing in 3D art, learn difference between Form & Function, learn the Rules of working with Clay, practice and apply clay sculpture techniques (4s, Score, Slip, Squish, Smooth) to begin the creation of your mask from a clay slab. You re goal today is to get the realistic facial proportions completed and then NEXT week we ll start transforming the face into a more surrealist form. TODAY!!! NEXT WEEK!

4 ROLE OF DRAWING IN 3D ART Why is Drawing Important to making 3D Art? Drawing is one of the first essential skills an artist learns in order to make art. Related to the creation of 3D Art, drawing is a way of planning how the final model (3D form) will look when complete from all sides. That is why artists draw their 3D artworks from various different viewpoints. EXAMPLE: An architect needs his blueprints in order to construct the building in full scale.

5 FORM VS FUNCTION What is Form? What is Function? Form Besides an Element of Art, it is the Appearance of an object. What does it look like? Function Purpose of an object. What is it supposed to do? Describe the Form of the masks above? What is their Function(s)?

6 FORM OF OUR MASKS What is the form of our masks? FOR THIS PROJECT The human face with a combination of surrealist images representing what you like and appreciate about yourself.

7 FUNCTION OF A MASK What is the function of a mask? Masks are as different in form (appearance) as they are in function (purpose). Many masks are associated with cultural ceremonies. In Egyptian culture, pharaohs wore death masks when they passed on to give the individual a face in the afterlife. Other masks were for parties, holidays, or for theater performances. Masks are also used for protection in certain sports and jobs.

17 RULES USING CLAY Clay seems to bring out the worst in some students. Rules are to be followed at ALL TIMES! 1. Clay is to stay on the tables. NO THROWING CLAY! No Airborne objects! 1. Clay tools are ONLY for clay, not for paper, clothing, skin, NOTHING ELSE. 1. Misuse of tools will result in an unfinished project. You will NOT be allowed to use the clay, tools, materials, or paint it. 3. Stay clean and neat. No patting people with clay dust covering hands. 4. When it s time for clean-up, each person at your table will have a job. Work together as a team.

21 DEMONSTRATIONS Hollowing out Clay When forming your clay mask, hollow certain parts out using the loopy tool to pull away from the clay. You ll want to hallow the nose, eyes, mouth, etc. Rule: If clay is thicker than your thumb, must hollow. Unable to reach the area to hollow: Poke holes deep into surface using needle tool being careful not to go all the way though.

22 CLAY CRAFTSMANSHIP Example of Good & Bad Sloppy Craftsmanship Visible Cracks Weak Joints (pieces popped off) Uneven edges (roller coasters) Not Hollowed correctly (exploded in kiln or pieces thicker than your thumb) Refined Craftsmanship Smooth, Even Edges & Trims Strong, Sturdy Joints No Cracks Properly Hollowed

23 PROJECT DIRECTIONS Loving Yourself: Surrealist Self-Portrait Clay Mask 1. Supply Managers pass out Mask Drawings 2. Cut Outline of Face Shape in Slab. 3. Create separate features of face (nose, eyes, lips, eyebrows, ears, hair, etc) 4. Attach features to face (remember proportion tips, use your ruler to measure) ALWAYS SCORE, SLIP, SQUISH, & SMOOTH to attach pieces of clay together! 5. HOLLOW out inside of mask where features were attached using a loop tool 6. Etch/Draw Fine Details on Clay (Textures, additional facial features, etc) w/ needle tool 7. Clean up is at 2pm, finished or unfinished.

24 PROJECT DIRECTIONS This is your goal today. To be completely done with the facial structure so that next week we can transform it!

25 CLAY CLEAN UP Each person will have a job. EVERYONE 1. TWO sprays with water bottle in plastic bag. 2. Place mask & features into bag with a wet paper towel. 3. Seal tightly, and place on cabinet shelf.

26 SUPPLY MANAGER CLAY CLEAN UP Each person will have a job. All Clay surfaces place on tray. Extra Clay back into the large bag at front table. Place photographs & sketches into 2 piles for collection of teacher. SINK MONITOR Organize tools back into container. Wash them thoroughly at sink in classroom or backroom. FLOOR SUPERVISOR Check for trash and clay pieces on the floor. Assist other students at table (as needed). TABLE CLEANER Use dust & brush pan to sweep table, then use damp sponge to wet table. Dry with a paper towel. GYM AT 2:20. Work fast, but still neat and clean.
