1 Colorado State University Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture LAND 240_Fundamentals of Landscape Design Process spring 2013 Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00pm 4:40pm, Shepardson 118 and the East Studio Professor Kelly Curl Emmanuel Didier Office: B104 NESB Office Hours: By appointment Course Description LAND (1 4 1), Prerequisite: LAND 230 Initiation of formal exploration of design elements, materials, and principles, and introduction of design process as a defensible methodology. Introduction This foundation studio will begin with basic design processes, exploration with various drawing/drafting mediums and techniques, and model making. The design process draws on your personal creativity to analyze, explore, experiment, create, draw, review, and construct. This Studio will later focus on traversing a specific site, initiating the design process of a new trail a trail that will extend, reveal, and catalyze new relationships and processes of this transformed nature. Students will be pioneers in the discovery of this new terrain, developing site based investigations that will be based on new ways of seeing, experiencing, and transforming landscape. Students will be using surveying methods of sectioning and triangulation, photography and plotting to reach a final Studio Design. 1 P age

2 Academic Goals Understand and experience the Design Process, and its relation to landscape architecture. Become comfortable with all drafting and drawing materials that will represent your design process and ideas. Understand fundamental design vocabulary, elements, and principles. Develop fundamental design communication skills in drawing, computing, speaking and writing to convey design intent. Course Requirements Attendance lasting the duration of the class period Participation in class Complete weekly assignments/projects in studio and on site Required Text Evaluation of Student Performance Grading Scale Catherine, Dee Form and Fabric in Landscape Architecture: A visual Introduction, New York: Spoon Press. The instructor will provide in class reviews of work in progress. We will occasionally have class pin ups and discussion of everyone s work. Outside reviewers and fellow students may be asked to critique your work. You are encouraged to discuss your work with others, keeping in mind that you are responsible for your product. The instructor will use her best professional judgment in evaluating each student s level of engagement, productivity and innovation in design through assignments and projects. GRADING SCALE A High level of engagement, productivity and innovation in design. B Adequate level of engagement, productivity and innovation in design. C Marginal though passable level of engagement and productivity. F Student is actively disengaged from the course. I Student s inability to complete requirements is unanticipated and beyond the student s control. (+/ ) of these letter grades will be considered LATE WORK This coursework builds on itself, and it is very important to keep up with your Studio assignments. Attendance Attendance lasts the duration of the class session. Because written and verbal instructions for new assignments will be given regularly, it is essential to be in class. If a student misses class (without a reasonable excuse) and therefore does not receive information about an assignment, he/she should get the information from a reliable classmate. 2 P age
