1 1 Apparel, Educational Studies & Hospitality Management AMD 178 Fall 2015 Instructor: Archana Edmond Office: 28 MACKAY HALL Telephone: Office Hours: 4pm-5pm Mondays Course Description: Introduction to the elements and principles of design in fashion and apparel including skill development in fashion illustration, technical drawing, and fabric rendering using traditional media. Application of written and verbal presentations to communicate fashion and apparel design concepts. Credits: 3 Prerequisites: None Semesters Offered: F, S Meeting Times: Section 1-01:10pm - 03:00pm MacKay 313 Section 2-03:10pm - 05:00pm MacKay 313 Meeting Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays Instructional Method: Learning will occur in an interactive classroom environment, in which the instructor will present course information through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations. Students will be evaluated on the basis of presentation boards, sketching exercises, quizzes, a written designer report, a sketchbook and mini portfolio. The class will meet twice a week for two-hour time periods. Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course students will be able to: 1. Use and apply proper terminology in relation to apparel industry applications. 2. Demonstrate skills in layout composition, technical drawing, color rendering of apparel and textiles using traditional media. 3. Exhibit skills in creating technical flats to visually communicate the technical aspects of apparel construction. 4. Develop ease in sketching apparel and textiles by-hand. 5. Display an understanding of composition and layout for presentation boards. 6. Create presentation boards that may be inserted into a portfolio. 7. Initiate the development of a personal stylistic method of fashion illustration. 1

2 2 8. Communicate design ideas in both written and oral formats. 9. Develop and demonstrate skills in giving verbal feedback to peers. Course Policies: Academic Honesty - The academic work of all students must comply with University policies on academic honesty. Examples of academic misconduct are: Attempting to use unauthorized information in the taking of an exam; Submitting as one s own work, themes, reports, drawings, laboratory notes, computer programs or other products prepared by another person; Knowingly assisting another student in obtaining or using unauthorized materials; or Plagiarism. (Student Conduct Code, Section 4.2.1, p. 27) Attendance Success in this course requires attendance. Formal attendance will not be taken; however, as an emerging professional into the apparel industry it is expected you will attend class and fully participate in each class meeting. Accommodation of Special Needs - A request for accommodation should be presented to the instructor at least 10 business days before the date of the accommodation needed. Those seeking accommodations based on disabilities should obtain a Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) from the Disability Resources office ( ), which is located in Room 1076 of the Student Services Building. Assignments Late assignments will not be accepted. If you encounter extenuating circumstances please contact me within 6 hours of the projects due time. Electronic Devices - All usage of laptops or other similar devices must be approved by the instructor. All cell phones should be turned off and put away, or the instructor can ask the student to leave the classroom for the rest of the class period, in which case it will be counted as an absence. Classroom Courtesy Respect and care for the classroom and studio spaces are expected of each student. You are to leave the studio in better condition than you found it, so that all students have a positive experience using our studio and classroom spaces. You are expected to have the necessary materials and supplies for each meeting. Projects must be worked on in class, but some work will also need to be completed outside of class. Projects not worked on in class will not be accepted. You are encouraged to watch progress on projects of other class members and to share learning experience with others. 3 Overview of Assignments: Trend Analysis Design Board (100 points) Scenario: You work for a trendy design house as an assistant designer. Your job is to sell your peers at work (a.k.a. classmates) on the idea that a current trend in fashion is the hottest trend for the following year. The tool that you will use for your presentation is a trend board. Target Market Design Board (100 points) Scenario: You are a design assistant for a large-scale apparel manufacturer that has traditionally has been a sportswear manufacturer for women s separates. The company has decided to diversify and move into other markets. Your job is to define a new market for the company and present this information and a presentation board to the other designers. Technical Drawing Board (100 points) Scenario: You are a design assistant for an apparel manufacturer. Your job is to create a technical sketch of a pair of jeans and a shirt, then develop 4 additional variations of the jeans and the shirt. Color Rendered Fabric Swatches Board (100 points) Scenario: You are a design assistant for an apparel manufacturer. Your job is to render three fabric swatches (prints) in three different color ways. Historic to Contemporary Design Boards (100 points) Scenario: This season the company you are working for has decided to use a historic time period of clothing as the source of inspiration to add some variety to the line. Your job is to create illustrations of 3 ensembles for a mini line and technical sketches of each garment, inspired by a garment from a historical time period prior to Mini Design Line Boards (100 points) Scenario: You are a design assistant for an apparel manufacturer. Your job is to illustrate 3 ensembles for a defined target market. Your presentation will be used to help conceptualize a new line of apparel for your company and can be any target market. Designer Report (50 points) Each student will write a 3 to 6 page report investigating the aesthetic preferences of 2 professional fashion designers, using the elements & principles of design as criteria to critique her or his most recent collection. Sketch Book (50 points) Each student will develop a sketch book during the semester that includes fabric renderings, technical sketches of tops, technical sketches of bottoms, faces, croqui, and feet/shoes (in pairs). Pinterest Assignment (100 points) Each student will develop Pinterest boards to develop a digital portfolio of inspiration and aesthetic preferences. Digital Website Portfolio (100 points) Each student will compile all the presentation boards created during the semester into a portfolio case in the order listed: Trend Analysis Board, Target Market Board, Fabric Rendering Board, Technical Sketching Board, Historic to Contemporary Design Boards, and Mini Design Line Boards. Sketching Exercises 10 points each = 200 points) Each student will complete a series of in-class sketching exercises related to daily topics to allow for opportunities to develop skills in visual communication in apparel design. Quizzes 10 points each = 120 points) Twelve quizzes will be administered through Blackboard relating to topics discussed in class and course readings from the required textbooks. 3 3
