1 Life Drawing Art 124B Instructor: Tim Forcum E- mail: Office hours: M/W 4:45-6:15pm AC606 (818) Spring 2018 M/W 2pm- 4:45pm Description A foundation course dealing with drawing the human figure. Emphasis on form, structure, proportions, gesture, and systems of perspective and space. Course Objectives - To examine and work towards the resolution of problems that are commonly associated with figure drawing. - To apply fundamental drawing content to interpretations of human form: the diversified character of line, simple light and shade theory, the rendering of volumes, the nature of surface, perspective, composition - To introduce various drawing media which are traditionally used in conjunction with the human figure. - To introduce reproductions of works by artists whose interpretation or treatment of the figure relates to course content. - To learn the vocabulary for 124B drawing. The goal in this class is to help you develop means by which you will be able to analyze and make sense of the human figure so you can draw it. We will use a systematic approach based on gestural expression and analysis of form. This will give you a foundation for further study. Drawing should not necessarily be an attempt to perfectly render the pose, effects of lighting, etc., but rather an interpretation of what the model may be trying to express, or perhaps something that is only suggested by what the model is doing. Ultimately, the drawing is a statement that the artist wishes to make. Department Program Goals Addressed in This Course Acquire a basic knowledge, theories, and concepts about art; build on foundation art skills and develop a high level of craft; communicate ideas and concepts through writing, speaking and art making; acquire a competency with a variety of tools and media. Broaden knowledge of historical contexts of art. Apply processes of generating and solving problems in art; analyze, interpret and question traditional methodologies and preconceived notions of art and art making. Develop an appreciation and tolerance of diverse perspectives dealing with art, culture, teaching and learning. Become involved in both individual and collaborative art experiences with other students and faculty. Develop ideas regarding career paths for an art profession or an art- related field. Experience and develop visual thinking and creative problem solving in art, as well as recognizing the importance of perception, experimentation, innovation and critical thinking. Student Learning Outcomes Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the elements of design Develop and demonstrate technical craft as it applies to whichever medium the student chooses to use Communicate ideas and concepts through artistic development and art making Build a historical context for art Apply processes of generating and solving problems in art within specific art assignments
2 Student Learning Outcomes (continued) Demonstrate an appreciation and tolerance of diverse perspectives Complete individual and collaborate art practices Consider an individual art or art- related career Use appropriate critical vocabulary to describe and analyze works of artistic expression Combine visual thinking and creative problem solving in the creation of finished works Rules - Always come prepared to work in class, Failure to do so will result in an absence. - You must clean up after yourself. - Put away your cell phones. - Absolutely No Photography is allowed. - Class time is for work on projects for this class only. - Please treat models with respect and appreciation. Attendance Attendance is mandatory. This is an activity class. Your presence and full participation are required to ensure your success and skill acquisition. If you are tardy to a class session or leave early, that will count as one- third of an absence. - Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class session. If you come in late, it is your job to inform the instructor that you are present - You must come to class prepared with your material; failure to do so will count as an absence. You are allowed 3 absences. After 3 your final grade well go down one letter grade for each additional absence. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Excessive lateness or leaving early will effect your final grade. (3 tardies or leave early = 1 absence) Grading Final grades are on a +/- system. All projects are graded on a 100% scale and averaged at the end of the semester. A =Outstanding, B=Very Good, C=Average, D=Below Average, F=Failure Grades are based on: Following the guidelines of the assignment and Effort. Final Grading will be Class Work (Mid- Term and Final Portfolios) 50% Sketchbook and Homework (Mid- Term and Final Sketchbook checks) 40% Quizzes 10% Suggested Texts Drawing From Life Third Edition by Clint Brown/Cheryl McLean ISBN Classic Human Anatomy by Valerie Winslow
3 Class Format In Class Work In most class sessions there will be a model from which to work. The experience of drawing from the model is critical if you want to learn to draw the figure. There is no substitute for this experience. On days when we do not have a model we will draw from ourselves or each other as well as be presented with various projects. All work must be clearly labeled in the lower right hand corner with: title of assignment, date and your name, printed. Please save all work. These drawings will be the source for you to compile a portfolio to be presented at midterm and at the end of term. There is no way for you to make up this experience, so please be here on time and ready to work. Portfolio Evaluation Students will present a portfolio for evaluation at two points during the term. This body of work will consist of drawings taken from work done in class as well as self- portrait and homework assignments. Midterm Portfolios will consist of self- portraits, homework drawings, and class drawings. Final Portfolios will consist of self- portraits, homework drawings, class drawings from the second half of the semester along with some from the Mid- term. Sketchbook You will maintain a sketchbook throughout the semester. This will be checked at midterm and at the end of the term for grading. You will have the following imagery and notes in this book. Notes on class lectures When you take notes in class you will put them in your sketchbook Readings and notes You will have weekly readings from the textbook. Notes from your readings will be kept in the sketchbook. At the end of term, this will be a summary of the readings and the text. Sketches from observation You will add sketches from observation gesture sketches, hand, foot or portrait drawings. Along with random everyday sketching, people in the park, eating lunch, walking to class, family members, friends, etc. The more drawings and experimentations in your sketchbook the better. These do not have to be perfect. Just draw. Learn to make it a habit. Quizzes We will have two quizzes in relation to class lectures and required reading. It is important to understand and be able to articulate basic vocabulary words, drawing terminology, and anatomical names. Quizzes will be announced.
