1 ARCH 2551 Course Syllabus Instructor: Ben Reavis Office Number: ARCH 203 Office Telephone Number: Address: Office Hours: By Appointment Course Number, Section Number, and Course Title: ARCH , BASIC DESIGN +DRAW Time and Place of Class Meetings: ARCH T TH - 8:00 am 11:50 am Description of Course Content: BASIC DESIGN AND DRAWING I (3-6) 5 hours credit. An introduction to design, design drawing, and color theory utilizing lectures and studio exercises. Twoand three-dimensional studio exercises develop a sensibility to design fundamentals and vocabulary. Emphasis on form, color, texture, and spatial determinants. Student Learning Outcomes: Assessment of student performance focuses on the development of verbal, writing, graphic and research skills. Critical thinking is emphasized in the ability to make a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of a building of limited program and size. Student work must demonstrate the ability to apply basic organizational, spatial and constructional principles to the conception and development of interior and exterior spaces, building elements and components. The use of precedents in design analysis of residential structures provide a coherent rational for the programmatic and design development in final architectural projects. Western and Non-Western traditions are introduced in basic design exercises in various ordering principles and selection of building precedents. Introduction of Accessibility provided in selected projects and final architectural project. This course is the first of two parts in the curriculum which provide an understanding of the fundamental of visual perception and the principles and systems of order that inform two and three-dimensional architectural composition. 4 Grading Policy: Late work will not be accepted Projects and assignments will be graded per the following schedule: Mark of Problem Point Value A 10 A- 9 B 8 B- 7 C+ 6 C 5 C- 4 D 3 D- 2 F 1 F- 0 Grading for this course will be divided into three parts. Design Exercises 25% Each design exercise will be assigned 2 grades. One for design ideas/comcept and the other for craftsmanship. Drawing Exercises 25% The drawing exercises will be completed in a parallel track to the design exercises. This will also include periodic checks on your sketchbook progress. Design Problems: 50% Design Problem I 20% Design Problem II 30% The grades for these more time intensive exercises will be assigned by averaging grades given by your instructor along with grades of at least 2 other jurors. Also included in this average will be a grade from a preliminary progress pin-up. Example: Preliminary 6 Juror I 7 Juror II 8 Instructor 7 Average 7 = B - Attendance Policy: Attendance is mandatory. If a student has more than 3 absences, for any reason, their final grade will be lowered one letter grade per additional absence. Drop Policy: See university drop policy. Last day to drop a course is November 3.
