1 1 of 6 9/7/ :08 AM Syllabus: Drawing Continuing Education CE*1001C*01 Alexis Granwell, agranwell@uarts.edu Course Description The fundamental aspects of drawing are explored as students aim to develop sensitivity to the formal elements of line, value, shape, texture and space, worked individually and in concert. Draw from direct observation and invented images. Analyze and improve composition techniques and methods. References to historical and contemporary drawing practice from many traditions are a part of each class session. Course Objective This class is designed to explore the fundamental aspects of visual arts, establishing basic formal elements of drawing. Drawing is presented as a means of inquiry, discovery and invention. The class will begin with building perceptual skills through observational drawing. This is a step-by-step process that begins with exercises to build hand eye coordination. Students will progress with increasingly challenging lessons implementing a variety of methods. Students will also gain an understanding of various dry and wet drawing materials, such as charcoal, and ink. Representation, abstraction and perspective are explored in compositions using line, shape and value. In addition, supplemental art history slide and book presentations and guest lectures will aid students in their learning experience. Students are also encouraged to collect examples of drawings that interest them. Studio Policies Please turn off cell phones before you enter the classroom. No eating in the studio. No personal audio devices. Clean up before leaving class. You are responsible for your own work and materials. Attendance Punctuality and attendance is mandatory for each class. New concepts will be introduced weekly so attendance is very important. Learning takes place through lectures, demonstrations, one on one discussions and class critiques. Each class is designed to build on sequence to the previous one. Critiques Critiques are focused opportunities to share insights, verbalize intentions and to assist each other in one s development. It is also a time to practice visual vocabulary as well as articulate your ideas. The critique process is meant to help each person understand the strengths and weaknesses in his/ her work. Critiques in a studio class are as important as exams in a lecture course. Attendance is critical and required. Sketchbook The sketchbook can also be used to experiment, practice exercises from class, or research ideas for projects. The sketchbook is a visual journal, so try and record all of your ideas. Portfolio A Portfolio will be required in which you must keep all your work. Please have all of your drawings so that you can chart your own growth later in the semester. Slide Presentation on line and gesture: Pontormo, Rembrandt, Daumier, Matisse, Henry Moore, Kathe Kollwitz, Giacometti, Cy Twombley, Brice Marden, Ellsworth Kelley, Lascaux Caves Demonstration: mark making, gesture and blind contour drawing. 1 min drawing of chairs 30 sec blind contour compare and try again Skating across paper excercise 6 pieces of paper exercise HW: Alphabet as found in environment exercise. *Bring various charcoals, erasers, newsprint and bond paper for next week. Session 2 Date: LINE Film: William Kentridge mark making, line weight, qualities of line (different line with different media) Exercise: Drawing 25 sounds Demonstration: how to measure, use a viewfinder, thumbnail sketch, and compose a drawing. Using vine charcoal and charcoal pencil we will create different kinds of line drawings (gesture, cross-contour, structural). These drawings will be done by attaching charcoal to a dowel. 1) Exploring drawing as a hand-eye coordination process

No detail development of the form. 3) From the center as opposed to defining from the outer edge. 4) Look for relationships HW: Wrapping paper drawing *Bring Ink, Sumi Brush, Cups, Newsprint and Bond Paper for next week. Session 3 Date: SHAPE/ MASS Book presentation of Donald Sultan, Matisse, Ellsworth Kelly, Julie Mehretu, Kara Walker. negative and positive space, mass, volume Indian Ink/ Brush Drawings with plant still life Group Critique HW: Pos/ Neg ink drawing (same as in-class) Paint part of a landscape-has to be in a 10 x 10 space (approximately) Ex. Rooftop/ Sky, Fence/ Landscape etc *Bring glue sticks, scissors, x-acto knife, 16" x 20" Canson Grey Paper and 2 sheets of black and white contruction paper for next week. Session 4 Date: THE SHAPE OF VALUE value scale planar forms value and how it creates mass, volume, and space lost and found edges in drawing the expressive nature of value Book Lecture: Kathe Kollwitz, Rembrandt, Carravagio, Al Leslie We will create collages of a still life using grey, black and white paper. We will work on grey paper using the black and white paper to pull out the lights and darks. This is called a reductive technique. 1.) Emphasize the realization of volume as revealed by light. 2.) Show how light hits forms 3.) Focus on the directional nature of light HW: Create a value collage drawing using three different sized objects from your toolbox. The still life should consist of three objects and one direct spotlight. *Please bring pencil, ruler, bond paper and newsprint for next week. Session 5 Date: PERSPECTIVE/ TRANSPARENT CONSTRUCTION Discussion/ Demonstration: various techniques to convey spatial illusion Book presentation: Renaissance examples of one point perspective, Contemporary multiple point perspective. We will draw architectural spaces in the building. We will use pencil for these drawings. HW: Using pencil on bond paper, draw and measure to create a transparent construction drawing based on the interior of your closet.

Session 6 Date: PERSPECTIVE/ TRANSPARENT CONSTRUCTION Discussion/ Demonstration: various techniques to convey spatial illusion Book presentation: Renaissance examples of one point perspective, Contemporary multiple point perspective. We will draw architectural spaces in the building. We will use pencil for these drawings. HW: Using pencil, draw and measure all the dirty dishes in your sink. *Bring black conte, white conte, grey paper and newsprint to next class. Session 7 Date: VALUE value scale planar forms value and how it creates mass, volume, and space lost and found edges in drawing the expressive nature of value We will be making a full value drawing of a still life wrapped in fabric so as to see the planar elements. We will be using conte. This will be a two-session drawing. HW: Choose 2-3 objects that describe your personality. Create a drawing with one direct light source. Be clear and concise with where light is coming from. Be creative! Use full value with conte on grey canson paper. Session 8 Date: VALUE value scale planar forms value and how it creates mass, volume, and space lost and found edges in drawing the expressive nature of value We will be making a full value drawing of a still life wrapped in fabric so as to see the planar elements. We will be using conte. HW: Finish HW and in-class drawing. *Bring all drawing materials. Session 9 Date: THE FIGURE Introduction to Skeletal Structure/ Introduction to Bony Landmarks Discussion of bony landmarks in skeletal structure. Influence of bony structure on surface of flesh. Gesture, 15 min poses HW: master drawing *Bring black, white, sanguine conte and 2 sheets of grey canson paper.

Working from sustained pose, we will work with value using the reductive process on a grey canson paper. Focus on sighting, sensitive line and lost and found edges. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness of absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Nonattendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. To have ACT 48 Activity Hours for this course reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) you must complete and return the CE Request for Activity Hours Submission Form to the UArts Continuing Studies Office and meet all requirements outlined by the PDE. The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment, reschedule any course or to change the instructor. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund. The University is not responsible for supplies that may be purchased in advance.
