1 Learning Objectives In this workshop, you will learn how to: Complete a painting using traditional watercolor methods, enhanced by water-soluble graphite and water-soluble crayons. Practice techniques for undertones, preserving white areas, using misket and eliminating extraneous information. Workshop Description Watercolor is capable of creating unique effects not found with acrylic or oil. Having painted in watercolor for over thirty-seven years, it is a challenge to find new ways of using this medium. Solution: try something new & fun just because! Trying out a new substrate, different techniques or new tools will either improve my work or not, either way I am creating. The experimental time is refreshing - no deadlines, no critiques, no ambition for perfection, no failure. In my demonstration, the painting will evolve amid discussions of idea conception, use of sketches and value studies, my creative process, and choice of materials. Narration of the painting s progress will answer any how, when and why questions. By allowing colors to mix on the paper, the chemical reactions create surprises that will be modified, enhanced or eliminated with water-soluble graphite and water-soluble crayons. The end result, is a representational painting with an air of freshness. The workshop goal is to enjoy the wonderful effects of watercolor as you complete a painting using traditional watercolor methods enhanced by water-soluble graphite and water-soluble crayons. The workshop includes brief discussions, demonstrations, handouts, and abundant one- on-one instruction. A line drawing of the demonstrated painting will be available to transfer to watercolor paper. Demonstrations will guide artists in techniques and use of undertones, preserving white areas, using misket and eliminating extraneous information. Individual instruction will be given to artists as they work and complete their paintings.

2 Workshop Materials List Water-soluble graphite - 2B, 4B, 8B Water-soluble crayons - ochre, light blue, burnt sienna, purple, light olive green, periwinkle blue, black, golden yellow Pencil, kneaded eraser Arches watercolor paper - Your choice hot or cold pressed, 8X10 Watercolor Paints - Any professional watercolor brand (the paint quality is important, so avoid student grade paint). The list below will give you a very versatile palette...bring the colors you typically use. * denotes optional colors Neutral Yellow Red Blue Green Cadmium Yellow Hue or Cobalt Blue Leaf Green Hansa Yellow Titanium White or Gouch White Ultramarine Blue Yellow Ochre Burnt Sienna *Quinacridone Gold *Quinacridone Burnt Orange Alizarin Crimson or Rose Madder Cad. Red Med. or *Quinacridone Red Cerulean Blue Watercolor Brushes: Bring brushes you normally use, Natural hair, Synthetic, or Synthetic Blend: - Round: - size #4, 8 - Rigger or Liner - # 2, - Flat - 1/2 Palette: Your choice, plastic or porcelain Other items: Sturdy board - large enough to tape down your watercolor paper Plastic bags - for dirty paper towels Low-Tack Tape - use the blue painters tape, or green frog tape 1/2 or 3/4 Misket or Liquid Frisket - Your choice of brand Water Container - for rinsing brushes as you paint Paper Towels - to wipe brushes as you paint Electronics Camera, ipad (you are welcome to photograph, be courteous); notepad/pen - I will have handouts

3 Cheri C. Fry Biography and Work Samples Cheri C. Fry is a contemporary artist who paints equally in watercolor and oil. Her warm realism captures ordinary figures in a painterly way. Concentrating on design, texture, edges, contrast and values in both landscapes and figures, her paintings are inviting. By using charcoal studies to design and compose potential paintings a natural culling occurs, so the best studies become dynamic paintings. She finds endless inspiration in her birthplace, New Orleans; in south Louisiana art is in the rhythm of music, food and people. Years of study with local and national artists, combined with living in this unique art culture infuses Cheri with an energy that is felt in her paintings. Cheri has exhibited in regional, national and international art competitions, and has won numerous awards. She is an exhibiting and signature member of Louisiana Watercolor Society; an exhibiting member of the Oil Painters of America, Art Guild of Louisiana and a member of the National Watercolor Society. Her art is found in private and corporate collections in several states. Cheri is an art instructor teaching workshops and private students. In 2010, Cheri founded a healing art organization whose members host paint parties in children s hospitals in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and St. Jude Children s Hospital in Memphis. She earned a master s degree in Speech Pathology, and has been employed as a Speech Pathologist for 31 years. Denham Springs, Louisiana is home for Cheri, her husband, and two daughters.
