5 The Art of Fauna The materials used will depend on the individual student s preferences and the nature of the project. Students will be encouraged to try materials that they are not familiar with, and given personal instruction in the use of these materials, in order to broaden their experience. Supplies (students may choose from among the following list): Graphite pencils Colored pencils Compressed charcoal sticks Vine charcoal sticks Colored and/or black ink Dry pastels Oil pastels Water-soluble crayons Watercolor paint Acrylic paint Collage materials such as papers, found objects Supports (depending on media used): White paper Colored paper Stretched canvas Prepared panel Additional supplies as needed, depending on media used: Brushes Palette Drawing board Masking tape Scissors Water cups Paper towels Danforth Museum School Page 5
6 Watercolor 2 Watercolor tubes in the following colors: o Alizarin Crimson o Cadmium Red o Lemon Yellow o Cadmium Yellow o Ultramarine Blue o Cerulean Blue o Permanent Rose Recommended brand: Winsor-Newton Artists Watercolour Arches brand 140 lb. cold-press block, 11 x 14 Pad of cheap watercolor paper, 11 x 14 (for example, Strathmore brand) 2 watercolor brushes in synthetic sable: 3/8 round brush and ¾ flat brush Cheap small brush White plastic palette, as large as possible ( San Francisco palette is good) 2 large plastic cups (e.g. 32-oz. yogurt containers) Roll of white paper towels 2H drawing pencil Kneaded eraser Clear masking fluid Plastic wrap Danforth Museum School Page 6
7 Museum to Studio Students may choose their own art materials for this course, depending on personal preference. Possibilities for art supplies for the semester include: Graphite pencils Colored pencils Compressed charcoal sticks Vine charcoal sticks Colored and/or black ink Dry pastels Oil pastels Water-soluble crayons Watercolor paint Acrylic paint Image transfers Printing without a press (monotype, linoleum or wood blocks) Collage/assemblage using found materials SUPPORTS, depending on media used: White paper Colored paper Stretched canvas Prepared panel ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES, depending on media used: Brushes Wax paper or aluminum foil Masking tape Scissors Water cups Paper towels Danforth Museum School Page 7
8 Mixed Media Techniques The materials for this class will depend on the individual student s personal preferences and ideas for experimentation. Our first day of class will include a demonstration and practice session using a variety of wet and dry materials, alone and in combination. Feel free to bring in any and all of the following supplies on the first day of class, as well as other materials that you want to try and/or have experience with or interest in. You can also add to your inventory as the course goes on. MEDIA Graphite pencils of various types, erasers Colored pencils Colored markers Charcoal (powdered, compressed, vine), kneaded eraser, chamois cloth Ink (black and/or colored) and brush (mop-type) Dry pastels Oil pastels Watercolor paints (also brushes, water cup, palette, paper towels) Acrylic paints (also brushes, water cups, palette, paper towels) Linoleum block, cutting tools, water-based inks, barren or spoon, brayer OTHER Xeroxed images and acrylic gel medium (for image transfers) Found images or objects for collage or assemblage Adhesive for collage or assemblage Appropriate surfaces for your chosen materials, such as paper, stretched canvas or panel Danforth Museum School Page 8

They can be bought separately or in a 10 piece set). Chalk pastels White glue of rubber cement Pad of watercolor paper Brushes-synthetic 1 flat, 1/2 flat, 1 round and watercolor brush # 7 or # 8.
